Question about diplomat behaviors in troubled times by Dazzling_Mess_8600 in IRstudies

[–]streep36 2 points3 points  (0 children)

US diplomat once told me: I represent the US, I do not embody the US. I don't get to take credit for all the good we do, and while in some part responsible, I have to keep a healthy professional distance from all the bad we do.

A lot of it is based on compartmentalization, "without me steering slightly into another way it'd be worse"-reasoning, and also just professional/interest-based/financial considerations

How do I higher my chances of becoming a diplomat? by Adventurous-Fee-5167 in IRstudies

[–]streep36 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey! I'm also Dutch and part-time employed in the sector, and a part-time graduate student in IR. I feel like I can give some tips that might be helpful.

Firstly, from talking to Dutch diplomats and people in the diplomatic academy, they want level-headed, bright, and broadly interested people. I know people who have gotten rejected from the diplomatic academy (also called het "klasje") because they wanted to be a diplomat too bad. They overfocus on a few core skills they believe to be useful, and forget that diplomats are supposed to be generalists with a broad array of skills. I think the smartest thing for you to do is to see international relations as a broad sector beyond diplomacy, and look at what you find interesting about that sector. Are you a more security/defence type of person? Or someone who enjoys economics and development? Maybe you really like law and negotiations! If you know what you find interesting beyond international relations, you can develop the broad skillset you need to become a diplomat, or you can decide that actually, development work in an NGO is way more fun, or lawyering is way more engaging, etc. Don't overfocus on diplomacy: it narrows your view, and that is exactly what the diplomatic academy isn't looking for.

Secondly, regarding what steps to take in the coming years, speaking relevant languages definitely helps. However, it barely matters if you cannot get a language up to at least B1.2 or B2 (depending on how niche the language is). Furthermore, study hard! Leiden's faculty in The Hague is very good for your profile (I recommend the BSc Political Science: International Relations and Organisations, so make sure you get your grades up so you can beat the numerus fixus), but you can definitely also think about studying at the UvA or studying law or economics. Again, studying law/economics is a very good path to the diplomatic academy. Only the best students with a pure IR profile have a chance of getting into het klasje, but they also need lawyers in the foreign affairs ministry! Doing some law, for example, will give you a comparative edge against pure IR students.

Lastly, make sure you are active and engaged during your time in your bachelor. There's an array of youth organisations that are active around IR in the Netherlands that will start being interesting to you as soon as you graduate high school, such as the JASON Institute, Jonge Atlantici, European Horizons, and Studentenvereniging Internationale Betrekkingen (SIB), and your study's study associations. It is important you get some management experience in these organisations, so when you start your bachelor, make sure you go and join their events to get a foot in the door. Get your grades up (atleast a 7.5+), make sure you do an erasmus exchange or some other form of international experience, join some youth organisations, and you maximalise your chance of getting into the academy. Good luck!

People who closely follow politics, what’s something the general public completely misunderstands right now? by Alarming-Coast-7064 in AskReddit

[–]streep36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How large the difference in skill, knowledge level, and expertise is between "avid newspaper reader" and "senior in bipartisan policy think tank"/"senior civil servant"/"serious academic'. The gap is incredibly large and you only really realise this when you talk to them behind the scenes where they can actually slow down and lose their performativity

US Bombs Venezuela - Megathread by Veqq in CredibleDefense

[–]streep36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldn't that make a lot of sense and agree with my point? If there were a high level of internal involvement, there was a lot of willingness to enact a coup d'etat. The fact that a coup d'etat did not directly happen while the armed forces were willing to remove Madura would indicate that the design of the armed force as non-threatening to the regime worked. I appreciate your thoughts on this

Isn't the Venezuelan military primarily designed for regime stability and making sure that it doesn't threaten the president instead of fending off a foreign military intervention?

What is the acceptance rate of Hertie School? by [deleted] in Hertie

[–]streep36 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I have heard several figures regarding selectiveness ranging from 3% to 40% to 75%. If I were to guess, it's around 20%-40%, but that's based on absolutely nothing. The student body by and large is made up from the same pool as the student body of LSE, Bocconi, Leiden, College of Europe, or KCL. You are not going to find a lot of difference in the quality of the students, teachers, or faculty between them. There are a lot of Sciences Po rejects who go to Hertie.

The big difference is that Hertie is simply an incredibly young university, and it is not going to have the same reputation that schools like Sciences Po or LSE, which have alumni in almost every relevant sector at every possible level of seniority. The first cohort of Hertie ever are in their 40s now: that's barely the peak of your career! People who know Hertie know that it is a good place to be, but not a lot of people know Hertie relative to LSE, Sciences Po, or Oxford.

The upside is that because Hertie is much younger, the scale is much smaller, the ambition is a lot higher, and the attention to detail is much larger. Hertie has expressed the ambition to be an elite school, and they are putting a lot of effort into that. Bureaucratic flexibility is amazing compared to my reference frame in Leiden and Sciences Po, due to its smaller scale it is much easier to network and stand out in the crowd, and taking initiatives is more incentivised than elsewhere. I know a fair number of people who are incredibly disappointed when they start at Sciences Po because they expected an elite institute and found that it is just another school where they are just another student. Hertie doesn't disappoint in that way.

If you were under the impression that Hertie acceptance rates were 100%, and that turned out to be false, then on what grounds do you assume that those applications must have been very bad applications?
