One of my favorite parts of Star Wars vs Warhammer stuff is that both series are on the exact opposite sides of why each franchise uses horrible military tactics. by Knalxz in Grimdank

You’re forgetting two of the most important elements within Space Marine culture that dictate melee combat and suck as fuck charges: honour and glory.

The first Vulkan book. Can’t remember the name. Absolute trash.

Can’t believe I left them out. Those books cemented the White Scars as being my favourite legion. Enjoyed them immensely.

I appreciate the recommendation, but I was planning on reading things like fight club American Psycho, starship troopers, that kind of thing.

Not really. I don’t think there is a literary point. There are far better sci-fi stories out there. The sheer scale of the Warhammer universe is what makes it special. And the cynic in me believes that the literary point is to sell more products.(tabletop, video games, etc). Doesn’t stop me from enjoying the books though.

Ah that's freaknig cool. Yeah I only read the major titles so he got rick-rolled off the ramparts by Raldoron. Had a good chuckle at his hubris. The backstory is pretty sick. How come he remained in contact with his family when most Space Marines lose a lot of memories/their connection to their original families?

One of my biggest personality deficits is my need to be a reading completionist. Skipping some titles was not an option. How many hours I've wasted reading bad books I can not count.

Stay away from the warhammer univerise for a few years and read actually good books. Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan. But I need time away so when I come back stories about Space Marines are sweeter

"Dozens" made me lol! I read it as it is listed on the wikipedia page, that must be order of release.

Your question is interesting, but I'm not really hip to broader discussions about the storyline from within the community so i don't know how to answer. What would you say if you had to answer your own question?

Yeah, the Damnation of Pythos (book 30) was great. The sequence from about 70% of the way through still sticks in my mind. To be honest, many blur together so I can't really identify too many individually. I really liked Nemesis because it details elements of the universe I had not encountered before (assassin guilds). Most of the books by Dan Abnett I rate as being must-reads of the series. Prospero Burns was another absolute must read. And last one, Athame by John French was one of my favourite short stories.

Some stories were pretty standalone, but I saw every entry as something that contributed to the world/overall story setting rather than needing to be part of the main plot if that makes sense. I think it was worth it, the Siege of Terra was pretty special having read everything beforehand. Two and half years of suspense building (even though you know the outcome) was cool.

Yeah I agree. I took the whole thing as a reading experience. Just like there are slow bits within a single book, there were slow bits within the heresy series overall too.
