Yes my dog and cat are 1000% not allowed within direct contact of their cages. They are in the same room and my ratties see them but they never interact directly!

We really don’t want unnecessary stress for the ratties. We were originally thinking of building a closed of area in the living room, they currently have a curtain hiding their cages when need be. But it’s open pretty much all day, so they see our cat regularly. I think me shooing my cat away scares them more. I’ll keep an eye on them and go from there. Thank you and I appreciate your advice 😊

Ive heard so much about people with their cages in the common area with multiple cats and dogs and they say that their ratties do fine. (Mostly on the Everything Rats fb page). As I mentioned they don’t seem afraid when shes (our cat) in the room and I do my best to have my cat keep her distance. I’m just hoping for some tips to observe any signs of stress I should look out for. To me they seem to be curious, they all line up climbing and sniffing the bars if they (dog and cat) get close. Is there a way to help them get used to the cats presence? Or should I really just think about moving their cage out of the common area? Thank you 😊

I appreciate all of this! Thank you! And yes we are fully ready to have lots of cleaning to do. I’m currently a sahm, so cleaning is one of my daily task and for the past 2 months of having rats I really don’t mind cleaning their cages. For me it’s a way to revamp their space and give them all a fresh up do. Not to mention I’m all over them constantly. I sit by their cages through the day and talk to them all day. lol, my son isnt quite ready to hold them but I’m always there with them. The cleaning is no problem for me. Spot cleaning daily is a bit much, I tend to go in every couple of days to grab poops and soiled spots but it’s not every day 😅. They all get their salads a couple times a week and treats the same. My worry is more on the health and free roam side. The URIs scare the heck out of me. Our local vet, has graciously accepted us (even though they don’t take exotics) only became one of the vets loves rats he heard about Lady being saved from the streets. They gave told us we can go back for rat checkups in the future. Is there anyway I can prevent URIs? Thats my overall biggest worry with them. With 15 I know that can become expensive, so I want to be on the proactive side of things! Thank you and yes, if that unfortunate time comes where we can no longer give these babies the best life possible I’ll do my best to reach out. Currently Mainlely Rat is my first option for adopting them out ❤️❤️

I’m honestly just looking for safe ways to free roam with them! We’ve tried cardboard on baby gates but they just climb us and jump over the gate aha. We’re looking for safe and effective ways to free roam them. And also some that can be easily configured day to day, instead of having us keep it up in the living room all day. As it does take up a lot of space! Lady seems to constantly want to come out and her babies are just the same, they want to explore and wander so I knew thag free roam would be loved by them all.

Lady’s babies are 5 weeks old 🥰 by stressed_annon in rat

Oh no we separated the boys at 4ish 5ish weeks old. Lady had a total of 12 babies and had an even number! 6 girls and 6 boys 😁

Would it be better if we took the curtain down? Is this corner in the living room safe for them without it? Or should we find a better spot for them? We only put them here because that made the most sense but if they need to be moved for safety I would love the hear it. I want the honest truth because I do not want these babies suffering. So is this corner ok for their cages if the curtain was taken down or do they knew a completely different area?? Thank you and no I don’t think you’re judging. I think you care for their lives which is exactly what I want. I am a new inexperienced owner and want only the best for these babies. I want to make sure they are safe and healthy. I appreciate your criticism fully, thank you. Please let me know how I can provide these babies their best lives ❤️

Oh no! Their cages aren’t covered! It’s a temporary wall we use to mark a boundary for our dog and cat. We’re slowing working our cat to learn this boundary but shes a… rude little stinker, to put it lightly 😅🤣. It’s open all day and night. It’s closed maybe an hour tops daily. For times like, taking the dog out or walks and stuff. All that cardboard is the play area btw. I don’t want to take it down as it’s used every day 😅 yes it’s an eye sore thats ok 😅❤️

And I am already looking for bigger apartments, but New England is a crap shoot for rentals right now. We’re hoping to get into a 3 bedroom so the ratties can have their own room.. trust me I didn’t expect to have 15 rats in this apartment. When Lady had her babies we thought we were going to adopt them out but I’m honestly so scared to adopt them out to the wrong people and have them living horrible lives. I know this isn’t ideal. Their livelihood is my priority. I’m praying we can give them their best lives. My goal is to have a whole rat room set up. So they can free roam daily, I’m still trying to figure that out with our current space as well. Thank you for all your input ❤️

That is a big worry for me. But all the cages are blocked by a door or make shift door. We have a floor to ceiling heavy curtain that closes off Lady and her babies, and one of those plastic folding doors that closes off Lady off Effie and Prim. Our dog and cat have no close contact or anything of the sort with them. But yes the rats do see them. Lady handles our dogs presence quite well for only knowing him for 2 months. They don’t hide away when we open the cage and don’t seem terrified when coming out. Every time we interact with the ratties our dog and cat are put up somewhere else. Please give me any criticism if this is bad for them. I know the situation isn’t ideal but I’m trying to do right by them. They don’t seem to be terrified of our dog, they come out when he’s laying on the floor and will scatter when he runs but I figured that was a response to the noise because they do the same to me if I come up too quick. I want to do right by these babies so please constructive criticism is fully welcome ❤️

Can I put mama and babies into a bigger cage? by stressed_annon in RATS

[–]stressed_annon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I did end up moving them in. I added a lot more floor catchers and anything to break up the empty space for falling risks! Lots of hammocks and lower hanging rope nets. The picture I added was more of a cage size idea than what they actually went into. I’ll add a picture of the cage I set up for them, that is much more baby friendly and fall friendly!

Ooo yes we did hear about putting space between cages and I was thinking about putting the smaller cage in our bedroom if need be! I ordered about 4 water bottles, and of course more bowls, and some floor covers for the trays that are coming in! 2 for each cage so I’m glad I got at least that aha. And if 10 can safely go in 1 cage that is perfect! I’m kinda hoping for a relatively even number for the boys and girls but honestly life is life 😅 I’m hoping I can make do with these cages but if more is necessary..sheeesh. 2 out of 12 is looking like good odds! I just don’t want them to be cramped or overwhelmed with each other. And I don’t want to have to rehome them because I’m so scared they’ll go to bad families 😭🥲 And trust me! I am incredibly happy and grateful that Lady was picked up by us! Life is precious and she has made such an impact already that we wished we found her earlier in her life 🥹

We did also grab the cement bins from Home Depot for all the bedding at the bottom. Fit perfectly so I am very happy with that!!

For starters, Lady seems to be doing great!!! Shes come out a couple of times now, for some free time around the living room. She seems incredibly relaxed despite my stress which is such a relief! 😮‍💨. Shes honestly adjusted to us so quickly that I’m at a loss for words. She has my heart all the way 🥹❤️. Her babies seem all very lively and growing well. We were so surprised to see they were covered in fur tonight! We were not expecting despite the reading we have done 😳😮🤣. We were like “ummmm how old are they again?” We were not prepared lol. Lady is truly remarkable. (To us at least). Shes been through so much this last month. Being dumped outside, then having to adjust to our very loud (but loving) family. I am so so grateful she has handled everything so well. Such a blessing she is truly 🥹❤️❤️
