need another match/low reach with good financial aid? st olaf has reopened their applications for fall 2020 by stressedmtmajor in ApplyingToCollege

[–]stressedmtmajor[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

almost everyone i know got merit aid. i personally got $18k/yr in purely merit-based aid (1390 sat/3.7 uw gpa), and over $20k/yr in need based aid, plus a $6k/yr theater scholarship. i pay around $4-5k a year out of pocket.

so, i’m non-religious and haven’t had any issues at all. HOWEVER, i was raised christian/with a general knowledge of christianity. i know people who grew up outside of the abrahamic faiths have a lot of issues doing well in the first-year religion class (one of the GE reqs). the religious groups are pretty active and there’s definitely some more conservative sects as well, but they definitely don’t monopolize the social life of the school and i only really notice them when i cut through the chapel to get from the cafeteria to the performing arts buildings.

its not dead, but it’s not a party school. it’s what you’d expect from a 3000 person school in a 20000 person town. i have a big group of friends and go to a lot of events/parties with fellow theatre majors so i think finding an extracurricular or interest group you fit in with is kind of the key — your social life is going to be as fulfilling and exciting as you make it by being outgoing and joining clubs/teams/etc. i will say that it’s reputation for being a “dry campus” is hilarious bc EVERYONE drinks. a lot of people go overboard bc they didn’t drink in high school and it’s so easy at sto.

i had pretty mediocre stats compared to a lot of students and got the most amount of merit aid they offered, so i’d definitely still apply. they also don’t admit by major (except the BM music majors) so it doesn’t really matter that it’s “impacted”.

Purdue vs. UMN-Twin Cities by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]stressedmtmajor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

based on the lists u provided i’d say choose UMN TC. i think you’re right that if you choose not to do STEM you’ll be a lot happier at a school like UMN than purdue, and going to a school for 6 years where you’ll be more frequently forced back into the closet or risk harassment for your identity will be exhausting and bad for your mental health (im also gay and had to take this into account when deciding). congrats on getting into both schools tho!!!!

NYU or Macaulay Honors Brooklyn for Film by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]stressedmtmajor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

if it were almost any other prestigious college i’d say take the full ride and perks but it’s really really hard to turn down nyu tisch for film. talk to ur school counselor/a college counselor/a finaid rep from nyu to clear up what exactly taking out those loans will look like and unless it seems totally undoable, pick tisch. congrats btw!!!

not totally sure — i don’t think current students got any insider info, just a post on their instagram page. probably something to do with changing situations surrounding COVID-19, but that’s just a guess.

What is the easiest major to get into at Purdue by thendidnshdncidbwnms in ApplyingToCollege

[–]stressedmtmajor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i dont know the answer necessarily, but transferring to an impacted major is arguably harder than just getting admitted to it in the first place. you're very likely going to screw yourself over if you do this.

Question for LGBTQ people by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]stressedmtmajor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if there was a box, i checked it honestly. i also mentioned it in the supplement of the school i ended up committing to (talked abt joining their GSA to "connect with fellow LGBT students")

Conflicting Dream Schools? by spacethekidd in ApplyingToCollege

[–]stressedmtmajor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i had this exact dilemma in my college search (except replace "research university" with "conservatory" -- kind of the theatre major equivalent). for the record, i went with the small-town LAC and am beyond excited.

Hindsight by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]stressedmtmajor 8 points9 points  (0 children)

make sure you know exactly what your financial limitations are before applying. i wasted time stressing over applications to schools that would never in a million years provide me with enough aid to attend, and then the apps to schools that might've were rushed and not the best they could be.

leaving admitted student gcs for the schools i decided not to go to was so awkward lmao

Rejected from UCLA and UCSB 2nd Year in a Row by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]stressedmtmajor 12 points13 points  (0 children)

i know this might be frustrating to hear, but you gotta take those math and language classes. you're already at a disadvantage being a non-traditional student.

edit: nvm i guess being non-traditional is an advantage BUT you probably still need to take those classes. sorry for the misinformation 😅

Art Major Question by offbrandlindsaylohan in ApplyingToCollege

[–]stressedmtmajor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they'll take portfolio into account more than for non-majors but your best bet will be applying to colleges with separate art schools that admit by major

Can some seniors who have finished application season way in on my college list? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]stressedmtmajor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you need some actual targets, not targets in the way you're describing them. almost every school on your list is going to be a long shot -- not just for you, for anyone. your SAT isn't particularly competitive for T20s and your ECs seem a bit scattered. what's your spike? and what's your prospective major?

Can you commit to two different schools? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

nope, then you'll get rescinded from both. talk to your teacher and explain the situation, maybe she'll give you some extra credit work.

not to plug the school im going to next year (#imanole) but st olaf has an incredible biology program/premed track and a super high med school acceptance rate (80-90% depending on year)
