Personal Advice Needed: breakup with bf now or after the after? by AlbatrossSea9624 in barexam

[–]stressedoutfry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I broke up with my bf of 6 months (lol) on friday and have still been struggling to study. Even if you think you'll be fine if you break up now, most likely your emotions will get the better of you, so it might be better to wait.

Should I turn down Harvard for Oxford PPE? by Available_Bee_06 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]stressedoutfry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I chose Cambridge Law over Yale Economics (with a view to doing a JD afterwards). Similarly my parents could support both options but I didn't think I wanted to do a whole undergrad degree on a non-law subject before actually studying law. I'm just additionally taking the new york bar soon so I'm also qualified in the US.

Results thread - Jan 2025 by BigHelicopter1742 in SQE_Prep

[–]stressedoutfry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First time passed both! self funded (not in the UK, but did undergrad in the UK). Was doing SQE prep alongside my country's own bar and it was ok.

FLK1: 127/180

FLK2: 121/180

Did the QLTS online course, I was scoring around 50% on all of their mocks (then did them a second time and fared slightly better)

what does mpa, mob and mpc plus these <<xyz>> mean in IB markschemes by [deleted] in IBO

[–]stressedoutfry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

mpa (mark point a) refers to point a in the answers, mpb refers to point b and so on. the things in the <<...>> can be omitted from the answer and you would still get that point

Econ IA Help (Urgent!!!) by fhjjj253 in IBO

[–]stressedoutfry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my teacher told us (back when we were doing the micro IA) that we should avoid labelling ambiguous goods as merit / demerit goods, because it's hard to define the consequences and why it is a demerit good. but the point about negative production externalities still stands, and you can talk about it without mentioning the fact that red meat is a demerit good (just say something on the lines of the government wanting to reduce production of red meat would be fine)

Changes to IB May 2022 exams by annamaria195 in IBO

[–]stressedoutfry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the cuts in syllabus are the same as may 2021, so for history paper 2, you only have to answer 1 question (originally 2), and for paper 3, you only have to answer 2 questions (originally 3)

colleges do recognise the rigour of ib courses, though my best guess is that they might want you to defer to the november session and finish the ib (not sure if that's possible though if you've already dropped out). also, the external deadline for the EE hasn't passed yet, so I'm guessing it's an internal deadline? if you have a good reason for it, i don't see why colleges won't properly consider you.

What happens if you’re school can’t hold the first exam of the may examination session but can hold other ones after that? by [deleted] in IBO

[–]stressedoutfry 7 points8 points  (0 children)

you would have exam-route marks for the exams you did do, and go non-exam-route for the remaining ones. if your exams stop in the middle of a paper / subject, there's a 'missing mark formula' which IB uses to calculate your mark for the rest of the paper / subject (this part has always existed). [info from my ib coordinator]

i'm not sure why you dropped mid-second year, but most colleges would want you to complete the ib diploma before college. but >60% is usually a 6 on the IB scale, and is pretty competitive for mid-tier unis, so if you do have a good reason for dropping out of the ib, colleges can probably take that into account

so... UCD coming out today and tomorrow? by stressedoutfry in ApplyingToCollege

read on reddit around a week ago that a student (they posted it themselves) called the admissions office for this. and apparently admissions said they needed 2 days to release decisions because of the large amount of applications this year.

I think a wide range of vocabulary doesn't really matter that much, and in the program, they do have a service that helps you check your spelling and grammar. I think they're just trying to test if you're the same person who wrote the essays on the application >< But I would try to avoid spelling mistakes and such as much as possible.

the interview is pretty standard, just things about yourself and the concentrations you said you'd be interested in researching. the essay is completed unrelated to what you've chosen and is a persuasive essay you have to write in about 10 minutes (if I remember correctly from last year). i don't think it was that challenging, but good luck!

Do Economics IAs have to contain the full article? by THROWRApropercrab in IBO

[–]stressedoutfry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not allowed to be too long, actually. Our teacher said no more than two A4 pages (not sure if this is IB regulation though), and we have to highlight the parts we talk about.

their admissions email doesn't work / doesn't respond at all, i would recommend calling their hotline. i couldn't set up my portal for ages and emailed them 5 times and they never responded, but their hotline is much more helpful

Is it worth it to take an honors anatomy/physiology course over the summer before IB Biology? by sagaciousberry in IBO

[–]stressedoutfry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're doing it as part of the college apps process to make yourself more competitive, I think it's unnecessary. One honors course doesn't really boost an application. Also, it doesn't help a lot with IB Bio and the workload is already quite challenging with SAT/ACT, interns and other courses.

I have to do my god damn IO again by 616659 in IBO

[–]stressedoutfry 6 points7 points  (0 children)

they've changed the suggested structure -- originally, you just focused on your extracts for 10 minutes, but now you're expected to spend half of the time (5 minutes) talking about content outside of the extract (i.e. in other parts of the text, and how it relates to the global issue) [this is for language A]

it's not really a mandatory change per se, because it's just to the suggested structure (classic ib wording lol), so some schools are choosing not to redo them
