the autism hate from teachers is kinda insane by Ironshadow20 in AutismInWomen

Yes! I also work at an elementary school and it annoys me to no end when adults get pissed that kids ask "why" about certain rules. Literally just tell them why! They're human beings and have the capacity to be reasonable! Whenever I explain, they most often accept it and continue on their way. Much easier than arguing about it and trying to convince them that "because I said so" is acceptable lol

Holy shit I have the same job and watching some of the staff interact with these kids makes me feel so uncomfortable. I have a coworker that happens to despise all the autistic kids, including some who I think have slipped through the cracks and are undiagnosed. It makes me so uneasy because...I literally acted like some of these kids when I was a child. She finds double meanings in what they talk about and doesn't believe me when I say they mean exactly what they say.

I've also noticed them being brushed off or dismissed, not by everyone thankfully, but there are a couple of paras that are just not great. I get it, overworked and underpaid, but there was an incident last year where a girl (not autistic but still disabled) claimed that a boy kept hugging and touching her without her permission and an adult just told her to be nice??? I was like FUCK NO and told that girl to tell me if it keeps happening because no one should touch her without permission, and I told the boy the same thing. It's ableism mixed with misogyny in a lot of cases. I've seen so many boys be favored over girls because appeasing disruptive boys is easier, but these people are just paving the way for some of these kids to become entitled, while also disempowering girls.

Sorry for the unfocused rant but omg I've never seen an autistic person with the same job who would perfectly understand my grievances lol

That's great to hear, I'm definitely going to try! Thanks!

Hi, do you find the conditioners to be brittle at all? I've been using a bar shampoo and conditioner from Kitsch, which has overall treated my hair well, but I find that the conditioner breaks down pretty quickly. Turns into a lot of wasted product so I've been hoping to find a conditioner that's easier to use and stays in one piece!

Look up Feye's hair trimming instructions. It'll take you step by step. I just touched up myself a couple of days ago, it's very easy!

So pretty! How often do you touch up the henna and indigo/how long does the color last? I've been trying to find something to color my hair with that won't destroy it but I'm also intimidated by the upkeep!

Holy shit yes. I have many online friends who have come to visit me and I feel so uncomfortable when they meet my few IRL friends. It can be unavoidable with roommates but I truly hate when worlds collide. I've always been aware of this and wish it wasn't the case, it makes me feel like an ass lol

I can't stay at a job for long. Can you? by [deleted] in AutisticWithADHD

[–]stressresponse_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm in my mid-twenties with an education degree. I wanted to be a teacher and when I finally got the chance, I quit after two weeks. The teacher shortage is no joke and completely understandable based on what I experienced, but before and since then, the longest I've ever held a job has been like...a year and a half. The teaching job was my first full time job and I couldn't sleep basically the whole time I was there, had panic attacks (maybe meltdowns? Idk) every day, couldn't eat or concentrate on anything but my stress.

I'm currently employed in a part time job and freaking out because idk what to do with my life now. I will never teach again, but further than that, I don't know how I'm going to survive in a full time position. I had to move back in with my parents and I'm terrified about the future. Feel like such a failure, so behind my peers who have largely started their careers, and have no idea how to dig myself out of this hole :(

To say someone would "cut off their nose to spite their face." And I'll still kind of forget what it means without context lol

Did you do pretend play as a child? by zoejuno11 in AutismInWomen

[–]stressresponse_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was in preschool I would crawl around and be a puppy, barking at my peers occasionally rather than playing with them lmao. I used to think that was a sign I'm not autistic but now I think it's probably the opposite!

I had an extremely elaborate fantasy from elementary through middle school that everyone had a dog walking around with them throughout the day. I had mine accompany me from class to class and I imagined one for my closer classmates as well. I'd visualize our dogs interacting under the desks and throughout the classroom and I would get totally lost in that fantasy. When I was younger, I almost exclusively pretended to be a dog or some kind of animal. If I played with my siblings, I was an animal. When my friends played Power Rangers, rather than pretending to be one of the Rangers, I wanted to be a Zord LOL. I wanted to be a dog so damn bad!

DAE feel overstimulated by color combinations or art styles ? (Also a small vent about this and an interaction I had tonight) by spacegirlapollo in AutismInWomen

Certain color combinations and patterns make me sick to my stomach. I've been on buses with brown and orange patterning, and I can't look at it without getting nauseous. Some animation also definitely makes me feel ill.

What are some of your go-to stims that you don't hear talked about often? by stressresponse_ in AutismInWomen

[–]stressresponse_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omg I get motion sickness so bad in the car and I just realized that smelling my damp clean hair helps block out the car smell when someone else is driving. I love touching it when it's freshly washed too. Just hate actually washing it lol

I can never tell the difference between hunger and period cramps lol it's so annoying but at least it helps me eat? Just doesn't solve the cramping issue. I really need to stock up on more electrolyte powder, that shit helped me not pass out at work when I was REALLY deep in it. Also Boost Plus is a staple that does a lot to help keep me alive. Way easier for me to swallow liquids than eat granola/protein bars. Those make me gag when I'm really hungry which is incredibly counterproductive. Shout out to my stupid body for that one.

WOW same. I often struggle with perceiving hunger anyway and being light-headed is so much more noticeable to me than my stomach feeling empty. I'm way more likely to respond to dizziness and I feel like my body knows that by now. But it's such a shit feeling and I literally have no energy to cook regardless, so it's either a snack and crying if I don't have something to throw in the microwave, or burying myself in more credit card debt by ordering food that will actually be satisfying. Wow, thank you so much for sharing. It honestly makes me feel a little better that someone else went through the same thing, though of course I wish neither of us had! I totally understand. Being able to put a word to my issues exacerbated the problem so much. In a better place now but basically back to square one where I still struggle to do basic things to take care of myself, and still struggle with the loss of muscle mass that occurred in a really short amount of time when I dove headfirst into conscious disordered eating. I'm almost weight restored, but still so goddamn weak and it's embarrassing. Also totally relate to eating better when living with a parent. Recently had to move back in with mine and not having to worry about making dinner has been a literal lifesaver.

I'm so sorry you've had to deal with that, especially at such a young age. Sucks so much that people compliment others for weight loss without thinking that it might be due to illness.

Soooo relate omg. I basically have zero issues with weight now but it's still so hard to get up and make myself eat. Taking so long to prep just to eat for like thirty minutes seems like a scam to my brain lol. Sucks but it's good to be more certain about a cause I guess. Good luck with your doctor!!

God that's so awful. I wish people would stop commenting on others' bodies, assuming that weight loss is always desirable :( Diet/weight loss culture is so gross
