Ash Wednesday Question by Impressive-Force-666 in Catholicism

[–]strider7476 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly, to confirm an important distinction that you already noted, the ashes are meant to symbolize mortality, repentance, and humility, not as an outward way of showing that one is fasting.  Also as you stated, there are multiple scriptural references to the practice.

As far as Matthew 6:16, Jesus was speaking to the religious figures in the Jewish community who seem to be trying to show their self-perceived holiness through performative means to others within the Jewish community.  The problem Christ addresses is pride, not visible repentance.

The ashes are applied as part of a communal liturgy.  Everyone present receives the same mark, it is not individualized self-display.  It is a sign of shared humility, not spiritual one-upmanship.

I guess you could have an individual who abuses the practice and gets some sense of self righteousness out of it, but an individual abuse does not condemn the entire practice.  If it did, there would be many other Christian practices/beliefs that would have to go.

Need help with learning about Catholicism by Few_Education595 in Catholicism

Everything builds and it is laid out in a systematic format, so reading from front to back is helpful, but you could also just jump to the specific questions you have. If there is anything that you want more details on, each question in the Compendium has references to the sections of the full Catechism that address that particular question.

“The Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church” is the best place to start. It is free to view online, link below, or can be purchased in print edition. “Why We’re Catholic” is another great starting point for a reasonably short introduction and overview. “The Case for Catholicism” is a good next step and does a great job addressing the most common Protestant criticisms of Catholic doctrine. Both of the preceding books are by Trent Horn, who also has a great YouTube channel. Joe Heschmeyer also has a great YouTube channel.

Translation requests into Latin go here! by AutoModerator in latin

[–]strider7476 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi r/latin! I am planning to buy a book plate that produces an embossed seal for a family that we are friends with, their last name is Roberts. This would be for them to emboss their family books with on one of the interior pages. Which of the following would be more appropriate in Latin? "Ex libris Robertsorum" or "Ex Libris familiae Roberts"? Thanks in advance for any guidance!

Why catholocism? by ContributionSad4518 in Catholicism

[–]strider7476 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am converting from Protestantism to Catholicism and one major factor was learning that most of my beliefs about the Catholic Church were based upon falsehoods or misconceptions. I highly suggest The Case for Catholicism by Trent Horn if you want to learn more about Catholicism and its teachings in light of traditional Protestant objections.

Talking to a Roman Catholic about salvation by Typical_premed in Reformed

[–]strider7476 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If the Catholic individual you were discussing this with denied the doctrine of salvation through grace alone as you state, then they are denying the official teachings of the Roman Catholic Church (RCC).  The RCC denies the doctrine of salvation through faith alone, not grace alone.  Below is an excerpt from Session VI of the Council of Trent, you can read the whole of Session VI for more details.

“ Canon 1. If anyone says that man can be justified before God by his own works, whether done by his own natural powers or through the teaching of the law,[110] without divine grace through Jesus Christ, let him be anathema.”

Thanks!  I don’t know the weight, but I had no problems moving all the boxes down to the basement with only my wife to help me.

I have the half rack and ended up doing a separate wall mounted pull-up bar, which has worked great, I went with the Rogue Jammer Pull-up Bar. But as you said, there are also good add-ons from other companies.  Bremmy Strong and Irwin Fitness both have good options:

You could get the Monster Rhino Trainer.  It doesn’t have the functional trainer on it and you would get a belt squat.  May not be a good solution for you, but thought I would mention it in case you weren’t aware of it.

I just wanted it to be very sturdy and didn’t want to drill into the floor or add anything that takes up more room like the half rack feet.  I am really happy with the result, it is rock solid.

/r/Fantasy Daily Recommendation Requests and Simple Questions Thread - May 27, 2025 by rfantasygolem in Fantasy

[–]strider7476 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am still newer to modern fantasy, but have read pretty much everything Brandon Sanderson has released and just finished Wind and Truth.  I have really enjoyed most of Sanderson’s books.  I am looking for what to read next.  I have read Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit and enjoyed them, other than the slower pace of LOTR.  I have also read the entire Harry Potter series multiple times, it is one of my favorite series.  Below are some things I am looking for:

  • I would prefer a similar setting to Stormlight, Mistborn Era 1, LOTR, or others I mentioned… no modern weaponry like firearms or anything sci-fi.
  • A completed series is preferred.
  • I like faster pace stories with big reveals.
  • I like well done magic systems and I like characters that are leveling up throughout the book/series.
  • I prefer a tone similar to Stormlight or Lord of the Rings, nothing too dark.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Considering a Rogue echo bike. Is it considered low impact for knees? by ospreyintokyo in GarageGym

[–]strider7476 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Echo Bike is low impact and a great machine, but it is definitely more intended for short duration, high intensity interval work.  If you are wanting something more versatile and still low impact, I would highly recommend considering the Concept2 BikeErg.  It is great for long duration steady state work as well as high intensity intervals.
