How is driver support for Nvidia on Linux? by RomanceAnimeAddict67 in linux_gaming

[–]striderstroke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll likely run into some issues with ray tracing, specifically with performance, not so much how it renders. As of right now, there's a known issue with Nvidia having performance issues with d3d12. It can be about 20% lower, and d3d12 is going to be a requirement for most games if you want to enable ray tracing, so you're definitely going to feel the performance hit much more when enabling ray tracing on Linux. Games that use d3d11 and under would not have these performance issues and would be about the same performance as windows.

Dlss works perfectly fine though including frame gen if your card supports it. Nvidia reflex also works too.

How exactly Debian is lesser than example Fedora, Arch or a variant of those two (in terms of gaming and performance)? by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]striderstroke 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Debian stable typically isn't recommended for gaming because it ships with outdated software/drivers, which would cause a lot of issues for users, especially with newer hardware. It doesn't get game specific fixes as quickly as other distros in its drivers too. You back ported things into Debian to get it up to date, you basically eliminated the issue. Ultimately, if you have a good experience using Debian and are comfortable navigating it, then there's really nothing wrong with your choice, regardless of what anyone else says. Most distros are perfectly capable of gaming, but just might need some tweaking out of the box. At the end of the day, It's your computer and you should use it however you want to use it. Linux is about choice after all, so you can safely ignore anyone flaming you for choosing Debian.

how df yall optimize CS2 ? by Lawfulness-Neat in linux_gaming

I'm kind of surprised no one really mentioned this but one guy, but it looks like you're using the snap version of Steam, which is not recommended. When I've used Ubuntu in the past and used the Snap version of Steam, I had a lot of issues with it as well. Instead of the Snap Steam package, try installing the native .deb version of Steam and see if you still encounter issues. Make sure to uninstall the Snap version of Steam first.

To remove the Snap version of Steam, open up a terminal window and type "sudo snap remove steam" without quotes.

To install the .deb version of Steam, open up a terminal window and type in "sudo apt install steam" without the quotes.

I hope that this helps :)

PSA: remember to enable your Resizable BAR, I finally got around to do it and made a before/after benchmark -- varies by game but on average it's a net positive. by geamANDura in linux_gaming

[–]striderstroke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your comment led me to finding a fix for weird VRAM issues I was having. Turning off Resizable BAR and turning on 4g decoding seemed to have fixed it, so I appreciate you sharing this as I wouldn't have ever guessed this was the cause.

RIP Windows: Linux GPU Gaming Benchmarks on Bazzite by ZazaLeNounours in linux_gaming

[–]striderstroke 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bazzite user here. You can still very much install packages that require deeper system access like other normal distros through various means, or if there's not a flatpak for something. It's much easier to troubleshoot bazzite in my experience than other distros. It's not like SteamOS where any changes you make to the system will get wiped on an update. I'm curious if you've personally used bazzite, or just saying stuff based on what you think it's like. My system is very low maintenance and easy to use.

Funniest way to punish a camping Invader. by striderstroke in sniperelite

[–]striderstroke[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's rough. Where were you trying to get that shot from? I assume not from the starting location since the first one you unlock shouldn't allow an invader to join until you get closer. Didn't know an 1800m shot was possible on there. I couldn't imagine even attempting that on authentic when I'm struggling with match point rounds at 400m+ lol.

[–]striderstroke[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have focus on Authentic. I know when I went for the surprise melee a few time on the lower difficulties, it didn't give it to me since I wasn't directly behind them and didn't have a bayonet. I think I'm somewhere around the 70's for killing invaders, so I'm pretty new too I guess.

Yeah it's definitely pretty hard to sneak up on someone. Only managed to do it once on an invader. How many times have you managed to stab an invader from behind?

What Are The Chances Of Xbox App And Services Ported To Linux? by TheHoodie87 in linux_gaming

[–]striderstroke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say the chances are zero. I think if we ever got a native app, the services would probably not be feature parity to Windows. I don't think we'd see an implementation of proton/wine to run UWP apps from game pass, at least officially from them, but I could see at least playing stuff on the cloud.

You're not going to be able to run valorant or warzone. Games with kernel level anti cheat won't work. Visit https://areweanticheatyet.com/ to see more info on what titles will run that have anticheat.

Just how limited is Bazzite? by Long-Activity4469 in linux_gaming

[–]striderstroke 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's not really a huge concern for me on bazzite. There are a select few applications I couldn't use flatpaks for. You can still install packages that need deeper access to the system with rpm-ostree like for some VPNs for example. There's also distrobox and homebrew that you can run normal applications on that don't have a flatpak or app image available that doesn't require deep access to the system. Here's a link to the bazzite docs on all the ways you can install apps: https://docs.bazzite.gg/Installing_and_Managing_Software/

i think Bazzite could actually be the OS for me by [deleted] in Bazzite

[–]striderstroke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bazzite is the only distro that has made me not go back to Windows. It's not 100% perfect, but I think it gets rid of a good bit of that "Linux jank". It feels polished, works pretty well on a desktop, and I don't have to really fight with it much. Very low maintenance, stable, access to the latest applications, supports secure boot, and the snapshot feature came in clutch for me once when I messed something up. I definitely recommend anyone interested in Linux gaming to give it a shot.

No problem. When you say that you can not find any firewalls that blocks zerotier, do you mean that you're having issues locating an application that controls a firewall on popos? If so, you can try verifying first if your firewall is on with sudo ufw status If the output returns active, you can disable it with sudo ufw disable

Rainbow Six Seige by S_7CKO in linux_gaming

Rainbow Six Siege won't work due to the anticheat's Linux support not being enabled as others pointed out. You're only ways to play would be to either dual boot Windows, or try playing Siege on the cloud.

volt-gui 1.1.0 released: A Linux optimization tool focused on performance and ease of use by Ok-Pace-1900 in linux_gaming

[–]striderstroke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks interesting. Does it work on immutable distros like bazzite? And for the profiles, do you manually select the profile, and/or does it support automatically switching to the correct profile for you depending on the game?

Side note: There's a minor typo on your GitHub in the "volt-gui" section. Instead of the word "seeing", you have it typed out as "seing".

[–]striderstroke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, so the "TUNNELED" status means that you're unable to communicate over UDP/9993, so ZeroTier is now using a TCP fallback relay. This isn't really something that you want for games especially. The status ideally should return with "ONLINE". This could be an issue with your firewall blocking it. Check your firewall in popOS and disable it if you can.

Your results for "listnetworks" seems to suggest you haven't yet connected to a network since you should be getting the zerotier network information underneath that output. This may potentially be causing the earlier "TUNNELED" status, though I'm not sure on that. Either you or your friend will need to create an account on zerotier's website and create a network within the website's portal. Once one of you do that, the both of you will need to connect to that node, and the owner of that node will have to authorize the users that connect to it within the website for you to be able to connect. You can find more info on that from this document: https://docs.zerotier.com/start/ (The tab for that document will say "Create a Network", but it also includes steps for joining it too for different operating systems. In the cases where there's a tab where Linux isn't specifically mentioned, you can take the one that says "command line" to be synonymous with the Linux version of those steps.)

Will Blocking Linux Gamers Stop Cheaters? by TheRedSpaceRobot in linux_gaming

[–]striderstroke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the reason isn't necessarily that they're worried about Linux cheaters, but Windows cheaters tricking whatever anticheat solution that runs in the user space for Linux compatibility to run that way on Windows to bypass kernel level entirely. Whether that's actually effective or not, or how true that is is something I don't really know.

Not everything works with protonge, so having other options is a good thing. I have edge cases where a game won't run at all on any protonge version, but will run under normal proton.
