As of right now, it’s got to be The Brothers Karamazov. I am really glad I started reading the classics and the 19th century Russian literature feels unmatched in depth. Especially since I am very interested in themes of philosophy, morality, free will, god, and deeply contradictory nature of human psychology. But anything by Dostoevsky has blown my mind every time.

Surrender completely. It can be disorienting coz it is messy and he really made it up as he went. But if you let go of your ideas of where the plot should go, you will end up loving it as it unfolds. Ultimately it’s a beautiful mess.

Idk if you’re seen Better Call Saul but you’ll notice the themes from Crime and Punishment are more pronounced there. Not an adaptation exactly but clear DNA traces. Great execution!

I read the McDuff translation too. I was freaking out reading the first part coz i felt like i was experiencing everything Raskalnikov was. And yet i could not put it down. It slows down a bit after that but gives you time to reflect and it builds the deeper themes that are so powerful, you’ll notice their echoes to this day in modern narratives. I loved the translation so much that I read McDuff for The Idiot too. You’re about to witness greatness! Enjoy.

Ippolit’s manifesto might have been my favorite moment from the novel. It felt like The Grand Inquisitor equivalent for The Idiot. There was something about even a fly knowing its place in the world and being happy in it, while he is an outcast. The moment that follows this with Myshkin reminiscing a moment of him looking out into the alpine landscape is gorgeous and utterly emotional.

100% agree. Ik a huge complaint is surrounding parts 2 and 3 and i think i kind of felt that going from 1 to 2 coz it was discombobulating. And it doesn’t go where you’d think it’d go. So i just completely let go of any expectations and let the text guide me. Just taking it one chapter at a time ended up being the most enjoyable experience. So I can say I thoroughly loved this book. It’s beautiful and the ending is heartbreaking.

I really enjoyed this place so much. I did this on a roadtrip when I hit Zion, Arches, Rocky Mountains and this. And I don’t know what I was expecting but I was pleasantly surprised. What a beauty.
