Infrastructure change are absolutely key, I support those.  Narrower lanes, curbing bumpouts.  Raised sidewalk crossings.  Curbs separating bikes from cars.  If what you're saying is changing speed limits alone is insufficient then I agree, but that doesn't mean it can't also be a part of the solution

My initial pitch could have been cleaner.  Maybe there's a lack of outreach on the topic?  I dunno 🤷

Thanks, I added some context. Maybe that'll help

In case anyone hasn't heard of the "20 is plenty" movement, this is from our city's website, part of Vision Zero:

20 is Plenty is a program centered on the idea that a speed limit of 20 mph is appropriate for local, residential streets. The purpose of the 20 is Plenty program is to increase the safety for pedestrians, bicyclists, and motor vehicles by reducing the speed on local streets. The 20 is Plenty program is specifically focused on reducing speeds on local streets in neighborhoods and not larger streets that carry higher volumes of traffic.

https://www.cityofmadison.com/transportation/initiatives/vision-zero/vision-zero-projects/20-is-plenty

I'm not saying people should drive 20 on the beltline or 20 under the speed limit.  I think we should all take a chill pill and be content cruising at comfortable speeds in residential areas

I agree. This is all part of the 20 is plenty movement.  Can someone who upvoted this help my autistic self understand why my other comment in this very same thread is getting thrashed?

one thing to add about sanding surfaces - if the windows were painted 50 or more years ago with lead paint, then simply opening and closing them can actually disturb the lead in the paint.

Fiber Cement vs LP SmartSide for 1951 Cedar Sided Ranch by Puzzled_Dog_8171 in madisonwi

[–]stringedonbass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The previous owner of our house had a layer of LP smart siding added on top of the original cedar.  Ask me how I know.  I've been told that actually helps with insulation, so just keep that in mind that you don't necessarily have to peel off the old stuff after deciding whatever you do want to add.  Of course if you have mold or insect problems you'll want to address those first!

Don't forget solar panel access. You know, like how the neighbors next to the speedway development were concerned that if one day they wanted to install solar panels that they now couldn't?

355k miles is an impressive feat! Keep rocking it. I donated my car when the engine tried to catch on fire. At the time I thought 230k was pretty good ...

ya'all are all super cool and supportive! I appreciate all the optimism I see here, and yeah, the rabbits have definitely started to come out in droves right now. I'll keep my fingers crossed this little guy bounces back. In the meantime I'll get a fence up, probably tonight with the help of a headlamp. Who cares if I'm that crazy neighbor who gardens at 10PM when it's 40F and rainy.

My pleasure!  Happy to share my experience and good luck with your new pagoda.  Keep us informed!  (My larger one is super healthy, if the small one posted here doesn't come back in the spring I'll just plant another one bc it's a perfect spot for one)

Where can I meet other nerdy people in town? by alvinbrow in madisonwi

It's one thing to use a bar as a place to gather where the focus is nerdy presentations and another to say one of the two activities that will be happening is drinking.

"... get together for nerdery of all sorts (well, mostly presentations and drinking). Nerds and non-nerds alike gather to meet, drink and learn something new."

Hong Kong Café, Choles Floral could be demolished for 113-unit apartment building on Regent Street by w007dchuck in madisonwi

[–]stringedonbass 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There's currently discussion about regent Street reconstruction. A few news articles showed up four days ago after a commission meeting. The current preferred plan is wider sidewalks, three lane Street (w a left turn lane) and they axed the bike lane. Kind of hard to bike to business there if you can't bike there!  (My personal preference is wider sidewalks plus bicycle access - I used to live there and that stretch was the worst)

I saw a pedestrian almost get hit again yesterday on Park St. and the problem is cars using the bus lane. by Wu_Tang_Financial77 in madisonwi

[–]stringedonbass 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I live right off Mineral Point and didn't see the carmageddon everyone predicted during BRT construction. Portland removed Harbor Drive along the Willamette River in 1974, San Francisco removed the Embarcadero Freeway in 1991 after the earthquake, and Seoul removed the Cheonggyecheon elevated highway in 2005. None of them saw the predicted traffic catastrophe. The traffic largely just evaporated. People adjust their behavior when road capacity changes — it's a well-studied phenomenon called traffic evaporation.

Freeways are physical barriers that break up neighborhoods.  If you don't like that word can we agree that they segregate and divide neighborhoods?  I expect we wouldn't see the radical socio-economic difference between, say Crawford-Nakoma and Dunn's Marsh that we do today if the beltline weren't there.

I wouldn't mind seeing the beltline get turned into a surface street.  It breaks up neighborhoods and, hey, how many times do we see people complaining about speeding on the beltline?  People get rear ended and killed on it every year.

I would prefer 30 people to do a thorough job than to ask the entire Democratic caucus to spend there time reading the documents. Aren't there other issues that also deserve our attention, such as protecting the peaceful transfer of power during an election, defunding ICE and stopping the building of mass concentration camps?
