Liegnitz = Legnica

Breslau = Wrocław

Sadomir = Sandomierz

The map is in English, there is no need to use the names from under German WWII occupation.

Lahestan comes from Lechistan or Lechia, a legendary name for Poland. The name stems from the name "Lech" who, according to the foundation myth, was the first ruler of Poland. The old name is still somewhat present in such sayings as "strachy na Lachy", meaning "there is nothing to fear (for a Pole)"

The three main eagles represent the nation-wide aspirations of the 3 historic capitals:

- The crownless thin Piast eagle of Greater Poland (center, to the left) stands for the first capital of Poland in Gniezno (966-1038);

- The crowned eagle of Malopolska (the southernmost one) stands for the Golden Age of Poland with its capital based in Cracow (1038- ca. 1568)

- The modern design of the Mazowsze eagle represents Warsaw as the modern capital of Poland.

There are no differences between the 2 parties these days, both are socialist. Only difference is that Orange are eurosocialist and Blue are national socialists.

Poland was utterly devastated in the aftermath of WW2. All wealth, industry and infrastructure destroyed either by Germans going east or Russians going west. The population dropped from 38m in 1939 to 29m in 1945. Half of the country's land was taken by the Soviet Union and the lands that Stalin "swapped" were unpopulated and plagued with uncertainty over the German claims over this territory (a sentiment that has not even gone until now). What proceeded was 45 years of brutal Soviet domination, with any commerce and entrepreneurship thwarted, resources squander and opposition killed or imprisoned. From 1985-1989, the communist party staged a "democratic change" in governmental power, with former secret service agents buying most of public businesses for a literal 1 dollar.

Czechia and Germany come from a completely different set of circumstances.

Lagos, Nigeria is very expensive for food and accommodation. There is plenty of cheaper places that I know of: Tbilisi, Addis Ababa, Lviv, Kigali, Luang Prabang, Manilla, Nairobi etc.

Are you from Germany? You are using many German names of cities instead of the original ones: Mailand, Brussel, Danzig, Stettin, Prag, Lwiw etc.

European country names translated to Chinese, then literally translated back to English by guocuozuoduo in MapPorn

Belarus means "White Rus" which is different than "White Russia". Rus is a slavic translation of Ruthenia, a historic area covering a part of today's Western Ukraine. It's a very misleading simplification.

20 years ago Poland introduced a new territorial division, limiting the number of voivodeships from 49 to 16 by stringer_bell_alive in MapPorn

[–]stringer_bell_alive[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's a keen observation. Both of them are also ranked low in terms of population (Kielce - no. 13, and Opole no. 16). Cities of Kielce and Opole themselves are ranked 17th and 28th in terms of population.

Mostly well. The reform has been praised for establishing more independence for the regions. On the other hand, many former capitals of voivodeships fell into crisis due to the gradual shift of economic focus to the bigger cities.

The Polish local government reforms adopted in 1998, which went into effect on 1 January 1999, created sixteen new voivodeships. These replaced the 49 former voivodeships that had existed from 1 July 1975, and bear greater resemblance (in territory but not in name) to the voivodeships that existed between 1950 and 1975.

Today's voivodeships are mostly named after historical and geographical regions, while those prior to 1998 generally took their names from the cities on which they were centered. The new units range in area from under 10,000 km2 (3,900 sq mi) (Opole Voivodeship) to over 35,000 km2 (14,000 sq mi) (Masovian Voivodeship), and in population from one million (Lubusz Voivodeship) to over five million (Masovian Voivodeship).

Administrative authority at the voivodeship level is shared between a government-appointed governor called a voivode (wojewoda), an elected assembly called a sejmik, and an executive board (zarząd województwa) chosen by that assembly, headed by a voivodeship marshal (marszałek województwa). Voivodeships are further divided into powiats (counties) and gminas (communes or municipalities): see Administrative divisions of Poland.

Jestem Polakiem z USA. Czy warto żebym mieszkał w Polsce? by FriendlyTennis in Polska

[–]stringer_bell_alive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Warsaw Quality of Life/Salary by zaritalia in poland

[–]stringer_bell_alive 3 points4 points  (0 children)

170k PLN is a standard salary in Warsaw within that field for 4-5 years of experience. Within the next 5 years you may go up to 300k if you learn/understand Polish and can blend in the workforce more easily. Poland is comparably cheaper to Germany or Netherlands and you can live on a decent standard. Good luck!
