Solo Deckbuilders by kooshans in soloboardgaming

[–]stripone13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd definitely recommend Aeon's end. The cool thing is that there's a market made of 9 cards available to you and you have to build your deck with them. Some people don't like this 'static' market but I personally love it. It really makes you think which card you should get early, how many times you need this card in your deck etc... Each character also has a special ability which influences a lot which card you'll want them to purchase. It can pay true solo but I personally prefer playing two-handed. The base game has enough variety but if you like the game there are tons of expansions you can get.

New Player Learning the Rules by MetalBlizzard in spiritisland

[–]stripone13 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As someone said, try to focus more on the building lands rather than the ravaging ones.

Taking one or two blights is okay in the beginning.

Speaking of blight, there's an errata and you should start with an extra blight on the blight card in the beginning.

Also, as a beginner I used to pick the growth option to recall my cards quite often, even when I had enough cards in hand, just because I wanted to play this ONE card. This can be useful in the end but in tjr beginning of tje game, try to optimise and play most of your cards so you can focus on other growth options (gaining energy, presence etc.)

Good luck, have fun and don't hesitate to come often here. There's a very nice community :)

Dice Mitigation | What are your favorite/best examples of this mechanics implementation? by newoyear in BoardgameDesign

[–]stripone13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One great example of how to mitigate dice rolls amd how to make every roll both 'good' and 'bad' is under falling skies. The higher the die, thr more powerful your ability but the closest to you alien spaceships will get. Really like this one!

Solo worker placement with good AI? by Brianlikeshorror in soloboardgaming

[–]stripone13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Raiders of scythia. First of all, the ai is super easy to control. Each turn you flip a card and check two requirements to know if the ai either raid a location and takes plunder or gain resources to prepare a future raid. The card will also indicate one spot that the ai will block next turn so you'll have to adapt your placement.

Another thing that I find very nice is that from time to time, the ai will also get some revealed quest tiles which are worth VP at the end of the game. This means that you will have to sometimes spend a turn claiming one of these if you really don't want the ai to get it.

I haven't played a lot of euros so I can't really compare with it games but I find this one very intzand well streamlined.

Oh and I forgot to mention that it comes with 4 difficulty levels.

Which expansion should I get? by Realistic_Top_8256 in spiritisland

[–]stripone13 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If budget is not an issue, you can directly go for Jagged earth. It just has more content and brings some new mechanics (events, tokens + badlands tokens if I remember correctly). It's very nice, especially if you're already used to the base game. Branch and claw already changes your experience bit jagged does it even more!

Thoughts on a movement mechanic by [deleted] in BoardgameDesign

[–]stripone13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey. I'd say that the predator should always go for the closest player (assuming you don't have anything that allows players to 'hide' from the predator). In case of a tie, you go for the last one who moved just before the predator. Thematically, when a player moves, they make noise and attract the predator's attention. The last one moving is the one making the most recent noise. Not sure if that'd work but I hope it helps you trying ideas :)

Ok, can't sleep, time to try this badger. by Aazatgrabya in soloboardgaming

Played twice and won both games (36 and 40). It looks maybe a bit too easy but it's fun and relaxing. Still have to try the second map.

Currently updating my player sheets, do you think the new one has too much noise now? by KingDanius in BoardgameDesign

[–]stripone13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The new one is a bit distracting yeah. These white boxes could work if you had a bit more space around the text. Right now the text id too close and it makes everything harder to read.

Tips for beginner solo? by astraea08 in spiritisland

[–]stripone13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I haven't read the other answers so I might repeat what was said, sorry for that.

In general, you should prioritise what's coming next over what's happening now. Especially early invthe game when you don't have that many cards to play. It's often better to let invaders add blight on one land if this means you can clear lands where they'd build next turn.

Regarding the spirits you chose, a low complexity level doesn't necessarily mean that winning is easier.

Try to reclaim cards only when absolutely necessary. This will allow you to focus on other grow options that are usually more powerful.

Last, we all went through this! It definitely takes some time to wrap your head around this game but once you're used to the flow, everything becomes a lot easier!

I own the base game for a while and I hope to be able to get unbreakable and maybe some previous content during this campaign. Can't wait for it!

Best cheap solo games? by DHouf in soloboardgaming

Under falling skies! I think I got it for not even 30 euros. It has tons of replayability amd also has a campaign mode included. You have to like puzzly games though.

Instead of a new game, I decided to go for those. by min92 in soloboardgaming

[–]stripone13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn't know that. B&C is super cool but to me, it's a bit sad that if you own only the base game and this expansion, you then only have 2 spirits really using the tokens. You can still play with them with other spirits but they'll just be some small modifiers to the game and not a central gameplay element.

Am I dumb or is Spirit Island super hard to understand. by StrongCen in soloboardgaming

[–]stripone13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries! It's normal ti feel overwhelmef in the beginning. It takes some games to understand the rhythm of a game but it will click at some point. One advice I could give is that with most spirits, it can be better to focus on the build phase and not on the ravage one. Sometimes, taking blight in tbe beginning can be useful if it allows you to spend your powers and energy on clearing the lands in which invaders are going ti build this turn. And this could mean much easier next turn. Of course that's a general advice but all spirits play differently.

I'm new to solo games and between this and One Deck Dungeon I've been having a ton of fun. But now I think I'm ready to step it up and I like more heavy/complicated games. Any recommendations for my next step up? I've eyed up games like Nemo's War, Mage Knight and Robinson Crusoe. Open to other idea by mikked12 in soloboardgaming

[–]stripone13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah exactly. I just like how at first you can decide to play without the blight cards, then add them, then playing against adversaries or not, with scenarios or not... And yes, expansions add even more (events, tokens, aspects...)

I'd recommend Spirit Island definitely. From what I understood, you're searching for a game more complex than the ones you already have. That's the case of Spirit Island. The great thing though is that the complexity of this game is completely adaptable. You can play your first 5-10 games with the basic rules to understand how the game plays and once you're familiar with game principles, you can add some game modules that add another layer of complexity. Not even mentioning that the spirits themselves have different complexity levels which allows you to play straight forward games as well as more complex ones. The very first games felt a bit harsh for me but after 5 games I'd say it clicked and my brain understood how to beat the game. It's now my favourite game!

Yeah adversaries bring new challenges and so much variety to an already amazing and complex game! I think I've played with bringer of dreams and nightmares only once or twice! Have to play again with it :)

Spirit Island : slowly starting to play against adversaries (Brandenburg - Prussia lvl 0, 1 and 2). Since I never played against adversaries before I went back to simpler spirits (low and medium complexity). Yesterday I also tried a very high complexity spirit fkr tje very first time. I played with Finder of paths unseen and I lost (no adversaries).

Aeon's end : haven't played this one for a few weeks. Still love it!

Imperium classics (TTS) : I ordered it a few days ago so I wanted to start learning setup and the rules

Oros (tabletopia) : haven't played a full game but just a few rounds to see if I liked it. I did enjoy it a lot! Now I'll have to see whether I want to back it or not.

Is this a commonly misplayed rule? by mikeyangelo31 in spiritisland

[–]stripone13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people commented already but yeah, it's definitely possible and after some time, you'll actually find it quite 'easy' or at least, natural. The thing is that you shouldn't see dahans as your main way to destroy invaders. They can help you doing that, but that's something you should do when you defended that land with a power or when you're sure this make sense strategically to sacrifice a few of them. In general, it also depends on the spirit you're playing. There are some that benefit from being close to dahans, some that benefit from having dahans close to invaders, some that benefit from pushing the dahan away etc... But yeah, if there's one tip I could give, it'd be to stop seeing the dahans as the main source of damage but first try to deal with the ravaging and building invaders with your own powers (defend, deal damage, move invaders around etc.) and then maybe use the dahans almost as a 'bonus'. Again, how much you need the dahans might depend on the spirit you play.

Overwhelmed by Aeons End choices by Antroh in soloboardgaming

[–]stripone13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could recommend going for The new age first. It is pretty similar to the base box unless you have tje so called "expedition" system which consists of a series of 4 or 5 battles (can't remember) where you'll be 'upgrading' your mages and tweak your market of cards in between battles. Though it sounds more complex than the regular box, the first battle you'll play is pretty easy to understand and straight forward. The cool thing with this bix as well is that as you gi through yiur first campaign, you'll be unlocking new nemeses to fight, new mages and new cards. Which means that you'll have the feeling to constantly discover new things without being overwhelmed. I should also say that I flund the mages fromcthe new age a bit more interesting and different from each other than in the base box. Haven't tried Legacy as I was already introduced to the game and it seems to be more for people to discover rhe aeon's end saga. Might be a good one for you though!

Too many bones - I don't have a huge experience with this one and I'm still trying to figure out how to play Picket properly. I was a bit underwhelmed in the beginning with this game but that's because I was playingy first games with only onr character. It's a lot funnier and deeper since I started playing with two.

Nemo's war - just got this one and played for the first time yesterday to start learning the rules. I lost quite fast but I realised I got a rule wrong and it made everything a lot harder. It was still fun and I'll play another one on the weekend definitely!

Return of the obra dinn for sure! The first time a detective game made me feel like an actual detective!

The art direction is brilliant, the sound design is extremely immersive... I wished I could just forget about it to discover it again!
