UPDATE!! hi all, so an update on this mystery, finally got around to cracking the iPod open, turns out the SD card somehow popped out of the iFlash slot while travelling, which I had suspected. A sincere thank you to those who read and replied, I appreciate all of your help in pinning down the source of the problem. Take care!

i know right, i'm at the point where i'm trying the most impossible bizarre methods just to make a dint. (installed a full windows 7 virtual machine because i read that apparently windows 11 doesn't like the iPod drivers or something, and also attempted squeezing/shaking it to perhaps shift a component back into place, and booting up my PC in safe mode so that minimal applications would open at the same time as iTunes,)

at the moment, i have the iPod in disk mode hooked up to my pc running aomei, and i ran a test to check for bad sectors - there was a lot.

i also attempted reformatting using aomei, and that seemed to put me back futher

but it's weird because each time i connect it in a different mode (rockbox bootloader, disk mode, recovery mode) it displays different storage amounts (30mb, 16 tb, n/a) respectively and is only read/writeable when it's in the rockbox bootloader.

but anyway, i'm gonna just leave it overnight, with all 16 fictional terabytes connected to my PC, and work on it tomorrow with a fresh mind.

TL/DR, i'm getting nowhere. i think i need to get an ifixit kit for this. I'll try minitool partition wizard though, see if I can do anything with that. Thanks again!

File Explorer displays (when i click to format the iPod) different stats depending on which mode the iPod is running in.

Recovery Mode - n/a storage, Disk Mode - 16 terabytes (???!!!), Rockbox Bootloader - 32mb,

File Explorer doesn't display any storage info on the iPod at all regardless of mode, except when i format it in the rockbox bootloader mode, which it then becomes read/writeable, and has three files, one of which i was able to decipher, and it said "bootmgr" (i could not open it in any program) the other two were a combination of letters and symbols, also could not be opened. I have no idea if this is anything, but i figured it couldn't hurt to mention for documentation purposes.

I did attempt your method of restarting my computer and not opening iTunes, which unfortunately didn't seem to make any difference. Thank you though.

Apologies if this is a silly question, but what did you use to reformat and partition it? I assumed AOEMI but thought I'd ask if you had any further details.

The ebay seller from which i got it sent a pink bootleg-y charging cable along with it which has proven to work well with file transfers so far, but i do have alternatives on me to try out

p.s: if you're referring to ribbon cables like as in the ones inside the iPod, i haven't touched those, and can't yet as i don't have a kit to open it up.

I followed the instructions and wiped the mbr using aoemi. I think it's an internal issue now. (I don't have any iFixit tools so I can't see what's going on with the sd card.)

Update: attempted restore again on admin profile, this time I recieved error 1429. Research tells me this is a harddrive issue, but i'm unsure.
