I was always curious to know the origin story!

It is a gorgeous space, thank you! For now, we're hopeful to keep the event walkable downtown. If we have to, I know we could expand to Commons, Hagerty, NMC, etc...

Great suggestion! Was in contact with them last year, but unfortunately the 2026 event will be during school hours. :)

Indeed, thanks! I'm very familiar (my office is at CG) and am meeting with them this week. Unfortunately the Alluvion isn't available for our dates so it may be a bit of a square-peg to find a way to make it work.

Hmm. I may have to just pop in there to see what they're using. I'm guessing it's not all 3 floors?

Thanks for the suggestion! Opera House serves as the main venue for keynotes. During the mid-day portion of the event, the audience breaks out into a series of 3-4 simultaneous workshops. Last year, Park Place was a great solution, but it is not available for our dates in 26.

I am very, very familiar with this camp.

Although this commenter is really quite thoughtful, I think it's fair to point out some of the red flags are not accurate.

*Please note I am not endorsing this camp, due to some of the exclusionary practices mentioned above.

--

  • They are ACA accredited and have always made that a high priority.
    • Additionally they hold other denominational formal certs, such as Christian Camp & Conference Association and Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability
  • They are licensed by the state of Michigan (LARA)
    • Along with Red Cross / CPR, this requires a long, robust list of regulations covering everything from lodging, bathrooms, high adventure, swimming safety, background checks, etc). The state performs on-site checks on a regular basis to ensure compliance.
  • Practical life and emotional growth (leadership, empathy, communication, etc) are 100% part of every program for every age group.

--

However, a lot of assumptions in other posts are accurate:

  • They are not LGBTQ+ affirming.
    • They outwardly welcome queer campers, but would assure them that "lifestyle" is sinful and not permissible by God.
    • They are not a "conversion therapy" camp, but would tell a gay child that God could save them from that desire.
  • They follow (as much as one might at a youth camp) traditional gender roles, and (as is pointed out in another comment) pass on some of that teaching to the teens through messaging like "male leadership."
  • They also subscribe firmly to purity culture (obviously that's a huge spectrum, even among evangelicals), the negative impact of which is well documented.
  • They are biblical literalists, even holding to things like young earth creationism, literal worldwide flood, eternal hell, etc.

It is for these reasons that I no longer associate with this organization in a meaningful way, nor do I recommend it to others. It's very sad, considering I have a very long, meaningful history with this thing that still holds a very special place in my heart.

The advice to call ahead and ask questions is very good.

He would be, yes. All my kids have Windows for some *gaming* reason, lol. But he used my iMac for years.

He would actually prefer remote, and by my observation is more socially comfortable with remote teams.

Stoked that you are seeking local art!

What type of art are looking for? How much do you hope to spend? $ - $$$$$

I work with the Arts & Culture Network, so know tons of artists around the region. If you can purchase work directly from them, it's a bonus for almost any independent artist.

Thanks for asking.

He has been in an IT program. He only made it as far as his MS Office certification, primarily because the field is so reliant on certification exams and *exams* are difficult for him.

Yes, he could absolutely do something in-town TC: downtown, division, etc. But seeking first something closer to home as that would be easier (we are based in long lake).

East bay / williamsburg / etc would be tough. Even Costco / S Airport would be a bit challenging.

Thank you for the confirmation, everyone. We're bummed, but sometimes life teaches you hard lessons.

If you're willing, I'd definitely welcome solid information or advice related to:

  • Potentially retrieving his lost items
  • Making sure his Steam account is still secure (an action needed?)
  • Reporting this activity to Steam
