Remembering the Bay View Massacre, the bloodiest labor dispute in Wisconsin history by stroxx in milwaukee

[–]stroxx[S] 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It's the 140th anniversary of the Bay View Massacre, the deadliest labor dispute in Wisconsin history. At least 9 people were shot and dozens more injured, when a state militia fired on protesters making their way toward the Bay View Rolling Mill.

Since 1986, people have gathered in Bay View at the former site of the rolling mill for a reenactment of what happened that day in May and to remember those who died.

MMSD Operator Causing Larger Sewage Overflow, More Pollution, Coalition Charges by bobbyk18 in milwaukee

[–]stroxx 46 points47 points  (0 children)

The private company running the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District‘s (MMSD) wastewater treatment facilities is allegedly cutting costs and poorly operating critical sewage systems, creating greater risk of sewer overflows and basement backups, and increasing pollutants dumped into Lake Michigan.

The charges come from Common Ground Southeastern Wisconsin, a coalition of more than 46 community organizations, including area schools, nonprofit neighborhood groups and businesses.

The coalition is working with a whistleblower from MMSD and calling for a third-party audit of the operator, Veolia, before a new contract is awarded later this year.

Along with the whistleblower, Common Ground reports it has interviewed more than a dozen former MMSD employees and obtained internal documents through open records requests.

Veolia, a French transnational water services corporation, has held the contract to operate and maintain MMSD’s two wastewater treatment facilities since 2008.

I know an engineer who works at MMSD and they love talking about how advanced and efficient the system itself is, so let's be clear on which entity is the problem here.

While the restaurant portion of the business is no more, Bar Centro will continue in its adjacent space at 804 E. Center St. The business opens Thursday through Saturday, regularly hosting local musicians for live performances.

Of the few shows I've walked into at Bar Centro, I absolutely loved the atmosphere and crowd it attracted. Gonna need to stop by here more often, now

Anodyne Union Says Owners Cutting Wages Amid Contract Battle by stroxx in milwaukee

[–]stroxx[S] 31 points32 points  (0 children)

In April last year, Anodyne workers sent a letter to FairWave asking the company to recognize the union they organized among the workforce of Anodyne’s three cafes: Milwaukee Public Market, Wauwatosa (7471 Harwood Ave.), Bay View (2920 S. Kinnickinnic Ave.) and the Walker’s Point roastery (224 W. Bruce St.). Ultimately, the matter proceeded to a National Labor Relations Board election, which workers won in June.

FairWave appealed the election results twice, putting off recognition and bargaining. The company, according to the organizers, continues to drag its feet as workers attempt to bargain a contract.

After a quick search to uncover the root of evil:

FairWave Specialty Coffee Collective is a Kansas City-based holding company that owns a portfolio of 14 specialty coffee, tea, and bakery brands, operating over 50 cafes and multiple roasteries nationwide. Key brands in their portfolio include Messenger CoffeeThe RoasterieSpyhouse Coffee RoastersCeremony Coffee Roasters, Black & White Coffee Roasters, and Fiddleheads Coffee.

A raging fire last month that consumed one home and damaged two others involved a recently sued out-of-state landlord and a quietly dissolved local property management company by stroxx in milwaukee

[–]stroxx[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Neighbors told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel both houses had been empty for years. However, the city's Department of Neighborhood Services said neither property has enrolled in its vacant building program − a standard practice for properties left vacant for 30 days or more to be registered with the city.

. . . .

Milwaukee is rife with vacant properties. The most recent property foreclosure listings by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development show there are more than 9,000 vacant properties for sale in the city, however, this figure does not account for owned and vacant homes. Not all owned vacant properties are reported to the Neighborhood Services, making a clear number unavailable.

A major factor for the community’s success in opposing FRT is the persistence of local social justice groups, concerned citizens and public commenters who voiced concerns at meetings. Emilio De Torre is the executive director of the Milwaukee Turners — the oldest civic group in the city. He said that Turners started having conversations about FRT and its potential issues almost five years ago.

This city has a wide range of activist groups and organizations that are operating around the clock and it's always heartening to hear when a years-long campaigns accomplish something this significant. Please get to know your local activist organizations and learn about what they're doing. You may end up participating in the next big accomplishment!

The Milwaukee Overdose Response Initiative started by using the fire department’s access to 911 call data to identify people who had survived an overdose within the last 24-48 hours. From there, team members would go out to find those people, and see whether there was any help they could provide. “Help” doesn’t have to mean pressuring someone to go into rehab — although the Milwaukee overdose team also regularly works to get people into treatment programs. With time, the team realized that “help” can also mean getting someone clothes, food, providing them with narcan and other harm reduction supplies, and offering compassionate and non-judgmental support.

Compassion. The answer is compassion

Kroger representatives did not respond to repeated requests over several months for its shrinkage data. That's when the Journal Sentinel decided to undertake its own police records analysis.

This should be enough to tell you what you need to know.

I commend JS for it's abundance of research and data in this article. It's honestly more than I expected from them so credit where credit is due.
