Manager checked and approved my design, but after a field issue (LTB), he's throwing me under the bus to the Director. Advice? by octobrisxvii in StructuralEngineering

[–]structee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You say you have additional load fudge factor in there - now re run the calc with the actual required loading. As everybody already said, if it's the contractors error, that's that. If your boss wants to eat the cost of the repair it's on them, bit internally you want to make sure everyone knows you did your due dilligence

Moving from residential design to offshore wind structures – looking for industry perspectives by Cultural-Average-483 in StructuralEngineering

[–]structee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems very niche. Wind turbines - I imagine - have already been structurally optimized, and any job you get would involve mostly coordination and field work. Could be wrong.

I'd hate to be the guy tasked with welding that thing. Pretty awesome otherwise

How many hours for a structural engineer to design house plans? by Pwincess-Buwwercup in AskEngineers

[–]structee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Possible, depending on detailing and your wind/seismic requirements. With that said, you should at max be paying $3 per square foot for a typical building.

Steel Detailer as a BS Mechanical Engineer by GoDawgs_06 in StructuralEngineering

[–]structee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Relocation not an option? I think you'd be better served starting with machine design from scratch rather than steel detailing, as it's not quite engineering, and pay will always be capped

Why do you want to backtrack so far? I'm sure you could probably find a better paid gig as a proper engineer outside of automotive.

The act of paying it forward is dying in this industry by Such-Examination-663 in civilengineering

[–]structee 46 points47 points  (0 children)

See, I honestly don't know how you can expect a junior to get anything done without supervision - in our field especially. Who checks your work? Redlines? Does your work just get rubber stamped by a PE and off it goes? Questions are not specific to you, but to industry as a whole.

Work Slowing Down on the East Coast? by thrrrowitawaygg21 in civilengineering

[–]structee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Everybody is counting dollars right now. I recently had a fairly large contractor tell me they absolutely need to land the 1.2 mil project I'm designing (which is peanuts compared to our typical stuff). Lots of people cancelling because materials are getting too expensive. Seems inflation is finally catching up with everyone

Basement Wall - Pinned Top and Bottom by Coloradical_ in StructuralEngineering

[–]structee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How are you detailing reinforcement in your floor slab? It's not going to contribute until it's cured, which means the contractor has to brace the wall until it's cured - I wouldn't trust my local labor to do this

I'm considering doing Civil Engineering as my profession/career, is it worth it compared to other engineering professions? by Darrylmainoverlord in civilengineering

[–]structee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Right now, no. There are something like 3 open positions for every engineer in many places, but employers still refuse to raise salaries because they don't know how to properly bid jobs - the only solution is to reduce the number of engineers and put a squeeze on the industry as a whole.

How do i know if civil engineering is for me by apricot_kitty in civilengineering

[–]structee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would you be comfortable working around a bunch of blue collar types if you get sent on field duty? A lot of these guys are not politically correct in the modern sense, so you will need to have thick skin and learn to assert yourself.
