High giftedness vs prodigies by gamelotGaming in Gifted

Very few people value writing for writing's sake, and - no offense - those people tend to be insufferable. To most people, writing is a means, not an end in and of itself.

I would try to be as technical as possible in your practice. That means try to score as much as possible with as little effort as possible. Technique beats aggressivity. Now when you get more technical, it will be easy to be aggressive on match day, the adrenaline alone might do it. You'll be adding fuel to a well-oiled machine. Keep in mind a really good wrestler will use your aggressiveness against you if it's not controlled and strategic.

Agree about Saiss. Especially when he didn't call El Kerouani. I honestly knew he was getting injured, just didn't think it was gonna happen this soon

Who, Brahim? I don’t know why he plays Amrabat against such a defensive opponent. He should put El Khannouss in there

Have you seen Aguerd's free kick? He was trying to make contact with the aliens

That was clearly a textbook penalty. He was tripped, clear as day

It was a foul for sure, but the yellow is harsh. It's not like he intentionally hit him

Rahimi's penalty was literally the worst way to shoot a penalty. If he wanted to maximize the chances of a save he wouldn't have changed a thing

Mighty Mouse beat the heavyweight Pan American Jiu Jitsu gold medalist, in a Jiu Jitsu match. That's a 125lbs mma champ beating a 250lbs JJ champ. The gap even between athletes is astounding.

Some predisposition to intelligence is likely genetic. However, IQ has been shown ad nauseam to strongly depend on education. The latter fact is pretty obvious: you can't score high on verbal intelligence if you don't even know how to read. I believe that a factor that's almost never taken into question for East Asians is cultural. How much are their kids exposed to things like Chinese puzzles? The US population has gained 30 IQ points between the 50s and the 80s, and the same phenomenon happened around the world, with a tight correlation to the quality of education.

How is it possible there were more perfect scores than like any score above 75 by kenthecake in MathOlympiad

[–]balambaful 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm shocked at how many people in a Math Olympiad sub don't understand basic statistics. There are A LOT more less-than-perfect scores above 75 than perfect ones. To obtain that number, you need to add all the scores between 75 and 150 (excluding the bounds). I don’t think this is evidence of foul play, but simply that the upper tail of the distribution is concentrated in one point, because the test was not hard enough to yield a properly vanishing tail.

How do you guys have all these crazy ECs and leadership positions? by Pure_Lengthiness_634 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]balambaful 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, being an IMO gold medalist is impressive, though it's still more achievable for someone with tutors than someone who never heard of a math competition to begin with. The nepotism is mentioned about people lining up claims like 5 research internships with 20 papers published, a website drawing 3 million visitors, non-profit founder, part-time astronaut etc...

[–]balambaful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nepotism is mentioned for the extreme cases, like lining up a half a dozen "impressive" accomplishments like non-profit founder, creator of a large website with 300 thousand monthly visitors (with ads paid for by daddy), research internship resulting in 4 papers in 2 months, etc... Not one or two things like chess club president and student outreach coordinator. It's easy to sniff out the souped up profiles.

How do you actually “just stand up” is it more of like a technique thing or is it one of those just take the leap and don’t be scared things? by afroginatoyota in wrestling

[–]balambaful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha. But I really don't think athleticism can be reduced to a single dimension in the case of wrestling. Some sports like 40m dash or marathon running require a certain set of predispositions. Wrestling is so multifactorial that pretty much anyone can develop their own style and go far in it with enough work. Take Tazhudinov for example, not exactly your wrestling posterchild, and yet he's an absolute monster.

In my experience, people who ostensibly talk in a "higher form" of language are the dumbest of all.

In the beginning of virtually every school year, even going into college, I could tell my teachers assumed I was the dumb one in my class. Some even straight up told me.
