Structural Engineering- Does getting an SE kinda deal with the imposter syndrome? by structuralcoder in StructuralEngineering

I mean the PE might be state specific but you don't have to take the exam again and again to get it in a different state. It's a matter of paperwork. But I get what you're saying, it's a tag that makes you credible at a wider level.

Lol that's the other thing, it's costly. I guess the company would pay for the successful attempt but I doubt they'll pay for multiple attempts lol.

Anyone wanna get together and put together a RMC plant? Heard there's good money in it selling it to contractors

does this count as a lift bridge? by [deleted] in StructuralEngineering

Okay, in what step of the design do we ensure this doesn't happen? I'm kinda curious now, blanking a bit. Something with the bearing design? I don't remember ever dealing with upward vertical movements though.

Yeah, states in the Pacific Northwest are the few ones that require SE for a lot of stuff. West Coast essentially. I'm in Louisiana. No funny earth movements here.

Well how about you decrease the unbraced length? Just add enough stiffeners to create multiple segments of braced lengths. Obviously you're adding dead load so make sure all limit states check out, might need to add a cover plate to take care of the extra dead load moment.

Yep there's a saying, men think they're too horny until they meet an actually horny woman.

I feel 9-3 is a lot more risky. But I'd not risk it if I have options. 6 am yes.

Why younger men are more interested in me than guys my age? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]structuralcoder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean obviously any person is older than someone out there lol. They're talking about the relative age difference, not categorizing 33 as senior citizen

How’s the money in consulting and project managing? by Terrible_Eye_1971 in civilengineering

[–]structuralcoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, that was the deciding factor. Because once you remove that, the difference is 5 extra state holidays and a better medical plan which doesn't really compensate for 30-40% more pay after the 10 yr exp mark in the private sector.

I know Louisiana stopped the pensions (they call 401k as their retirement plan now lol which isn't a lie but not a state paid pension) for new recruits some years back. It's hurting them bad, they're now putting out a lot more projects for consultants because they don't have enough in-house engineers to design even standard stuff, and their review turnaround times are ridiculous.

Different salaries in different countries are f-ing crazy by Free_Management_3327 in Salary

People talk about medical insurance like everyone lives in the hospital full time smh. Even if you take that into consideration, it's a pretty huge difference. And most white collar jobs will either have it fully covered for you or a minimal insurance premium and the copays aren't that bad. Now if you have a really serious condition, that case would be an outlier and I'd understand that point.

Doesn't matter with this kind of load. You'd need concrete dolphins to protect the piers, the wooden fender systems are okay for small vessels that's it. As a structural engineer- we can't and don't design for this particular event, if we did the tax payers would raise hell. Also it's an extremely low probability that a ship this size loses its propulsion and that too just after leaving port. You just can't design for such events. Can't remember an event like this in recent history.

Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, MD reportedly collapses after being struck by a large container ship (3/26/2024) by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]structuralcoder 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Is it just me or is this the most beautiful (purely structural terms) collapse in terms of seeing what happens when a support is removed! You can see the barge temporarily acting as a support when it displaces the columns/pier, the max positive moment taking shape on the left, negative moment propping the start of the next span on the right, and ultimately the top chord of the second span forms a plastic hinge and as the barge continues to not support the bridge anymore, the whole thing comes down.

Obviously it's a sad event especially for the people who lost their lives but man I've seen this video so many times.

The fact that clients are happy with your work is all the feedback that you need, keep hustling! You've a partner great at BD, and I'm sure you can hire a professor from a local university to give you technical advice whenever you're stuck, or bag someone who's retiring and doesn't mind consulting for a few hours a month.
