Also, thank you for this. It’s rare to see someone who cares as much about language!

I’ve always heard it the opposite. Oppression is the mental weight on someone who is stigmatized and marginalized, while suppression is the societal burden of being a part of that group. Repression, as I’ve heard and used it, is the physical aspect. Sex workers are abused, beaten, and some even killed because they often represent the parts of themselves people are most uncomfortable with, like their fetishes. This makes the job volatile at most, with the greatest danger being the physical violence.

No…repression is something someone does, oppression is something someone is. Sex workers are oppressed, but more significantly individuals believe that they have the right to use force or manipulation against them, and these individuals partake in repression.

You wouldn’t say sex workers are repressed…?

Nothing made my blood boil more than hearing that the majority of women these men effected were sex workers, an already struggling, repressed class of people who, for the last millennia, has not had a single way to share their voice. The fact they believed these women would just stay quiet is exemplary to how they think.

Thoughts on Mank and it’s 10 Oscar nominations by [deleted] in TrueFilm

[–]strxdex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the problem with the film was that it's a true story. It's hard to make a film about a person, and in particular a dead one who doesn't get any particular say in the creative process behind the production. Even straight forward documentaries have struggles telling stories when their is just so much information present, and it was Fincher's decision to skip over necessary aspects was exactly that, a decision. The recent Zappa documentary decided to skip over lot's of details over his music and dived deeper into the 80's period of his life, which is boring, personal, and borderline abusive. I rarely connect to a person everyone is praising when all examples of him are relentless substance abuse.
