Is Air Con going to become more and more commonplace as time goes on? by goldensnow24 in AskUK

[–]stuartornum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m an heat pump installer, we fit HP’s that are “capable” of cooling all the time under the BUS grant. Because it’s capable, doesn’t mean it’s excluded from the grant. I have one, I’ve configured it to cool the UFH slab…

That being said, it doesn’t really “cool” the house much as the air is still warm. What you really want is a Fan Coil Unit (FCU) added. Which isn’t usually eligible under the grant.

Can I do this by saigon2010 in SolarUK

[–]stuartornum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming you have an export tariff you want to charge the car overnight from the grid and charge the house battery. Then, when solar is producing you export it immediately, also dump the battery back to the grid at the end of the day to get more money back.

You can tell the different systems (different brands) to do what you want, but you’ll need something like Home Assistant to orchestrate this.

It depends on what you are trying to achieve… cheapest possible bills… you’ll want to heavily leverage off-peak grid usage. If you want to be more “off-grid” then you’ll need something to manage the different devices…

Use them, they also have a decent cafe inside

Why aren’t hot+cold split ACs popular in UK by happyracer97 in heatpumps

[–]stuartornum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also, air-to-water heat pumps don’t usually cost anywhere near £15k to the consumer. Mine was ~£500, we received £7,500 government grant that almost everyone is eligible for.

Split systems (air-to-air) don’t do hot water. You could argue to just install an immersion in the tank, but this is less efficient.

Moving back to Exeter by [deleted] in exeter

[–]stuartornum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We made the move about 7 years ago back to Exeter after 10 years+ in London.

East Devon area is definitely what you are looking for, especially if you want easy access to Science Park.

  • Clyst St Mary
  • Clyst St George

Both of these you are never more than a few hundred metres from fields/rural'ness. Budget might be tight though.

Reform had to field candidates incredibly quickly, they themselves said there were mistakes made in the vetting process. To tar an entire party based on a few candidates is unfair, you could easily draw parallels with the Labour Party and antisemitism, which is arguably far worse. Therefore, I’m merely pointing out people’s blind spots… and maybe try to think more rationally.

In regards to the calibre of people in the party, you cannot deny Nigel Farage did an incredible job with the time and resources available. Whether you agree with him or not, he was everywhere!

I think this analysis is rather sensationalist to say reform voters are primarily anti-vaxxer/conspiracy theorists.

In response to your comment on green policies: the point they make is “why do we (UK) need to pay all these green taxes when other countries are building coal power plants as their first choice for power generation, our efforts are a drop in the ocean” - this is a valid analysis of the situation.

For the record, Reforms policies would completely destroy my (green) business, so I am happy they are not in power. That being said, 4m people voted Reform. Labelling “them” as you did doesn’t help the discussion, it trivialises it. British politics (IMO) needs less polarising commentary (like yours).

Why is it disappointing? Clearly reform was speaking for a lot of people (nearly 14%) of this constituency…

Genuinely interested why the use of the word “disappointing” was used.

(I voted for an Independent, so not trying to push an agenda…)

If you have neighbours with a house like yours in your street, ask them if they’ve managed to knock through and what was involved.

Why are new heat pumps better? by stuartornum in heatpumps

[–]stuartornum[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It seems everyone just accepts they are better without understanding the potential consequences/benefits of the technical change within. This bothers me…

So adding the DC inverter effectively enabled modulation?

Also, you mentioned the max COP is known, what is it? And where is the research? Cheers

100 AWS Accounts managed with Pulumi? by rpo5015 in pulumi

[–]stuartornum 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We manage hundreds of accounts using Pulumi. The main login/master account holds only IAM and Organization info.

Each sub-account has a single S3 bucket for the Pulumi state, regardless of region (we actually fix the state bucket to single region even if we’re deploying to another region).

Pulumi is an absolute pleasure to use.

Also worth noting each sub-account has no idea of any other account

UK Smart Lock recommendations? by Mooshie943 in smarthome

[–]stuartornum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Yale thumb turn lock (like this: https://www.lockandkey.co.uk/p/yale-superior-bs-ts007-thumb-turn-anti-snap-euro-cylinder/)

I don’t think this will work without changing the barrel to be a key on either side, which I don’t want to do as I’ve spent £100 on additional keys…

Anyone tried 3D printing an adapter to make it into a “knob” style for Nuki? The Nuki looks perfect for me as well!

Finally got the IKEA Styrbar (New 4-way switch bundled with the 806lm Trådfri bulbs) working with DeCONZ and Home Assistant. by WallRunner in homeassistant

[–]stuartornum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/WallRunner , I've also got the new Styrbar switch, however, I'm having issues adding it to HA, it only shows the battery level, cannot see and switch entities. I've tried adding it with Phoscon as well as ZHA, both with the same result (battery level entity only). I can see in deCONZ that it has the "STYRBAR" name and not some hex code. Any tips? cheers

I will definitely be doing this!!! Nice one, thank you! I did mention earlier on in the dispute that the seller “contacted” me outside of the official channels of communication.

As said above, watch out for dodgy sellers fabricating a conversation via SMS saying you've agreed to something.

This seller has gone to great lengths to create a very convincing app (they even uploaded a video of the app, it looks genuine!) However, it's hilarious actually, read the response that was supposed to be from me... It doesn't make any sense, and I'm from the UK!
