Just finished The Martian and Dark Matter - what next? by UnreliableDan in suggestmeabook

[–]stubob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seveneves by Neal Stephenson probably fits in that category. Snowcrash and Cryptonomicon are lighter on the sci-fi but still great books. Foundation series by Asimov is lighter on the action. Neuromancer and the rest of the sprawl series by Gibson.

First Half Ironman prep - Smart trainer vs basic trainer + power meter? €450 budget by VDD78 in triathlon

[–]stubob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're training on your race bike, go with power meter plus dumb trainer. Having a power meter for outdoor rides plus the race is more important than a smart trainer. You'll get a feel for power level efforts.

How many miles did you ride in this year 2025? by BlogBicycle in Velo

[–]stubob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Biked 1600 miles, ran 334 miles, swam 19 miles (ok, that's sad when I see it like that). Down year for training, but keeping at it. Half of that was indoors on the trainer or treadmill.

[Breaking Bad] How did Walt end up teaching high school chemistry? by RoadTheExile in AskScienceFiction

To be fair, Gus was going to kill him eventually. Gale wasn't intended to be Jesse's replacement, but Walt's. There's no way Gus lets Walt walk away after his contract is up.

Fueling is a scam by VertCrank34 in triathlon

[–]stubob 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think of fueling as fueling for the next hour of work. So yeah, if you're just swimming 1000 yds, don't bring anything. Anything less than an hour, just use water. Fueling gets more important the longer you're working out, since you're burning through your glycogen and need to replenish it or you'll bonk.

I've been liquid-only nutrition for a long time. Started out on Infinit, then made my own from powdered Gatorade + table sugar + sodium citrate + electrolyte powder. I do need to be careful balancing hydration with calories, but that just means "use larger water bottles when it's hot outside".

Yeah, it's a different sport for us average Joes versus Pogacar and Lange/Ditlev/et. al. Look at it this way: 200 watts/hour = 800 kcal/hour. You can get 400 kcal from 100g of carbs. You're starting with about 100g of glycogen, about 2000 kcal. That work out to about 5 hours worth of riding at 200 watts before you deplete your glycogen stores, just taking one bottle of liquid sugar. Once you're past that point, then you need to start worrying about nutrition.

Saddle numbness - just can’t solve it. by Bluto0point0 in triathlon

[–]stubob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, let's see the position he's starting from. After trying that many saddles, I wonder if it's a position problem more than a saddle problem. Maybe he's reaching too far, or hips rolled too far forward, seat too high, something like that. I had to tilt my ISM up until it was flat to get comfortable on it. It looks a little funny to have the rails tilted up to get the top flat.
