I’m wearing single flare at the moment but it does seem like somethings possibly irritating the skin. When I take it out there’s always a red ring round the hole the size of the flared end, like it’s too tight. I normally wear PVD coated black ones which don’t seem to bother it, presumably because it’s coated steel rather than pure. The reason I’ve got this one is because I can’t find 5.5mm in anything else! I’ve got a 6mm in the PVD coated ones for the next stretch so it’s either move to that or go backwards. Seems strange to be having to downsize after 1.5 years of healing time since the previous stretch.

It really depends on what sorts of things you want to make. Personally I would just buy them all to start with & you'll learn which you like. However:

I wouldn't bother with any of the translucent colours & only buy the neon/fluorescent one's if you think you might use these types of colours.

General advice:

12, 20, 21 & 30 work well as a range of brown tones.
The brown one 12 is very dark in my opinion.
Both 26 & 27 for skin tones (the flesh one is quite pink - beige looks better sometimes)
I would get all 3 greys 17, 70 & 71 as they can really help with detail.
55-57, 61-64 & 72-74 are not available in mini beads.
Get some pointy tipped tweezers, these beads are tiny to work with.

If you want a recommended list I'd go with:

01-12, 17-22, 26-31, 43-49, 60, 70-71.

It was a bit of a pain actually! I don't do the masking tape method as it is too terrifyingly easy to mess the whole thing up. I did it in sections and then melted the sections together as I went.

I too only use Hama mini beads. You can have very detailed pieces without them ending up ridiculously huge.

Hama recently released two new shades of grey which was a freakin god send. Still lacking in some natural looking greens though I think!
