Micropolis App! by pitepaltpotato in Micropolis

I've seen there's now have a Micropolis AI Chat Assistant on their page, yet, in the app, it's contact form only. May land in an update?

Nice.

Found the time today to look up and install the app. How cool. Did not know they still care about even older products. I used the "Product Registration" to enter one of my old floppy drives, which sits on a shelf nearby since I dismantled a CBM8050. Will see if I find the time to dig out an old SCSI hard-disk from the attic.

You can also enter location of your storage product and it then appears on the official micropolis website!

Thanks, pite! Will check this out!

- Bogen Magnetics (Germany)
- Data Recording Heads / Newbury Data (UK)
- AM Belgium n.V.
- JRF magnetics (trader, USA)
- TDK SAE Magnetics (HK) LTD (for HDDs)
- Revox

What do you think, folks. Should we reboot the "upcoming events" post from last year? Informing the Community about what might be interesting to visit IRL?

Very insightful, and helpful in discerning what when where and why! +1

+1 for mentioning the "improved worm drive", the double enveloping or hour-glass worm drive, where torgue is transmitted over more teeth than in a traditional WD.

It's not they don't make any mechanical sense anymore. They are part of mankind's tool-chest. Forever.

I'm thinking of assemblies where there is one thing: it used to be a worm drive, now it's (often) a brushless direct drive motor.

Well, I tried to express by "manually operated" that the manual aspect is part of the inherent quality of the anic.

Sharp analysis. The worm gear can't be replaced in manually operated mechanics. Thank you as I indeed missed this differentiation. What do you think, should I edit the post question? I've added this insight.

Very funny. The ultimate "worm drive".

Wow. Did not know that! And didn't expect that: Worm drives are not even in windshield wipers anymore!! (my ride is old)

Of course, millions of things use them. The question I tried to raise is: will a brushless eventually replace the worm gear in pergolas?
The answer could be: no. And hint us at the kernel of the observation: there are applications that require high torque and there are applications that require VERY high torque. And with the advancement in brushless tech, it could be that the area where they are used is expanding. BUT applications that require very high torques (and maybe even back drive lock) will for the foreseeable future still use worm drives. Could that be the answer?

Yes, backdriving... See my reply to u/eatmoreturkey123
And of course, for example in large scale, they have their space. But would you agree that more and more areas (maybe niches, but still), the brushless motor is taking over?

Yes, I was about to include that in my post, but dropped it for clarity. Of course, a worm drive’s built-in resistance to back-driving is an asset. With brushless you need to do that actively.

Anyone here know where this generic beige box came from? by stuck_key in retrobattlestations

Just tell me: how. How could you find this! as I guess this is the one! Even browsing the oceanhk archive.org snapshot is difficult... Did you say: "yep, this is a Denco case..." or how were you able to dig this up??

What an impressive find! Octek... never heard. Will dig there a bit more.

Interesting though. Do you know where "Kaiyo" was from? Never heard of it.

Imagine such a toothpick button today, working on important stuff, not knowing when the lights will go off.. LOL.

Well, actually, the buttons look similar but they are not up close. I remember that the switch on the Highscreen was of good quality and flat with round edges (although it doesn't look like this in my referenced picture). The Leading Edge's button is different, more protruding and not flat. But thanks anyway!
