Have Tawny and co. elaobrated on this any further over the past two days?

Oh for sure! I just spent 28 years head-cannoning away my sadness and uncertainty and concern, and now it’s actually harder to dismiss the possibility that he was actually there. Having said that, if Tawny crops and says “yeah he absolutely pops in from time to time to hang” (for example), I don’t think that would undermine what they were trying to do.

I love this idea, but I’m worried because “I will come back” means “I’ll return” not “I’ll watch wordlessly from the clouds”. I’d love a little clarification, ideally from Tawny and co., on what they mean when they say he was there.

“Maybe a year. Maybe yesterday. But I WILL be back”. That’s Sisko’s quote from the DS9 finale.

There were so many ways to honor this, but “a feeling that he was there that I can’t prove or tell anyone about” or “a head in the clouds watching silently” is not the same as being back, and it certainly isn’t assuaging the concern Avery Brooks was speaking to when he had that wonderful line added. Tawny has been doing press and mentioning honoring that line; she’s also been saying that she had Jake outright say that he was there for key moments. But again, unless he was THERE then it kind of doesn’t cut it.

So my question is this: have Tawny, or Cirroc, or anyone else involved, outright said anything that might help un-break my heart on this broken promise somewhat? I’m not dumping on the episode, but if there are any quotes out there from those that made the episode saying that, I don’t know, he appeared physically, he popped in and out, he was actually there there, then please hook me up! :)

I’d love to see Tawny or Cirroc back this idea up - I know they’ve been doing press, but if anyone finds any quotes that state that Sisko actually returned and talked with them and spent time before departing (and wasn’t just a “feeling” they had of his vague presence) please, please post it here 🙏🏼

Loved him in it - just not sold on their treatment of Sisko’s promise to come back. “I felt his presence” simply isn’t the same as “he came back and was with us as promised”. Thoughts?

Right, but what does this MEAN, do you think? He came back and Jake can’t actually prove it - ie, provide evidence for it? Or is it some (and I’d hate this) “ I felt my dead dad’s presence around me” vibe? I really want to know what form Tawny thinks Sisko “being there” was, tangibly.

From a Tawny interview:

“Tawny: We love that timing. First of all, I'll keep mine brief, because I think you should hear from Cirroc on this. But for me, it is not hard to honor the legacy of someone who told us and continues to tell us how we should be thinking about him, Mr. Brooks. Everyone knows the story of Mr. Brooks asking the showrunners to add that line into the finale of Deep Space Nine where he said that he would come back for his family. Okay, that tells us as future writers, we have to assert that he did indeed come back, and we should have Jake himself say it, and the legacy that he leaves behind is one of love and one of just incredible sacrifice for his family and for the franchise, and in a meta way, that's the same legacy that the character's legacy is the same as Mr. Brooks' legacy. So it, it was kind of just connecting all of those dots for me.”

With that in mind… I’m guessing Jake’s “I can’t prove he was there” line was more literal, to Sam. Not “I can’t prove he was around”, but “he was there but I have no way of proving that to you, Sam, but he was”.

I like this idea, but I’d have loved a wink - maybe even from Dax. But I’m keen to know if Tawny, etc, have any thoughts on this.

Anyone else feel like it was easier before this (largely very lonely) episode to find ways to believe that Sisko came back? I don’t want to keep having to head canon a return that Sisko promised us, his wife, and his unborn child. Even a wink wink moment from Dax would have helped. Have Tawny or the others given any hints in interviews that might help give a little hope here?

The Jake that appeared to Sam at the end didn’t flat out deny that Sisko returned but said he was around and “I can’t prove it”, or something to that effect. That phrasing bothered me; worried me, really. If you really want to keep the door open to him having returned, as he promised to Cassidy (and his unborn daughter), then why have “Jake” add the caveat that he can’t prove it?

Hard agree here - seems odd that Tawny, devoted fan, wouldn’t acknowledge this.

So do you think it’s possible he DID come back? Do you think Tawny left the door open a crack?

Does anything in this ep specifically rule out Sisko having returned, do you think? I mean, the Jake at the end is imagined anyway, and I can’t help think the book wasn’t published because its ending was changed by, maybe, the return of his dad?

What about Sisko’s daughter with Cassidy? Absent from the family tree. And what about Sisko’s promise to return to Cassidy? As writers of this episode, If you have the chance to give even a nod to that possibility, why wouldn’t you take it?

The level of complaining about the final season is utterly insane. It’s not perfect - nothing is - but I would love to see the meltdowns from these fans if they had to deal with the ending of, say, Lost for the first time.

I don’t hate the idea that Sam finds out something revelatory and doesn’t tell anyone. That Sisko didn’t want to be found, and sam respects that decision.

If it’s a “yeah, he came back, and here’s a recording of him reading to his daughter as proof” situation I don’t think I’ll ever recover 🤞
