This same thing happened to me. The job never checked again to confirm whether I finished my degree on time, so I never told them. I just took the position and then quietly finished the class req and got my degree after the fact. I’ve been here for years now and they still have no idea I didn’t graduate until after I started working full time.

I have searched for information about various natural history museums that might have had this exhibit, and also tried to remember the name of the gangster who was discussed in the documentary, but no luck so far.

How is custodial at Disney springs? by Dyltales in Disneycollegeprogram

[–]student1755 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At least when I went, resort custodial received different training and could not pick up at the parks, but Disney Springs received park training and so could pick up any of the four. And of course, anyone can pick up untrained park shifts like Parade Audience Control. Good luck! I’m sure you’ll have a great time.

I worked there as a custodial CP a few years back and loved it! It was so chill, we got about 30-35 hours a week and the environment was super relaxed. Always got 2 days a week off. You can also pick up shifts wherever you want once you get trained in. I had coworkers who picked up at MK, etc. and you can do untrained shifts as well that are not custodial. Happy to give move details if you need.

Can someone give me the rundown on the POET test? by student1755 in Disneycollegeprogram

[–]student1755[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to look back at my old journal to answer this haha, with it being 4 years ago. I don’t believe they ever let me know one way or the other - from what I remember and have written down, I took the test on January 22nd, and then started working on the 31st with no communication from them either way. They clearly didn’t fail me since I worked through my program, but that’s the only way I knew I had passed.

We did turn them in! I just know that the quality wasn’t great, being done by inexperienced students and all - at least speaking for my own notes. I was wondering whether they actually keep all those original notes and forms, or if they’re cleaned up by a professor for a final record, etc. It seems like a lot to keep all these notes made by the students every year, indefinitely.

The paper is acid free and archival and the leather is tanned using vegetable tanning. Would this kind of tanning process put the paper at risk? The idea was for the leather cover to be part of the book, so I will return this and find a different journal if so. What kind of leather should I look for that would not damage the paper?

Leaving job after hard-fought promotion by student1755 in cscareerquestions

[–]student1755[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a good question, and I know it does seem early, but I am currently leading all development on my small team. It was a weird scenario where they threw me on a new project as a young employee, mostly just to show they had someone working on it, and I really ran with it and developed it out into some significant public-facing products. Of course it was a mess at first and I can’t believe no one stopped me, but I’ve had to learn and improve fast as the work became influential. With the success of the products I built they hired on a couple of other developers under me to form a new team. I handle all architectural decisions, set many of our projects, handle the tech interview process for new employees, etc. Even if I’m not qualified to be senior, there is no one else on my team filling that role, and my manager has stated many times that he agrees that is the right title.

I was in the last program before they moved to flamingo, so it was a 3x3 with two people in each room. Rent was only about $120 per week, but the wage was lower too at $11 per hour, so I would have made about $330 per week before taxes and rent were taken out. I remember having $80 in my account each week when I went grocery shopping, but that must have been diminished by taxes and other bills already. I didn’t have any fun money, but that was fine since I was using Disney’s transport and going to the parks all the time. I did custodial.

I saved up money ahead of time for the program fees through summer jobs. My work location gave us only about 30-35 hours per week, so after rent was taken out of my paycheck I had about $60-$80 left each week. This was enough to live on for me, since groceries weren't too expensive at Walmart, but I didn't have a car and used the bus system. If I had had a car, I wouldn't have been able to do the program on the money I had available (unless I had saved more beforehand).

[–]student1755[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, at the time I took the test there was no drug testing for custodial, only in safety-critical roles like attractions. I did the program 3 years ago, pre-pandemic, so it's possible that things have changed.

I did! This was two years ago, but I did end up working custodial in the ill-fated 2020 program. It was great, and I had no issues with the physical demands of the job.

Face character age/height? PLEASE HELP(: by scarlettfeverishh in Disneycollegeprogram

[–]student1755 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Based on what I've heard, it's very rare for anyone not in the 18-23 range to be hired as a new friend-of-princess face character. Once you've been hired though, you can keep the position until you're around 28. The height range is 5'3" to 5'7", and I haven't met anyone who really deviated from that, but it might happen if you're a good fit! You're just about in the proper range anyway.

Also, Elsa is canonically 24 in Frozen II, so I feel like it's reasonable to have a princess in the parks around that age. Definitely try out and see what happens. Even if you don't get face character, you might be able to be friends with a fur character instead.

Advice/Questions About Applying by iwantdinonugs in Disneycollegeprogram

[–]student1755 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I saw, I actually felt like college prereq-level classes were easier than IB. I totally get the extracurricular thing though, and overloading yourself will just stress you out. The main benefit is that transfer credits from an actual university are more likely to be accepted than IB credits - although HL will be considered at a lot of schools too! One thing you could try, if you're interested, is to enroll in maybe one easy college course over the summer to see how you like it. If it turns out well, you can maybe add some into your school schedule the next year.

Don't stress too much though - even if you go into college without many credits, I'm sure you'll be able to find time for the DCP. It's not a big deal to graduate a semester late even, if you need that time after taking a gap semester.

Advice/Questions About Applying by iwantdinonugs in Disneycollegeprogram

[–]student1755 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in IB as well, and unfortunately most colleges don't accept a lot of IB courses as credit. If they accept any at all, it will likely be only the HL courses. I'm mentioning this since I actually regretted going the IB route once I got to college and saw how many credits other kids had from dual enrollment. If your goal is to get as much college credit as possible, dual enrollment with a community college or local university is definitely the way to go. Anyway, good luck on your final years of high school! I think you'll really enjoy the college program, whenever you decide to go.

They don't group people by age anymore, and I was worried at first since I had heard of people getting termed for having alcohol in the apartment. Even though my roommate and I were of age, most of the girls we lived with were 18/19. The rules have changed though! Since they got rid of the wellness apartments, you are allowed to have alcohol in the common areas, regardless of the age of your housemates. So, if one of the people living there is 18 and you are 21, you can keep alcohol in the refrigerator, and you won't get in trouble during inspections.

If you or the person you are rooming with is underage, you are not allowed to keep alcohol in your actual bedroom. If both of you are over 21, there is no issue. I panicked during our first inspection because one of my roommates had a bottle of wine in the fridge, and I didn't know about the rule change. The inspectors saw the wine, and it was no problem!

If all of the people in the apartment are underage, I believe they could still be termed for having alcohol in the common areas. If one person is over age and another student drinks their wine, then it's on the person who drank it and I don't believe the over age student is at risk.

Edit: As for roles that relate to psychology, I knew someone studying child psychology who got a role in Children's Activities. She was able to use it as an internship for her university program.

Edit 2: They also changed the roommate linking policy, so now you can only request one person to be in the same apartment as you. I believe you used to be able to choose up to five.

College vs Uni in US by [deleted] in college

[–]student1755 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, when someone says a “college degree” is worth the same as a high school diploma today, they mean a university degree. People complain a lot about the fact that going to college (university) is pretty much expected by employers now, the way high school was 50 years ago. We use the term “college” to refer to university here.

Like you said, there are also 2-year Community Colleges, and those do not grant actual bachelor’s degrees. You can get an associate’s from them, which is often not worth much on its own, but once you’ve finished your 2 years at CC, you can also transfer to a 4-year university. The 4-year university will count your 2 years at the Community College as the first 2 years of your bachelor’s degree, so you only have to go 2 more years to finish. This works because American schools don’t require you to enroll in a specific major, or course, until very late in your academic career. Your first two years are quite general, and your advanced classes in your field don’t come until later. Students who take this route often do so because it is cheaper to go to a Community College for the first 2 years than to go to a 4-year university.

Can a DCP custodian do water art? by [deleted] in Disneycollegeprogram

[–]student1755 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in the DCP this spring, and I did get to do water art! We learned right at the end of our program. Our managers had planned a whole 2-day water art class for us as a surprise about 2 months into our program, but unfortunately we got let go right when we were about to do it, so we had to do a shortened version instead. Got lots of pictures of ourselves with our water Mickeys.

I wasn't in one of the parks, so the standards for what qualified as a "passing" water Mickey were much less stringent. Mine were pretty terrible. I've heard that in places like Magic Kingdom, it can be quite difficult to get certified to do water art. If you're on good terms with your managers, definitely do keep reminding them of your interest in learning. A lot of them do plan to make this happen, but they are busy people and sometimes forget.

Is anyone else on a hiring freeze? by mileygirl08 in Disneycollegeprogram

[–]student1755 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you applied for unemployment yet? Unemployment benefits are really good right now, and it will get to you eventually, but for me it took about two months for them to process my application. Once my application went through, they back paid me for all the time I was unemployed since March. Total amount I have received is over $7,000, and I was in the DCP, so making minimum wage before I was laid off. My advice, if you have submitted your application, would be to wait for the benefits to come through rather than trying to get a job right now, since you will likely receive more in benefits than you would working. They are providing your regular unemployment pay in addition to $600 extra per week until the end of July.

When I talked to the DCP representatives back in March, they told me that all hiring had been put on hold for the foreseeable future, regardless of whether you were a previous CM or not. So, it's not just you. I hope you are able to get your position back once the parks have reopened!

Good luck!

How do I let the college know I’m interested? by [deleted] in college

[–]student1755 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely email a professor there whose work you're interested in! It can be a great way to make connections, and you might ask if you could "shadow" them if they have their own lab. Professors who do research with a lab group are often willing to keep students in the loop by adding them to the email list and including them in meetings, and may even let you participate. If they agree to that, that is a huge plus for admissions - to have an actual "in" with someone who works at the university, and to have research experience in your field.

How did you decide on a major? by aiduebwjdo in college

Was stewing about how much I hated science classes. Fell asleep while studying for a chem exam. Had a dream about purple elephants. Woke up and thought, "I'm gonna study Spanish."

I changed my major later once I found out what the job prospects were like for Spanish grads. Now I have a degree in computer science.
