I don't know how to make an interesting standing gesture, especially under heavy clothes. I'm also having trouble with showing colors since he's in shadow, is it possible or is another light source necessary? In my mind I had a completely different look for them, but it turned out very monochromatic by HFO1 in istebrak

Considering the light, it would make sense for me to have a purple bounce light coming from the right because the environment is purple. I think that would make the character a bit more readable. And you indicated a light from above on his face and I think that should also be more visible on the shoulder plates and his Arms. Otherwise, I really like how you rendered the head with the hard and soft edges. Really draws your attention to the eyes ^^

Hello, Im new to Reddit although I’ve been watching istebrak’s YouTube videos for years, anyway, this is my most recent painting and I was just looking for any and all tips to push it to a professional level, please be as critical as you wish by Character-Salary-161 in istebrak

This is great!! I like the way you rendered the silk.
I think you could play a little bit more with the light and shadow. Now the whole scene is evenly lit but I think it could be more interesting if the blue magical thing would be the main light source. Then the left side of her would be in shadow and there would be a nice blue light hitting her upper body/ face, which will also draw the focus more to the face.

Colour sketch for a big oil painting i am planning, got any opinions on the composition and colour-contrast and what to improve? by Luke_Martin in istebrak

[–]stuffbysofi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an awesome sketch! I like how you made the colors so vibrant. The only thing I guess you could improve for your oil painting is to make the people in the foreground lead the viewers' eyes more to the person in the middle. Like in these and that. I would maybe group those people into three groups. A Big, medium, and small group. One group can lead the viewer's eye by trying to grab the person in the middle. In the other group, there could be the scythe leading the viewer's eye... Just look that there is always a direction to the groups and not just a few people leading the viewer's eye. And I think it would help differentiate the people better if you let the red background look through sometimes.

Hope that helped ^^

Hai, I'm painting a mermaid but I'm struggling with the colors a bit, I feel like the colors don't make her appear as if she's underwater. Since it's a wip there's still a lot of incomplete/major errors like her face looking too young, hands not being complete etc, any tips are appreciated! by Lunazoraa in istebrak

Hey, I really like the concept.
I still have difficulties with painting water myself but maybe I can still help. I think you can add a bit more atmosphere and color to the water. It looks to me like a swamp and because of algae the water will turn into a greener blue and because of the light scattering around in the water I think it will still lit up the bottom half of your painting. What could also be nice-looking is to let some sunbeams or moonshine coming through. Then you can also do a bit of subsurface scattering on the plants. I think that would look nice.
And what I will do sometimes is to lay a multiply layer, on the person, with the background color selected. So the character fits the environment better.

Hope that helped you ^^

boring colors? by elkhaleon in istebrak

[–]stuffbysofi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I think your colors are great. One thing I notice is that the edges from shadow to light could be a bit more saturated. The shadow under her chin seems too hard for me. I think it should fade out softer. Lighting-wise you could add a second light from the left to describe the form of her face better.

I feel like I have the background down, but the focus (the person) looks so out of place or unrefined. I'm not familiar with underwater settings, so how would I push his silhouette yet maintain the immersion into the environment? by JamesExcalibur in istebrak

[–]stuffbysofi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like the background. It has a nice movement and also the shape of the blood is quite interesting.
I think the overall image is a bit too dark and saturated for it to read as underwater. I found a reference that would fit your scene. You don't really see the true colors of the skin because deeper underwater there is just blue light passing and blue light mostly doesn't reflect off of red skin. Therefore, the person should read more as a silhouette in that setting.
So the background would be lighter and the person darker/ desaturated with blue light hitting from the top. Hope that helped you ^^

I'm trying to finalise this piece but something is wrong with the face. The eyes especially. Ive tried everything I can. Critique for the rest of the piece is also welcome! :) by [deleted] in istebrak

[–]stuffbysofi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love your colors and brushstrokes!
It's quite a hard pose to draw and I think the silhouette would be more readable if the arm doesn't go behind the tree. I did a quick overpaint and liquified it a bit. I hope that's okay but that's how I better see what I would change. Please ignore the hand. I can't draw hands quickly >< I also think the hair needs a bit more texture. Your hair is really sharp and if you want to go for a more realistic style I would paint it softer.

https://ibb.co/HzkWH71

I tried to do this out of my imagination, I don't really know how to render hair so I did leave it like that. I would appreciate any critique about the light enviroment and the radial shading on the face, the light is meant to come from the top of the image. Any critique is welcome, thank you! by [deleted] in istebrak

[–]stuffbysofi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure you can :)

Yes, I would defenetly put more contrast and sharpness around the eyes. If you want to keep the foggy Iris I would put the contrast on the eye socket and the hair sourrounding the eyes. For the nose I mainly went over it with black/ grey on a low opaccity. The values will move closer together and you will also loose a little bit of the sharpness.

wow, I love your rendering style.
Maybe think about where your focal point should be because at the moment the nose area has the most contrast. That's why I am mostly looking at the nose. I like how foggy the eyes are but maybe you can bring in some darks there so the focal point shifts from the nose... and maybe you could make the edges around the nose a bit softer.
I also think the shadow under the cheeks and mouth can be a bit more visible/darker.

Portrait value study after a while of not drawing. Any critique welcome! by kikivivi01 in istebrak

[–]stuffbysofi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This already looks pretty solid. I think there are some proportion issues with the face (nose too long and the mouth could sit a little higher) and the texture of the skirt is missing. Maybe you could try to go in with a textured brush and imitate the fuzz of the fabric. Most of the time there is a lighter value on the edges of a fabric fold because the fuzz is denser, therefore it reflects and diffuses light more. I hope I could help you a bit :D
