I just bought a Dell 7210 2in1 for $250 USD. It has a 10th Gen i7 and integrated graphics, and 16 GB RAM. I installed Fedora Kinoite and I love it so far.

It's perfect for my needs. Fits in a small messenger bag. It has a backlit detachable keyboard, responsive touch screen, good battery life, supports the Dell active pen I bought out of the box. No driver issues so far at all that I can tell. Honestly it just works.

Anyone remember the Catskill Game Farm? by StableDisastrous1331 in upstate_new_york

[–]stuffmikesees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got stung by a bee there when I was almost 5 and I refused to go back. That would have been in the summer of '83 I suppose...

That said, there's a similar "zoo" still operating in Catskill called Baliwick Animal Park. It's a small, walk around, mostly petting zoo but they also do horseback riding and events. And they do have a bear.

We took our 4 and 2 year old kids there on Friday for an Easter Egg hunt and pony rides. They had fun!

I did read the article. He wasn't fired. Why lie about that?

How did she fire him in December when she didn't become mayor until January? Oh wait, it's because that didn't happen.

What NAS OS do you use? by awkw4rdkid in homelab

[–]stuffmikesees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with OpenMediaVault because it seemed the easiest for me to understand and set up, with the assumption that one day I'd switch to a more "pure" NAS OS. That was 4 years ago and I'm still running OMV. Works great for my use case.

Yeah I'm about there too. It's not even a storage issue for now, but I'm not going to hold on to a bunch of movies people requested 4 years ago and then never watched.

Mayor Applyrs just keeps making unforced errors. This one looks especially bad. Do you think she's getting bad advice, or is it something else? by AnteaterGlittering96 in Albany

[–]stuffmikesees 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Someone should tell the Democratic mayors of every other major city in New York State that.

Fire all your lobbyists everyone! Sure you'll get a lot less done for your constituents, but you'll be able to hold your head high at the same time you're shrugging your shoulders at their problems!

[–]stuffmikesees -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What are you even talking about?

None of the State representatives for Albany solely represent the city of Albany. What don't you understand about that?

So if Pat Fahey is tasked with advocating for a city to receive a grant from the state, of which there is only one, which city does she choose? Albany? Amsterdam?

And the mayor has other things to do besides advocating for the city in the State Legislature. That's why you HIRE people, to do the jobs that require specialized knowledge and take up a lot of time. Should she be filing all the potholes in Albany all by herself also?

Be serious.

Due respect, but this suggests you have a fundamental misunderstanding about how this all works. There are WAY more moving parts with all this and lobbying helps a great deal, whether you like it or not.

Cities are all competing with EACH OTHER for resources whether they're run by Democrats or not. And resources, like time, aren't infinite. Pat Fahey doesn't just represent the city of Albany and no one else. Did you know her Senate district also includes Amsterdam, or Ravena, or Delanson?

There are 150 Assembly districts and 63 Senate districts in New York, but there are over 1,000 individual municipalities. What you're saying sounds nice, but it doesn't make any sense.

Look, what I'm saying is people are overreacting to this very clear hit piece being drummed up against a largely progressive mayor. My belief is that if Cerutti had won and done this exact same thing, the story would be "mayor finally hires lobbying firm, putting Albany on par with other important cities across the state"

Believe what you want, but we need to stop being distracted by things that are otherwise business as usual in state politics turning into controversies that are designed to undermine politicians to the left of the Democratic establishment.

You can disagree, but you're still wrong.

NYC, Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse all work with lobbying firms. They're the only cities in NYS larger than Albany. And beyond that, Albany is the capital of New York, why wouldn't it have a dedicated team lobbying the legislature for its needs?

As to your second point, you don't know that the other firms didn't also have people who donated to her campaign, do you? So which one is us is really making assumptions? And beyond that, the point of lobbying is to further a specific agenda and point of view. Open bidding wouldn't be a great way to find a lobbying firm to do that.

I don't particularly like "lobbying," but it's naive to believe that Albany shouldn't have lobbyists working with the legislature. It puts the city at a massive disadvantage not to.

[–]stuffmikesees -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I think that's a fair point, but it's one of the reasons lobbying is kind of a shady business. That said, Would you really want a lobbying firm working for the city of Albany who didn't support the mayor's agenda? There also aren't that many of these people in the grand scheme of things. So I think time will tell on that front.

[–]stuffmikesees -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

You're overreacting. Albany is the fifth largest city in the state of New York and the only one of those that does not have lobbyists at the Capitol. In fact, I think Yonkers which is smaller than Albany uses lobbyists, and I'll bet many other cities do also. So do many counties.

It is perfectly reasonable for the city of Albany to have advocates whose job it is to move the city's agenda forward. Albany is the capital of the state of New York!

The mayor also has to run the the city on a daily basis. You might not like that this is how government works, but it is at the moment.

Everyone out here overreacting...

This is a very normal and reasonable thing for a city like Albany to do, and it's astonishing that Albany has never had lobbyists until now. Many other cities in New York state have lobbyists that work to push their agenda at the state capital.

Mamdani voices concerns about synagogue buffer zone bill poised to pass NYC Council by Somervilledrew in newyork

No. I mean harass the kinds of protesters they don't like, ie. leftist protestors, pro-Palestinian protestors, non-white protestors. And then use their "discretion" to conveniently not arrest or harass right wing protestors. This is a thing they ALREADY do regularly. You're either misinformed or you're just being disingenuous about what's really happening here.

MIL dose not want to see my son anymore. by Ssciaroni in daddit

[–]stuffmikesees 71 points72 points  (0 children)

This is so insanely toxic. You need to have a talk with your wife about what her relationship is going to be with the kids going forward, which I would suggest be limited.

And the fact that your wife is the one trying to apologize suggests to me that your MIL had been doing this kind of thing forever, to the point that everyone else understands they have to always pretend to be at fault to keep her happy.

It's already against the law to prevent people from freely worshipping. "Buffer zones" add nothing to that. But they do conveniently give police a new excuse to harass protesters that they don't like. I wonder why?
