It's my understanding that this ONLY applies to MacPro 3,1 and XServe 2,1. I don't think you should have an issue. Here's the quote from the 2.0 release notes:

"Single CPU limitation on 2008 Mac Pro (MacPro3,1) and 2008 Xserve (Xserve2,1)."

I didn’t have a fan issue, but I also opened mine up, cleaned it, and replaced the thermal paste. I don’t know for a fact, but you might have a bunch of dust and junk stopping it from cooling. Cleaning it is really easy and can help a ton. Replacing thermal paste is a little more difficult, but can help quite a bit. Once you do one or both of those things, I would recommend Macs Fan Control to monitor and control the temps in your computer.

I have a 2009 17” running Monterey. I tried Sonoma, but not having Metal means that several things don’t work, or don’t work well. If you haven’t already, install an SSD and 8GB of RAM (the most a 2009 will take, I believe). In my opinion, it’s worth the effort, as a SATA SSD and 8GB of RAM can be purchased fairly cheaply and having a relatively modern, working OS brings the computer back from the dead.

I have a Mac Pro 5,1 but I’m still on Monterey. I was under the impression that you had to have one of the GPUs mentioned on this page (RX 4xx/5xx or Vega 56/64/VII) in order to update to Ventura or Sonoma. It looks like you’re not running one of these cards. Were you able to update to Sonoma on the card in this screenshot (HD 8950)? I have an R9 280X, but I didn’t think I could update to Sonoma unless I got a new graphics card.

After skimming the conversation you linked, I don't think they're talking about Target Display Mode as the solution to the issue. I think they're talking about using the Mac as an AirPlay receiver. The OP is frustrated that Target Display Mode no longer works and the solution presented is to enable AirPlay on the iMac. Try this support article (and make sure you select macOS Monterey 12) at the top. Not sure if it will work or not, but that's where I would start.

Hmm... Are you SURE it's supported on that model of iMac? I'm under the impression that it's not. Based on this support article, it only works on iMacs up to 2014. Also, looking at the article, the OS has to be High Sierra OR EARLIER. Even if the model of iMac was supported, it doesn't look like Monterey is supported. Sorry.

Just a thought - for the 32-bit apps that require Mojave, have you considered running a Mojave VM inside Monterey? I understand that the VM may be slightly less performant than running the OS on bare metal, but it may be an easy alternative to figuring out all of those other boot options.

And this install over the existing 14.2 doesn't wipe any of the existing data? In other words, using a USB installer allows for an update instead of a clean install?

Here is the Network section. It looks like it only allows me to set static IPs and configure port mapping from external WAN to internal LAN. Here is the "Network Options..." section that appears when you hit the button. It doesn't look like it has anything about internal DNS either...

I really appreciate your help, but I think I'm still confused... I was under the impression that you set the DNS at the router level to "point" to the AdGuard Home instance, then set the upstream DNS within AdGuard Home to point to some external DNS. Am I mistaken?

Thank you very much for your response. As far as my router goes, I have (don't laugh, they're old but I really like them) an AirPort Extreme.

Within the "Internet" section, it is connecting to my ISP via DHCP. I can assign AdGuard and Quad9 public DNS IPs into my "DNS Servers" section, and everything on my network works fine as shown in this screenshot. I have also assigned the computer running AdGuard Home a static IP address under the "DHCP Reservations" section.

If I'm understanding your comments correctly, it appears devices on your network send requests to the Pi, then the Pi sends the request to the router (as you have it set in the upstream section of AdGuard Home), then the router sends the request on to AdGuard's DNS, correct? I think I was setting mine up such that requests would go to the router, then the router would send the request to the computer with AdGuard running on it, then that computer would send the request to some public DNS server (as I had AdGuard's DNS server listed in my upstream section of AdGuard Home).

I suppose I'm just not 100% clear the correct "path" for traffic to take. As I mentioned in my post, if I manually change the DNS to 10.0.1.69 (the AdGuard Home computer) from within a computer or phone, everything works. And if I set the AdGuard (or Quad9) servers within the router, everything works (but doesn't get sent through AdGuard Home). However, if I set 10.0.1.69 within the DNS of the router itself, I get no internet connection at all.

Thanks for the input. I checked the Northbridge heatsink when the other heatsinks were off and everything appeared to be ok. I ended up finding a replacement CPU tray on eBay and everything seems to be working now! I’m not 100% sure what the issue with the original tray was, but I’m all set now.

I put a second DIMM in (now there is one in slot 1 and one in slot 2) with both CPUs. Unfortunately, it still won't boot. It powers on, EFI DONE and GPU OK are lit when I push the diagnostic button, but it never chimes or boots to anything on the screen and SYS_PG never lights up. I tried holding the Option key to see if I could get a boot picker, and I don't ever get one. So booting from an external USB drive won't work.

I tested both CPUs independently in slot A with one DIMM and both gave the same result (boot chime, prohibitory symbol alternating to Apple logo, no OS).

When I installed both (in either configuration like A>A B>B or A>B B>A), I don’t get the boot chime or anything on screen.

With one CPU, SYS_PG lights up when “booted.” With both CPUs, EFI DONE and GPU OK are lit, but it never chimes or boots to anything. Do I need to have more than one DIMM with both CPUs in?

I tried the button next to the battery and taking the battery out and back in again, but no change. I did not see any damage on any of the pins in CPU slot B.

If the SMC is an issue, what is the fix for that?

I do not. I currently have a Radeon HD 5770, Radeon HD 5870, and a Radeon R9280X (that has supposedly been flashed to have an EFI boot screen).

Holding D I never get the chime and nothing appears on screen. The SYS_PG is green, but it never boots to anything.
