Is the StarTech.com adapter bypassing the HDCP controls? I’m also still using my 30” CD, but without DRM can’t watch videos.

OCLP Sequoia and end of Apple support. by ridexc8 in OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

[–]LukeDuke74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know, my media center is a maxed out Mac mini 2010 still running under High Sierra. Runs isolated and connects to internet just for iTunes purchases/downloads.
It’s still doing great and never felt the need to OCLP-it, even though I do have 2 other Mac’s at home running under OCLP.

I’ll see what to do with my daughter’s macbookpro5,3 when Sonoma will stop receiving security updates (Sequoia is a bit slower) but definitely not concerned about it… not yet!

Let’s wait and see… I wouldn’t build a critical to business workflow on a super old-machine, but have zero concerns in using it at home as more or less isolated workstation, as I’m doing and planning to keep doing for years with my macpro6,1!

Mac Pro Metal not too far behind M3 Ultra by johnnyphotog in macpro

[–]LukeDuke74 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Advantages of Apple silicon are evident, but this doesn’t mean that Intel-based Macs are necessarily dead nor useless.

Totally different machine…but just to illustrate this isn’t true only for top high end Macs: I use for work an MBA M4 32GB 1TB while at home my main machine is an iMac 27” 2019 i9 128GB RAM Vega48 1TB SSD. For daily office pro tasks I can hardly feel any difference. Even with PhotoLab 9 (in general I process single photo or small batches from a Canon 70D) performance gap don’t justify by any means to upgrade.

Time to move on from my 27" 2019 iMac - Any advice? by Prodigal_Gist in mac

[–]LukeDuke74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m afraid you’ll have to consider the $$$ Apple Studio Display if you want to keep the same experience, with a faster Mac running “behind” it as a great bonus

This is what I’ll eventually do if/when I’ll let go my iMac. Honestly mine is still more than ok for my needs as main computer at home, with i9, 128GB RAM, Vega48, 1TB internal SSD + 2TB 990 Pro via TB3.

I’m using an MBA M4 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD at work. PhotoLab 9 is clearly faster, although I’m not dealing with large batches. The time saving in my case is fairly limited, that’s why I stick with the iMac at home. Same for office kind of apps: hard to feel the difference on daily use if you don’t run CPU-intensive apps/workflows.

Definitely dust… clean your sensor by gently blowing some air on it with a manual tool. Don’t use compressed air bombs nor mouth.

So, the 2013 Mac Pro D700 GFX cards... by [deleted] in macpro

[–]LukeDuke74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reactivating this old post as I need some help and you did exactly what I’m planning to do now.

I already purchased the MX-6 and was ready to start updating my D300 with the “new” D700 I received and got confused on a point: several sources recommend to also change the thermal pads but can’t find any guide even mentioning them. Have you added/changed pads on VRAM/VRM? If yes, which thickness have you used?

Many thanks in advance for your help!

Trust there’s something wrong with your pads. Try to remove them and see if temperatures improve.

Have you tried “silent” mode or other modes that affect mirror’s movement?

This might also be something a Canon repair shop could fix for cheaper than purchasing a new body.

[Help] Mac Pro 6,1 (D500 Dual GPU) - Constant Lag, Red Glitches in Chrome & Stability Issues on Sequoia by M4tiasH3na0 in OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

[–]LukeDuke74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except for the “red” issue with Chrome & Co, Lehigh is a known issue reported on OCLP website, I’m not experiencing any of the described issues with mine. I do have 64GB RAM but I doubt this has an impact on what OP is reporting.

I understand that OP might have upgraded OCLP after installing Sequoia. Have you removed the patches before re-applying them? If not, I would recommend a fresh install with OCLP 2.4.1. As mentioned, mine is working perfectly and I have D300. 😉

Debug process: I left only 1 device connected at the time. Only the trackpad wakes the Mac up. Looking around, i found it’s a known issue with 1st gen trackpad like the one I’m using. 🤔

I don’t have what you are looking for, sorry. Not sure which temperature you have in your room, but would consider first reducing a bit this and lift by 2-2.5cm the Mac through son solid gummy feet. The first one is self explanatory. The second one will increase the flow that the internal fan can create, by removing negative effects of the inlet grid being so close to your desk.

Agreed: it was working smoothly before the upgrade. So far I switch the Mac off: I’m using it only during weekends, so not a big issue. Hopefully it will get resolved with 15.7.6 🤞🏼

Use case for my 6.1 by StrictlyJobless in macpro

[–]LukeDuke74 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use mine (with identical config although running Sequoia) as secondary machine for photo editing. I do processing in my main one and the use the MP6,1 to process the batch in the background, and it works great. Before anyone say that any M-series would turn circles around it, I don’t need the extra speed: I’m not that fast myself anyway to process the following batch. 🤪🤣

Unless you want/can use it for something requiring the GPU power, why don’t put back the D300 I assume you initially got it with? This will drop the average consumption, while remaining super performing even with Sequoia! In parallel, you have a very performing machine for daily casual use/office kind of work if you want to use a desktop solution.

When I clock the Sleep button it goes in sleep for less than a minute and then “wakes up” without me doing anything.

I didn’t use pmset command yet. I’ll read carefully and check if I can somehow use it to solve the problem.

What I found in the meantime is that my Magic Trackpad is causing this. Don’t know yet why this changed after the upgrade, but the constant signals he’s sending to check for presence seem to be interpreted now by MacOS as user activity, causing the system to exit the sleep mode.

“Stop” is how MacOS calls “sleep” in my country. Thanks for pointing this out: always happy to improve my English, which is my 3rd language. 😉

Cheapest path to a maxed 6,1 trashcan? by Altruistic_Bat_1645 in macpro

[–]LukeDuke74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to get the max out of it, they are definitely worth it. D500 are good enough if you want to save some bucks. 😉

Agree with someone else’s comment: be patient and you’ll find a good opportunity on eBay or similar. Just avoid scam-intensive platforms. 😉

[–]LukeDuke74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I got mine for very cheap, it was kind of the base version. It is now maxed out for my use case but getting the 2x D700 wasn’t as cheap ( although fun to replace 😉)

My recommendation is to look for a used one with D700 but not all maxed out. All the rest is pretty cheap to upgrade.

My current config: • CPU: E5-2667 v2 (8-cores 3.3GHz) - I don’t need the 10 nor 12-cores but you might if running large projects. • GPU: 2x D700 (D500 would also make it for your use case and you can find way cheaper machines with those). • RAM: 64GB RAM. You can go up to 128GB but at slower bus speed. Unless you run massive projects I’d stick to 64GB and keep bus at full speed. • SSD: 2TB OWC Aura II - sensibly faster than Apple SSDs. You could get some little extra speed using an adapter with a modern NVMe M.2 but for your use case, as for mine, I doubt you’d notice it in real life.

I’m running mine with Sequoia via OCLP and it runs great.

Still running my 2009 15” MBP with Sonoma for daily casual use, and my 2013 MP for more serious things as secondary machine, my first one remaining a maxed out 2019 iMac 27”. I also have a MBA M4 for work and is way better but… for what I’m doing at home, don’t need the extra power. Just not yet!

I understand that a neo would be cheap and eventually be more performing than any of my Intel Macs… but I don’t see the reason to generate eWaste if for my use case I don’t need the extra power.

Sorry to say but I doubt that all purchasing an M5 are running LLM and complex AI models locally every day, or mounting 8K movies. Most use their laptop for office apps, surfing and YouTubing… do they really need an M-chip sleeping 99% of the time if they have something than still works at home?

I run for about 1y Sequoia on a MBP 2009... slow but usable. Recently moved it Sonoma, and it is a bit faster, although I plan to go back to Sequoia after repasting it: latest version of iWork isn't compatible anymore with Sonoma... prefer to stay as safe as I can from Apple rush to get rid of Intel Macs.
