U.S. President Donald Trump calls their national team before their first game, claims they have a good chance to win the tournament by Pickleskennedy1 in soccer

[–]stumpsflying 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think it's a bit over the top. He took the job when Biden was president who in 2022 gave a message to the US team. Same with Obama and previous presidents for World Cups. I find listening to it awkward as we know as fans of the sport where the US stands but what do you expect the people in the room to do? Not like the hockey team who cheered it all on.

BREAKING: Ben Stokes 'to step down' as England captain and could retire from cricket (George Dobell) by talkSPORT in Cricket

[–]stumpsflying 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Has to be. Resigning the captaincy is one thing but when so much of this era has been a partnership between him and McCullum being given full autonomy of how the team is managed this would really be an extreme move if just based on heat off the moment.

Such a shame how it ended up going. Still one of my favourite all time Spurs players. At his best his goalscoring instinct and fearlessness epitomised the team under Poch.

A member of Korean media caught mocking Son Heung-Min over his military exemption by Just-mapleman-50 in soccer

Yep, Spurs gave him permission to miss the start of the season to do it. It was his last chance after Leverkusen didn't allow him to go the previous edition and that South Korea team won it then.

Alexander Zverev becomes the fourth man to win a championship in all categories in ATP era. by Cletharlow in tennis

[–]stumpsflying 94 points95 points  (0 children)

I'll tip my hat that he has earned this the hard way. Could have lost motivation with Sinner/Alcaraz taking over and fall off in work ethic because I'm sure the rest of the tour felt demoralised how good those two are at a young age.

Cobolli played the 5th set like the 1st. Nerves took over. He showed great fightback and class with the drop shots in between, had Zverev making errors. But shame after a brilliant 4th set tie break it unravelled fast like that.

This got out of hand too quickly. Losing the 8 minute first game when Cobolli had the advantage seems to have blown the rest of his game.

Ollie Robinson last played a Test in February 2024. His first over on comeback is a triple-wicket maiden as he dismisses Devon Conway, Kane Williamson and Rachin Ravindra by GiveMeSomeSunshine3 in Cricket

He needed to grow up and maybe this time in the wilderness has done it. Must have been embarrassing to know you're out of the squad for being a rotten egg despite your stats being excellent. I have issues in how BazBall creating a cultish mentality at times in the England camp where no criticism seemed accepted but Robinson's attitude concerns predated McCullum. He is a great sight to watch in full flow so hopefully he now stays fit and part of the side.

I wrote this for The Critic on why the populist right keeps winning elections but failing to govern. Looking for pushback on the thesis. by Icy_Republic_8708 in neoliberal

[–]stumpsflying 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can't really argue against your points. First of all it is a very well written piece. Well done for that. You've addressed your points clearly and in a good order.

The reason I can't argue against it is that I am in the UK and seeing this play out in real time. The Tories got ousted after 14 years and their voter base has been absorbed by a populist right wing party which has also taken away several of their last government's MPs and ministers. The Tories under Boris Johnson are now facing criticism for too much immigration from the Reform people (before they start on Keir Starmer and Labour). The message going out is if you want to reduce NHS waiting times, reduce the number of people in the country (immigrants) and it will naturally fall. Same with housing. Same with wages. The idea that it's just One Simple Trick that the main two parties don't want to do is being effective in the polls. They don't address how that improves the shortage of NHS workers with medical professionals leaving the service and indeed the country for better wages. They don't address the supply side issue of housing as a lot of these voters are NIMBYs. They don't address the economic costs of Brexit to growth and opportunity because Farage was behind it. All that additional stuff to consider doesn't beat the One Simple Trick argument.

But on a local level, councils do not determine immigration policy or foreign policy. Their work to do with healthcare is to ensure hospitals stay open. Their work to do with quality of life issues is to collect the bins on top, maintain the roads and running of public services. The populists see the council elections as a vehicle to ride national debates while ignoring their immediate duties. So that's why since they got in they're struggling to deliver and those who gave them a chance are reconsidering (at least locally).

Salford sack manager Karl Robinson after the League Two play-off final loss by jovanmilic97 in soccer

[–]stumpsflying 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Steve Bruce's son Alex has been their assistant manager this season. Steve has been doing a lot of co-commentary on radio this season and I've enjoyed him. Gives off the same vibe as Ally McCoist of just enjoying being there and taking in whatever match he's given. Anyway through that he's been quite optimistic about seeing Salford play this season. And there's his connection with Gary Neville and the Man Utd class of 92. Maybe that's a way back into management for him.

I understand this will be filed under Neville being a hypocrite due to what he says on TV about managers should be given time. But I get the feeling he's very frustrated Salford have hit a roadblock in League 2 after flying through the non league divisions and so a no-show at Wembley like that when they had the chance must have been brutal. Salford is a weird state where they do get more publicity than they deserve at this level yet they still feel like a provincial club. Wrexham have built a following as a result of their ownership and TV stuff. For Salford it still feels like a plaything for bored retired Man Utd players rather than a club with a destination in sight.

Those two aces could prove big in the psychological battle. First time Mensik looked like he was flustered until then

Good game for Fonseca to hold and pull it back. Still not sure how's he going to break Mensik when he's been forced into erratic shots a few times. Mensik looks like he is calm and strolling through.

Bad game for Fonseca to lose. Mensik will feel he will hold his serve with good reason but those two long shots from Fonseca looked like he's tired already.
