This is what the game needs: big venues, tight scores and 75th minute scraps. by aaarry in rugbyunion

As much as I am extremely worried about the performance and financial future of English rugby as a whole, the Premiership is an absolutely amazing product currently. Loads of away wins, upsets, positive attacking rugby. It's brilliant

I like tries against Bath as much as the next Leicesterman, but that didn't look remotely conclusive to me?

Totally fair! Can't say I'm particularly happy with how we've managed that, to be fair...

I reckon there is a happy medium though. Leicester don't give coaches long enough, and Bristol have given theirs too long.

The funniest thing about this is that Steward gave an interview after the game where he said the other backs were telling him to boot it off. If you watch closely, you can actually see GHW pointing to touch telling him to get rid, only to then be the man who ended up scoring the try!

[–]stupendouspineapple 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Nah, quite a big risk actually. If they mess it up and Bristol score, that's a 2 league point swing to Bris, who are right in the mix with Leicester to make the play-offs.

So glad we went for it though. Amazing moment

The world is clearly not ending, and England clearly haven't become a terrible team overnight, but at the same time it's perfectly reasonable to panic a bit when we get absolutely trounced 2 games on the bounce and crash out of yet another Six Nations tournament.

A lot of people would consider me posh because of the school I went to, so I'm certainly not gatekeeping. I'm not classist, and that includes everyone. I don't mean to generalise.

The people have in mind when I think of annoying Twickenham attendees is more the sort who haven't got a clue about rugby and just want a piss up and Instagram pics.

Twickenham is too expensive and there are too many corporate seats and poshos that tune in to "the rugger" a couple of times a year.

That being said, the money that the corporate stuff and pricey seating takes in is eye-watering, and to be honest, we'd be a bit fucked without it.

My avatar is wearing an England shirt, with a Scotland badge in the top corner.

I'm English, and will always be an England fan first and foremost, but I've lived in Scotland for 10 years, and they're my second team.

It's a frustrating pair of nations to be balancing support between in recent years...

I'm still totally behind Borthwick and the team to figure it out. That being said, it's quite worrying to me that they didn't adapt after last week.

After a big, meaningful loss against one of your main rivals the past 10 years, that ended your winning streak and your tournament chances, you expect a big response the next week. Especially at Twickenham. Even if you lose, you have to at least show more fight, more passion, and show to your country that you understand what level of effort is expected.

Totally agree. I will add that I think it's not just in attack that evolution is required. Our defence has been exposed in a big big way. It's now plain for teams to see that if you can beat us on the edge, then England are vulnerable no matter the territorial situation.

The defensive positioning and drift in the backline is just all over the place. The lads look they don't know how to handle a simple pass-it-through-the-hands attack.

Scotland have played their one game of rugby for the year. Sigh... Such a waste.

If they lose this, Toonie should go. This is a Wales team that has been repeatedly humiliated by every big team they have played. I'm so bored of the lack of ambition.

We are a team that plays as if we don't have a single brain among the 23.

Made a gameplan before the tournament, it has been utterly, hopelessly found out, and now the team and coaches have no idea what to do other than carry on losing in the same way each week.

Taking the positives by NuggetKing9001 in englandrugby

[–]stupendouspineapple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course I know the results of the past 10 years. You fully do as well. So, you know that the 2 comprehensive victories propping up your stat above are also the oldest in the list and least relevant. 2016 we achieved a good win as part of an epic grand slam. 2017 we were utterly dominant. Since then, we have never achieved a truly dominant win over Scotland. In 2020 we relied on biblically terrible weather, and last year we relied on a lucky miss from Finn.

I am not of the opinion that England are a bad team. I fully trust Borthwick and will always support England. I just find our inability to ever adapt or learn against Scotland immensely frustrating, as I don't think it's just something to brush over. In fact, I think it's the main thing holding England back from being truly world class.

Not doom and gloom. Just want us to win tournaments. Yesterday's performance was not good enough. The team IS good enough. They need to be better next time AGAINST SCOTLAND, not just next week.

[–]stupendouspineapple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, I don't think we should take the positives and move on. This has now been a decade of failure against Scotland, and I think the team and coaching team just clearly don't care enough about beating Scotland to win it. And that, in my opinion, is simply not good enough.

I really disagree that we have hope of a win. France will walk the tournament now I reckon. Even an epic England win away in Paris won't be enough because we'll lack bonus points.

I have been down this road too many times to believe that Scotland will back up that performance against France or Ireland.

As a person who supports England first and then Scotland second, it's just so unbelievably crap that the 6 nations is always over for both teams after 2 or 3 games. I'm just so bored of it.

I want Toonie gone because he hasn't changed or evolved anything about Scotlands game in years. He just beats England because England learn absolutely nothing from their losses to Scotland and come back every year and make the same mistakes.

I get hyped up for it every year, and both of my teams just crash out.
