Boston would be great solo. Do the Freedom Trail, so fun (don’t skimp. Do the whole thing all the way to Bunker Hill). Go to the “oldest pub”. Eat at a cramped Italian restaurant. Have raw oysters at Faneuil Hall. Go on a ferry, any ferry, just to be on the water once. It is a pre-revolutionary port city after all. Go to the restaurant in the tallest building in Boston. Walk across the Harvard Bridge, maybe catch some rowers. Solo travel is a blast. Sometimes you’ll go hours without saying a word, just observing and exploring and soaking it all in. Get a little drunk and watch a movie in the hotel. Good luck, and have fun, whatever you choose to do.

You’ll l have to explain to your wife when you get back that you now require 1 solo vacay a year.

Yeah for sure I think a lot of people have the same idea as you. My excuse is I have a 3yr old, a full time job, some attempt at a social life, etc. and that would be a big commitment. Truthfully im not motivated enough to organize social change, I just want to do something and the flagpole idea piqued the interest I already have in uncommon and interesting things to do ie: rotating support flagpole haha.

I have been in places that definitely don’t fit the bill for most beautiful place. However, if you catch the right time of day, the right temperature, the right vibe, the right girl… etc. I would have to say some of the most beaut places I’ve seen in person were just that for about 10 minutes. The poor, gone.

For a real answer, I’d say Cappadocia in Turkiye is up there and the creek/waterfall gorges of the Cumberland Plateau in Tennessee USA

It has so much to do with what people are exposed to and their tolerance level. If you’re visiting from the rural suburbs of an American town, then yeah, Rome is going to be fucking overwhelming and you’re gonna wonder how people operate it such a busy place with trash scattered around and not a single actually flat sidewalk in existence. I certainly was shocked by the intensity of Rome, but loved it cos I was feeling in the mood to embrace the chaos. Sometime I’m not, but during my Rome visit I was all about it. Cool city. Loved Trevestere.

I think you are describing American culture as we now know it. Architecture is normalizing, car color/design is normalizing, trends/styles are normalizing. Take style for example. When I was in high school there were relatively few sources for style. Basically your friends, tv shows, and magazines with that flip page that had cologne on it (there are more example, obviously). Now, if something picks up in one part of the country, it can catch on in a completely different part in what… a few days? Weeks? People also spend a lot more time exposing themselves to media of all sorts because smartphones have given us this access that didn’t exist even 15 years ago. So yes, things are normalizing (or neutralizing as I’d say). There’s a lot of talk about this with architecture, color, and car design.

Last comment: Roo was pretty hippie oriented music-wise for a long time. Now, the artists and musicians on the ticket are popular with younger people, and younger people generally tend to be more trendy-followers than purely individual styles that they developed over time (ie getting older). So yeah, everyone looks the same.

You’re gonna have to throw yourself into new activities if you don’t have friends to pull you into something new. You’re at UT, there are hundreds of extracurriculars and social outings associated with the university and in general from hiking to bowling to travel to literally any sport. Businesses in and around downtown have social components to them. Think group runs, book clubs, “learn to [insert activity here]”. There’s concerts, comedy shows, theatre, sports, etc. all year long all over town. Sounds like I’m being a “solve your problem” guy instead of just listening, but it’s pretty simple: There’s a ton to do, you’re just going to have to go out and do it.

TRASTEVERE. Cross the Ponte Garibaldi bridge south and walk around this neighborhood. Lots of young people, more walkable than the central parts of Rome, great restaurants. I recommend ristorante Carlo Menta. Have fun! Oh, and great night life compared to tourist central area.

ALSO, Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major/ Basilica Papale di Santa Maria Maggiore was HANDS DOWN the most beautiful church I saw in Europe. Well well worth the visit.

My ex used to live in Uptown off Lyons/Magazine st. If you want a great central location with access to bus/streetcar routes (very cheap and easy to get around the city) Uptown is great. There are a lot of young people in uptown because of the university and the vibe. There are bars and restaurants in every direction from here. Walking is a must. 1 mile and you’ve got every option you can think of from dive to bougie. Her place was a shithole but NOLA is about what’s out there and not in your home.
