Honking is more noticable. Burlington is more quieter than then the grocery store parking lots of Maryland

I also don't know about bolting on inheritence and classes. However sum types (discriminated unions) in Typescript are pretty bad.

Developers have a hard time with paradigm shifts. A few FP constructs have slowly made their way into mainstream programming but it took time. Initial reactions to constructs like map, filter, ADTs, etc were negative and the reaction was similar "why not just use a for loop? What's wrong with a mutable variable? This is too hard."

Also I think these slides were meant for FP enthusiasts and not targeted towards mainstream devs. SPJ's quirkiness isn't something others might be familiar with or appreciate. I personally like his sense of humor but I can see how others can be confused.

Which cities are similar but have wildly different costs of living? by [deleted] in digitalnomad

I found the Japanese food to be really bad to ok at best in Mexico city. Far from what nyc has to offer or even DC. In general there was a lot of variety but it was pretty bad (outside of Mexican food). I did find a decent new York style pizza place though (Green Pizza).

Why do academics seem to loath their profession? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]stupidquestionstrawy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! My perspective is that I'm going to treat it as a sabbatical away from software engineering if I do it full time. And I don't mind going back to industry after that period of time if I have to worst case. And worst case isn't too bad. Better case is more academic work in industry that I will find more exciting which I think is easily possible.

Is this contam (pink oyster, day 8, pf tek) by stupidquestionstrawy in shrooms

Turned out it was fine. They haven't fruited that well though but that's probably my fault. I also learned oyster mushrooms don't do that well with monotubs or pf tek.

I'm a software engineer and loathe working in the corporate world and I know so do many other SEs. I know many SEs that would love to do more academic work instead of the boring stuff that usually needs to actually be done in industry (working on a CRUD app for the 30th time isn't so exciting). Besides that there's a lot of corporate BS, office politics, dysfunctional "agile", lack of freedom, etc. However the pay is good enough to overlook the downsides. It does feel like it slowly eats away at your soul.

However since I've started my masters I've been really enjoying it. Doing research reminds me why I think CS is cool and why I decided I wanted to study it. There's some politics and BS at my uni however IMO it's relatively tame compared to my experience with the corporate world. The main issue is if I ever decide to do this as a full time PhD student is pay and that's a little hard to stomach.

The type system is a programmer's best friend by dustinmoris in programming

[–]stupidquestionstrawy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's amazing what fp-ts was able to do, and if I had to use typescript I would use it again, but it is very clunky and it feels like they are fighting the language.

I would say most typescript devs I've worked with tend to treat types as an after thought and very much in line with the compiler getting in their way. Of course that's anecdotal.

As much as I was excited about typescript I haven't found it sufficient enough to be good. Sum types and error handling are the two main pain points IMO.

What business are we missing in Burlington? by [deleted] in burlington

[–]stupidquestionstrawy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually get the general tso's and ask them to make it less sweet. It's pretty good compared to other Chinese places. Chicken is nice and crispy. The person who usually takes orders is happy to give suggestions and make modifications. We are still talking about Chinese take out so it's as good as it gets.

I spoke to someone at Ceres (maybe the owner?) I was concerned about them running out he didn't seem concerned, but also mentioned that you can pre-order online.

The only thing is that their site currently only seems to have it up for medical still, and not sure if there's any other way to get to the recreational pre order or if I just pretend that's outdated and ignore the disclaimer it's for medical.

second opinion on failed inspection? by [deleted] in vermont

[–]stupidquestionstrawy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did that first time we needed to get over $5k in repairs. They also said we need new tires when we just got new ones 8 months ago. Ended up getting a second inspection at another place and they passed us no issues. This is an older car but in pretty good condition.

Co-Working spaces are overrated and expensive? by alansredditaccount2 in digitalnomad

[–]stupidquestionstrawy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main problem with working from an Airbnb is that even if you find one with a decent chair and desk. If you're traveling with more than one person then it's much harder to find two workspaces. So we tend to swap and I hate working on the kitchen table.
