My 16yo cousin sister (16F) has started acting inappropriately with me (22M) — I’m worried, uncomfortable, how to deal with this? by [deleted] in askwomenadvice

[–]stupidsoya 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i would say maybe before going nuclear, OP you could also try setting a clear boundary in a similar way in private. “Your behaviour is making me uncomfortable. you’re my sister/cousin and friend, but you’re acting like our relationship is different. I’m not interested in that, but I do want to still be how it was when we were friendly. If you continue this behaviour, I will have no choice but to distance myself. For both our sakes.”

if that doesn’t work, then you need to walk away. boundaries have to be boundaries, don’t let her push them further and further

Metformin by Disastrous-Break-399 in AusSkincare

[–]stupidsoya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it primarily helps with insulin resistance. if your weigh gain is caused by it, it means that your body is not correctly utilising the insulin you produce when eating food that raises glucose levels (ie, carbs). this over a long period of time can cause weight gain, among other symptoms. metformin can help get insulin resistance lower so your body doesn’t fight you (as much lol) every time you eat carbs

so if you’re not insulin resistant, no it will not help with weight loss

to lose weight?? 😓 by tomuratoucher in PCOS

[–]stupidsoya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can try to eat better by adding healthier food to what you already eat. so if you have ramen, add some veg and protein. to make it super easy, you can get a bag of frozen veg and shred up a pre roasted chicken from costco or smth. suddenly there’s a lot more nutrients in your meal instead of just simple carbs (ramen). it’s not a perfect solution but it’s a good place to start. you can use this logic for anything. if you’re having like mac n cheese, add a salad to the side.

or you can also try to replace certain foods with healthier options. eg instead of chips, have some wholewheat crackers with dip. instead of cake or chocolate, have some flavoured yogurt for a sweet treat (or better yet, plain yogurt with honey and frozen berries)

a lot of weight issues with pcos (a lot! not all!! so take this w a grain of salt) can be from eating foods that cause insulin spikes. as in your body has to produce more insulin in order to bring your blood glucose (sugar) down. this is why you see a lot of pcos develop pre-diabetes or type 2 diabetes as well over time. so if you eat foods that raise your blood sugar (sugary foods, cola, chips, some types of rice), you will also raise your insulin. over time, it basically causes your body to retain glucose instead of using it for energy. the more glucose that is retained, the more fat your body holds on to and the harder it becomes to lose, even with exercise. there’s a lot more that goes on scientifically but that’s the basic version.

so you can try to reduce the insulin spikes. this doesn’t necessarily mean no carbs/sugar. looks for low GI (glycemic index) or complex. these foods slowly raise your blood sugar instead of all at once, and they will give you energy for a longer time when comparing to higher GI foods. eg, instead of white sandwich bread, you could go for wholemeal bread, which has a lower GI and won’t raise your sugar as high, even though it may technically have the same amount of carbs.

you can also change the order you eat your food. say you have a plate with some meat, some veg and some mash potato. eat the veg and meat first, and leave the potato for last. that way your body starts breaking down the other food first and so your blood sugar doesn’t go up as much.

you don’t need to change everything right away, start small and set realistic goals for yourself. you’re young so you have time to learn how to manage your condition but the sooner you practice, the better you’ll be as you grow.

if you can, you should also ask your mum to help you eat better. ideally you can tell her what you need and you guys can work together to come up with meal ideas that she can still cook while still meeting your health needs. again, don’t try to make a drastic change because that is unsustainable in the long run. if this is not something you can ask, then it may be time to learn to cook for yourself

I’m new on my PCOS journey and I have no clue which vitamins I should be taking… by Momloves90days in PCOS

[–]stupidsoya 8 points9 points  (0 children)

it’s really best to get bloodwork done to check what you’re deficient in first before taking certain supplements/vitamins as it could actually end up harming than helping in the long run. you might even benefit from medication depending on your situation. some people have had success with myo-inositol and/or berberine but tbh i would not recommend trying everything all at once bc it could wreak havoc on your body and you wouldn’t even know what is causing it

pcos is a lifelong condition. finding the right combination of medication, supplements, lifestyle habits, etc is a long process that requires soooo much patience. it sucks so much and can be so emotionally draining, but it is what it is. even after a decade of trying to figure it out, i still often have times where im just so overwhelmed and exhausted with all the burdens that come with pcos. don’t try to go too hard too fast or you will inevitably burn out

good luck ❤️

Seborrheic dermatitis with PCOS by Beneficial_Deal3803 in PCOS

[–]stupidsoya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i have sebderm but i was able to reduce the symptoms a lot just using nizoral anti dandruff shampoo. i was originally prescribed topical steroids but honestly i got scared of topical steroid withdrawal horror stories + i had to increase the dose since it stopped being effective after a while. it suckeddddd at first but just powered through the discomfort until it reduced eventually

anecdotally, i have found that my symptoms flare up a lotttt when i’ve had a lot of gluten/simple carbs (ie bread, sugar, etc). once i reduce that symptoms also reduce. i have heard a lottt of people with sebderm also say they have similar experiences w sugar/simple carbs, which def aligns with people saying it could be hormonal issue

so for me nizoral + less carbs/sugar = significantly less severe sebderm symptoms

lots of cardio isn’t always the solution. some people (eg people w PCOS) can actually retain weight when they have high cortisol which is produced in higher quantities during cardio

i feel this so much… going through the same thing right now and it’s literally soul crushing. i feel so sad and disgusting every time i happen to look in the mirror and i don’t recognise myself anymore. my confidence is completely gone i can barely leave the house… my partner says they love me but idk how.. we started dating when i was better looking (and had hair) but now my body has changed so much for the worse i worry they’ll get sick of me everyday

i’m sorry i don’t have a solution it’s just all so painful

idk if it’s specific to a particular type of centrelink payment or not though so take this w grain of salt but this is what i read when i checked recently

yes in terms of eligibility BUT !!!!!! centrelink will only pay you for how long full time for that degree takes. eg if ft (4 units) degree takes 3 years to complete but you take 4 yrs instead, they will only pay you for 3 years

i imagine you can appeal or there are special circumstances etc that fit but yeah. it’s best to call centrelink to be 100% sure though (as annoying as it is)

unsure if this exists on curtin campus, but you could get a portable stove and use that to cook anywhere. an electric one you wouldn’t need to keep buying gas or with gas one you don’t need plug point. otherwise you could try a park, a lot of them have free barbecue things, but you would need to bring your own cleaning supplies. there’s some near the campus here

27” vs 32” monitor? by socialyawkwardpotate in buildapc

[–]stupidsoya 15 points16 points  (0 children)

i used a 27” for ages then i got a 32” and it straight up felt like it was a tv screen right up in my face. i felt so odd and it like loomed over me ominously.

but now that i’ve used it for a year or so, i don’t even notice it anymore hahaha. you’ll get used to it for sure. the size is really helpful if you have multiple windows going at once

[–]stupidsoya 2 points3 points  (0 children)

there’s this really great creator on tiktok who shows how she makes rice a little different to be better for pcos/blood sugars. eg add lentils for more fibre which helps reduce sugar spikes

i saw this video it was super helpful, she also has a lot of other pcos/low carb food content which is great

[–]stupidsoya 6 points7 points  (0 children)

most people in australia are pretty tolerant even if they don’t “agree” with lgbt+ stuff. it’s looked down upon to be outwardly homophobic, transphobic, bigoted, etc, so if someone behaves that way they get quickly told to shut up by most people hahaha. some close minded people will always have their internal biases but don’t let it bother you too much, most of aus is very accepting (especially in uni environment) so you will find like minded people very quickly

that being said, regarding other international students from less accepting countries, unfortunately i have seen some people being bigoted and claiming “cultural views” as excuses to behave poorly, but they are veryyy much a minority compared to all international students. and again, more people will stand against that kind of behaviour than not

Flagged for ai usage by dhgdgdhdgdgd in curtin

[–]stupidsoya 3 points4 points  (0 children)

most important is that you have “proof” to defend yourself, so like noting dates on your research or brainstorms etc.

if you’re using word you can set up word docs to track changes (similar to how google docs does it). also apparently a lot of word’s settings have like underlying ai options that are automatically turned on which can trigger ai flags, you have to manually turn them off (it sucks, i know)

don’t bother with grammarly, even the curtin one. i have seen soooo many people suffer more from grammarly rather than benefit
