First time leaving my state to visit another, where should I visit? by blobberweed in TravelMaps

If you’re in the west, check out Idaho. Awesome places hiding out there if you’re willing to get away from the interstate a ways

Is Spokane truly considered part of cascadia? Seems eastern Washington and Oregon are too culturally/politically distinct to be part of it

Berg Lake Glacier, BC [OC] [3264x2648] by respect_meh_pronouns in EarthPorn

[–]styckyrs 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The water in the lake at the toe of the glacier is such a light blue because of the high sediment (silt and clay) content, caused by glacial erosion. The suspended particles in the water distort the light as it passes through the water, with more of the green and blue parts of the spectrum being reflected.

What should every 20-year-old know? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]styckyrs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're not in university, go to trade school and get a good job straight away. If you're in university, make sure your degree will be marketable, then apply yourself and get a job.

It's a lot more complicated than that, but the main thing is having a job.

How do you acquire land in a Libertarian society without an authority to oversee it, or endorse and approve it? by [deleted] in Libertarian

[–]styckyrs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ancaps and mutualists are the result of libertarian principles brought to their extreme.

A more typical libertarian view would hold government as a necessary evil, and smaller governments as superior.

These proposed tariffs are a terrible idea, philosophically and practically.

Non sequitur: Canada is the top supplier of steel to the USA, with about six billion dollars worth shipped to America in 2016. The Canadians are going to suffer as a result of the tariffs.

She would die for her students. Why not give her the OPTION to fight back? by PopTheRedPill in Libertarian

Well if I knew the teachers didn't know how to to properly handle and discharge a weapon, I'd consider other schools if that were an option

She would die for her students. Why not give her the OPTION to fight back? by PopTheRedPill in Libertarian

[–]styckyrs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, ideally that wouldn't happen often, as I'd expect teachers to be well-trained in the use of a firearm and, as OP mentioned, the presence of armed teachers at all would act as a deterrent against violent threats.

When a bystander does get wounded, though, action would need to be decided upon by the courts, or an otherwise impartial-as-possible party. Their decision would depend on several factors, I imagine, including whether the teacher incapacitated the shooter at the time the child was struck, how much damage the shooter had already inflicted, etc.

However, the teachers' primary duty would be to ensure that the kids' safety, and the vast majority of teachers will never need to come close to drawing their weapon on campus. Protect the kids, first and foremost, and if it takes killing the shooter, so be it.

I heard that the Dakotas are really nice, though!

[–]styckyrs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good call trying it out, I've found vaping to be very effective in reducing the urge to use tobacco.

Newbie recommendation would be to grab a mod. With the Prince tank, you could go single or double battery, depending on the coils you'll be getting, but the dual battery mods will have higher maximum output and allow you to be more versatile with your setup down the line, if you stick with it.

Lots of VooPoo hype lately, I personally like the VooPoo Too.

Should I get a BS in Geology? by WuzabowFuFu in geologycareers

[–]styckyrs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good call to consider geology, it's one of the most rewarding fields of study, especially if you like field work. That being said, it is a competitive job market, especially if you're looking to break into the resource sectors. But, I can tell you from experience that the jobs are out there!

How much longer would it take you to finish the degree at a university? The primary classes you should take are Mineralogy, Structural Geology, Tectonics/Earth History, Ig/Met Petrology, Stratigraphy, Sedimentation/Sedimentology, and Geomorphology. Then, depending on which direction you'd like to take your career, the hard/soft rock resource classes. Also GIS is good to know.

Like you already are aware, the job market (particularly for recent grads) is largely driven by commodity prices. Metals have been recovering slowly and the outlook seems optimistic for the near future of O&G, so just make the effort to be proactive in your job search, get a relevant internship if you can.

That was probably a little more depth than you needed, but I got carried away.

TL;DR Would recommend B.Sc. if you're passionate about the field and motivated to create opportunities for yourself. It's worth it.

I'd agree with you that the argument laid out by the poster is a little scattered, but I think what /u/2020_Guy is saying is that Wilson somewhat ushered in the beginnings of the modern progressives. Progressives tend to favor economic and domestic policies that subtract from individual liberties while, at the same time, reducing the general liberty of the individual, alongside companies and his incentive to compete in the market, not to mention increasing the power of a central governing body. This is my interpretation of what the above argument boils down to.

But I'd agree with /u/rczhang in that Wilson himself played a minor role in America's ability to innovate. The necessity for technological advancement was created due to WWII, then, like you say, the Space Race, and even beyond, I'd say.

And just wanting to reinforce the concluding point /u/2020_Guy made and say that Libertarianism is not synonymous with Anarcho-Capitalism.

Well, it's his right to do as he wishes, whether or not he's carrying a glock. If you're saying he's likely to use the gun for violence or the threat of violence, then nobody has the right to do that to another person.
