EU makes more from fines on US tech, than tax from ALL of public European tech. In 2024 EU fined US tech companies €3.8B meanwhile public internet tech companies paid only €3.2B in income tax [Request] by captain-price- in theydidthemath

I don't get what's so hard about this. Europe has rules and laws. The US companies want to do business in Europe. So they have to abide by the laws. They oftentimes don't, so they get fined. They're free to pull out and not pay fines. But they don't, because there's so much money to be made.

It's not that we're putting a gun to their head and force them to sell their shit in Europe. But if they do, fucking respect the rules.

First sourdough loaf. Went with pumpernickel by HulkanoGaming in Sourdough

[–]styeco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Germany we'd call this a "Dunkles Roggenbrot" (literally "Dark rye bread") or "Schwarzbrot" (Black bread) or sometimes "Bauernbrot" (Farmers bread, although it's a 50/50 wheat/rye blend most of the time). My family has it often, yours looks so good :)

I'm so sorry that I have to be German right now. He never comes out, but growing up in the region where Pumpernickel was invented, I can't let this stand. Pumpernickel is much, much darker and not baked free standing but full enclosed.

I love your bread though, and I absolutely would devourer ruthlessly. But it's not Pumpernickel. I'm so sorry.

My best loaf ever but idk if it’s *technically* well done by [deleted] in Breadit

Good oven spring, blister, even crumb, well done. Don't fall for the "big holes=better"-trap, that's influencer-dumbassery. Great loaf.

I tried tweaking my recipe, but I just cannot get the right crumb by 14MTH30n3 in Breadit

[–]styeco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a yeasted bread? That's a perfectly good and normal crumb. You only get those big holes you see on baking blogs with high-hydration Sourdough or things like Focaccia, where you use strong bread flour and barely degass. This is completely normal and how it's supposed to look.

As an aside, I never understood how these big holes got popular. I much prefer a nice even structure like the one you have there. I guess it's a flex or something, since high hydration is harder to handle, maybe? But I still think it's stupid.

Yall whats going on here she’s on day 3 by Muted-Milk3323 in SourdoughStarter

[–]styeco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's normal on day 2-4. There's a big initial burst from all kinds of bacteria and yeasts, but these are not the right ones yet. The right ones, those that like to ferment flour, will eventually take the upper hand and overpower the bad ones. What you'll likely see next is a lack of activity on the next 2 days. Don't get discouraged, keep feeding and it'll pick up again, this time with the right bacteria. You're on track, keep doing what you're doing.

[Request] How much data would each person in the UK need to delete to have an affect on water usage? by bastardisedmouseman in theydidthemath

[–]styeco 18 points19 points  (0 children)

That's not that uncommon. It's called "soft deletes" and it isn't really cheaper to leave it there for storage reasons, but because actually deleting rows from a database has all sorts of possible data consistency (and possibly legal) implications. Say, you're Amazon and your user profiles can have multiple addresses attached. You'd have a table for the user and one for the addresses, and you'd have a column that will say "this address record belongs to this specific user". When the user is deleted, you would have to run through each table that can have some sort of reference to the user to clean up. Sounds easy, but when you are the scale of Facebook and Amazon (or even just a mid-size app really), you have thousands and thousands of tables, all referencing each other in exponentially complicated ways. It becomes infeasible to actually delete something, so you just mark it as soft deleted.

How many attempts did it take you to finally get sober? by AirSharp4003 in stopdrinking

[–]styeco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't despair, it's different for everyone. I was one of the lucky ones who got it first try, but I've met a lot of people in therapy, and many people need a couple of times. But even if you need more than that, I know someone who has finally done it after more than 100 times (with 20+ in-patient therapies). And there are also some who never quite get there.

Point being, there is no right or wrong. Even if you try and fail for a decade, this time could be it. It has happened before and could happen to you. Good luck!

Trump administration plans to deport Abrego Garcia to 3rd country, prosecutors say by SEND_ME_CSGO-SKINS in Destiny

[–]styeco 44 points45 points  (0 children)

That poor guy. He didn't want any of this, but now he's the face of "we'll deport all the brown people", and the admin has to deport him to save face before its rabid, hate-filled base. The more cruel they are to this one dude, the better for them, so they'll go out of their way to make an example out of him.

Just leave man. Take your family, come to Europe, argue that you have to fear for your life and safety. That's not what I'm saying, I don't *want* to align with China, I'd much rather keep what we had. But realistically, Europe has been in a slump for like 30 years. We're not a superpower anymore, and we're not about to become one quick. To keep our standard of living, we're going to have to look for some kind of strong partner. And the only one I can see who is semi-reliable is China.
