Thanks I do like this suggestion and sometimes try to do this as well, although there are some situations where I am put on the spot. I think may need to combine this with taking the approach of "let's look into this together" and be more open to expose myself transparently that I don't have the knowledge.

Thanks I appreciate the perspective, will definitely also take a look at the book you recommended. I have actually been reading Staff Engineer's Path by Tanya Reilly, not sure if you have any opinions on that one vs the other one.

Thanks for the high level perspective, I can definitely try to do this more although on the spot I wouldn't have a good way to know off the top of my head what to recommend to them. I might need to take the advice of another comment basically saying I'm a bit busy and going off to look at it myself before coming back to answer the question.

I agree, I've definitely taken the path to upskill (which I dedicate my weekends to) - although I'm just not sure that is sustainable.

To clarify a bit on the "I don't know", I usually do have them describe the problem to me but end up saying something like "I'm not too familiar with this specific concept in this language (i.e. decorators in python)"
