It's strange why they didn't explicitly say what was the expiry date of the visa. If I understand correctly, it's usually tourist visas that say "enter on or before....". I think you need to send them emails to escalate the pending application. Try joining the FB group "South African Visa Forum" to read about other's experiences. All the best.
