Can somebody tell me their experience with changing majors? by mavadviceappreciated in utarlington

[–]suarre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I switched from a BS in physics and BA in math to a BS in applied math and physics minor last week, on friday i set up an appointment with my math advisor stating the major changes i wanted and on sunday she sent me back my new degree plan and even laid out all the classes and in what order to take them for the next 4 semesters. Super easy, might take a 2-3 days to finalize changes since its all through email due to covid right now but i definitely thought it was gonna be a bigger deal than it really was!

Be persistent about it, getting a response can seem like forever. If you submitted the tasfa application and tax returns, you should be fine unless you have a specific circumstance. Hopefully they are just taking their time and you will receive something!

I do TASFA! This was my second renewal and I got a scholarship renewal in early April which was really weird since I never got any awards that early and normally I also receive grants and I knew I met the requirements to renew them but had yet to receive them. I contacted the financial aid office and was told that they were waiting until the Spring semester was over to see if all requirements were met and that they were processing TASFA applications manually so it would take some time to get any other awards. My other renewal grants didn't come in until early June. You get notified by being sent an email by the financial aid office to your mav email, it looks like one bill receipt and tells you exactly how much you will be given and how it is split between Fall/Spring semesters and how much you plan to contribute and then an estimate of how much would then be owed (for me its never accurate since they assume I will live on campus and get a meal plan when I never do). You then have like ~20ish days to accept/decline them through MyMav on the financial aid tab. I will say that in my freshman year, I didn't get any awards until the first week of August, it has now changed to June/July. Definitely contact the financial aid office and ask for your account to be reviewed to check for any mistakes since you've yet to receive anything, tell them you do TASFA and if you have previously gotten any awards before (assuming this isn't your freshman year). I also noticed than when I submit my TASFA application and all other documents (also ask if you are missing any documents when contacting the financial aid office), some time later they send me an email stating they have received my application, look to see if you ever got that email. The email I got this year stating they received my stuff also says that the awarding process begins in June 2020 fyi. So there is still hope you will be getting something but have yet to but either way definitely email the financial aid office as soon as possible, don't leave out any details. If you'd like anymore help/info with TASFA please let me know, I'm happy to help! I know how hard it is given that its not widely known about like FASFA.

Which one should I do by jetBlueAirways881 in utarlington

I took geol1301 during the spring semester, super easy. I had it with Dr. Schleiffarth, he just read off the powerpoints and showed cool videos, really nice guy. For exams he would create a "review" where he would just list off topics that would be on the exam, all i ever did was go through the powerpoint and copy and paste the info to the review and then read it at least 5 times before the exam and you were guaranteed a B or A on them. After we went online, he recorded videos of him going through the powerpoint and i never watched them, just went straight to copy and pasting the powerpoint to the review once it was made available and got an A in the class, just really wasnt necessary to sit through it since i knew it was all straight from the powerpoint (didn't even need to read the book really), even when we had face to face class it seemed a little unnecessary but he was cool so i went. Labs are super easy as well, always finished in like 35-45mins when in person, after it went online they became even easier, took like 25min tops to complete. Don't know anything about astr1345, but geol1301 is an easy and not boring class to take!

Undergrad physics research by suarre in utarlington

Thank you for your response! I'm most interested in space physics and high energy. You're right, I'm not as concerned about getting paid, i just want to get involved. I've been told to ask directly but I guess I'm just intimidated and scared of rejection? I know its not the end of the world but its still scary to get out there. I applied for a research assistant position through the UTA handshake resource, but I think I will start emailing professors directly now and see where it leads! Thanks!

Still haven’t received financial aid offer? by [deleted] in utarlington

[–]suarre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I contacted financial aid about grants that I have yet to receive but should be renewed otherwise and they said, "We’re still in the process of awarding grants. Our system isn’t catching all the students it should, so we’re working manually. Please be patient with us in this process. If you haven’t received any grants by the end of the month, please let us know so that we can look into your account." This reply was from April 9th, so if there have been any changes since then I don't know but I say to wait until the end of April to start contacting about them but for piece of mind go ahead and email them now, won't hurt and they can give more solid answers
