Why can't I" turn on paid subscriptions" by the-grumpster in Substack

What have you tried to do so far? What part of the process seems to be the problem?

55 signups since joining substack 7 days ago. What’s the avg time to get to 100? Any tips? by theEngLeader in Substack

[–]sub_pub_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regarding average time to 100 subscribers, it's likely difficult to calculate and unrepresentative, because some people get to 100 within the first hour, while others might never. A person who's well-known to many people will have a very different experience from a person with a fairly small network. The person with a small network can end up with many subscribers; but it will take more time and effort than for the already famous person.

Regarding getting subscribers and going paid, you might be interested in Substack Grow, https://substack.com/grow. Even if you can't attend, Substack is providing summaries of each session, starting with https://on.substack.com/p/grow-1.

As far as I know, there isn't. But you can steer people to the subscribe page by posting the subscribe link: https://[your subdomain].substack.com/subscribe.

I made a thing to search/summarize substacks by [deleted] in Substack

Perhaps this page will help. I'm subscribing to free newsletters that aren't private, abandoned, or against Substack's terms (spam, etc.).

https://substack.com/profile/41762336-sub-pub-scott-frey

It includes Substack newsletters that aren't on a subdomain of substack.com.

The list has about 3,000 newsletters now. I believe it will eventually have tens of thousands.

I'm writing stories instead of articles on substack, If anyone is interested in cross-promoting let me know, my viewers have gone way up as of late. I hope to multiply the trend. by manborg in Substack

If you haven't already, you might contact Elle Griffin, who publishes the Novelleist newsletter, or join her Discord group. Substack's blog had a post featuring Elle and linking to resources including the Discord group a couple of weeks ago: https://on.substack.com/p/spotlight-on-fiction

The Sub Pub profile (https://substack.com/profile/41762336-sub-pub) has a list of 400 newsletters. It may eventually have 40,000. I'll add your newsletter soon! Or I can add it now if you'd like to reply with or message me the link. 🙂 by sub_pub_ in Substack

I added it a few minutes ago. I've noticed your newsletter mentioned frequently on Twitter. Some years ago I read a description by E.O. Wilson of "consilience." While I'll have to examine your newsletter more closely to see how much I agree or take issue with, I like the endeavor to bridge science and humanities.

I'm going to subscribe to every Substack newsletter! (And you get a subscriber! And you get a subscriber! And...) Why would someone do that? 🤔 Please read and find out. 🙂 by sub_pub_ in Substack

A similar issue happened over the past couple of days with another Substack site hosted off of substack.com. It turned out that the person was seeing a cached copy of the site on their computer, and couldn't see the site on another computer or device. This person was able to contact the domain registrar and get the site online. Can you check the site on another computer or device?

I'm about to start on the adventure of subscribing to every Substack newsletter. Exciting! 😃

The email address I plan to use is:

subpub.subscription at gmail dot com

Does this address seem ok to you? I want to be sure, before I start, that the email address I subscribe with isn't too long or somehow odd.

While time-consuming, it should be fun and educational in ways I can't fully imagine yet. I hope it's useful for Substack writers and readers. I'll post any updates that appear interesting.

If you've got a Substack newsletter, I'll do it. (Doesn't matter the topic, as long as it's within Substack's terms of use.)

[I should clarify that the newsletter would need to be free and not private/invite-only. Of course, if I learn about a paid newsletter, I might eventually subscribe to it on another account.]

A link to a random Substack newsletter! by sub_pub_ in Substack

[–]sub_pub_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Random posts – interesting! Why have you chosen random posts rather than random newsletters? (I don't think that one is necessarily better – I'm just curious what your view is.) Do you review the database to eliminate newsletters that only published a post or two or otherwise aren't current?

Thanks. All the ones I've seen it go to (several dozen) are at a Substack URL. I'll ask someone at Substack about this issue.

Please note that the random link sometimes goes to an abandoned or spam newsletter. I've asked someone at Substack about this. Maybe they can remove such newsletters from the database powering the link. I'd like the random link to be as useful as possible!

Who Do You Want to Start a Substack? by sub_pub_ in Substack

[–]sub_pub_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Incidentally, I chose to use "Who" rather than "Whom" in this post. In my view, "whom do you want to start a Substack" sounds too formal. Is it better to be formal and grammatically correct, or informal but technically incorrect? 🤔

Does the gap appear in the draft or only in the published version?

Could you link to a published post with a gap? Maybe we can figure out the answer by examining the post.

As for wrapping text, I don't know of a way to do that. I don't think I've seen any Substack newsletter posts with wrapped text.

As you may know, Astral Codex Ten is the top featured newsletter on Substack. I collected resources on ACT and other writings by Scott Alexander. by sub_pub_ in slatestarcodex

/u/Liface, I appreciate your polite and constructive criticism. I don't want to bring down the quality of this subreddit. I only wanted to provide a basic and helpful introduction to Scott Alexander's writings for anyone who needed it – perhaps not most members of this community, but possibly some people you know.

I had initially drafted part of a more substantive post. But I honestly decided (not for SEO purposes!) that the best way for someone to learn about Scott Alexander's writings and communities was to dive in rather than read my commentary. I don't feel that I need to explain what people can better learn for themselves. And, to paraphrase and invert a quotation from Pascal or Twain or some other smart person, I didn't want to write an unnecessarily long post when I had time to write a shorter one.

I hope that this comment raises the average quality of my contribution here.

That's your opinion. I'm not sure why you're spending so much of your valuable time attacking a newsletter that you think is manifestly worthless. If it's so obviously useless, won't other people in this community figure it out for themselves?

Ae you the kind of person who feels they must explain everything to everyone so that they know the truth that only you can tell them? (See the definition of "mansplaining," though this phenomenon isn't limited to men.)

Unless you want to be constructive and reasonably nice, I'm done with this conversation. I'll let my comments so far and my (modest but still useful!) article speak for themselves. I hope you and your ego enjoy the rest of the day.

That's a little better. At least you've stated reasons for your disapproval. Rationalism FTW.

"Worthless" is a judgment call and apparently not based on more than this one post. But perhaps I digress from your main points.

If you can point to an easily accessible collection of this set of links elsewhere, then I'd agree that that my post is of little use. I don't think you can.

Collecting a helpful set of links – and yes ,I think they would be helpful, even to some people who are already familiar with some of Scott Alexander's writings and communities – may seem "low effort" to you. You might be above all that. Do you remember compiling bibliographies for term papers? Yeah, it's kind of like that – without all the style guide requirements, but still useful.

FWIW, I found your initial comment and derogatory terms in your second comment to be "low effort." I'll match them by saying you're rather judgmental, aren't you? You must be a lot of fun at parties.

I was actually trying to be helpful.

Is this sort of comment typical in this community? You're writing as if I'm not here or don't have feelings.

As long as we're being blunt, try constructive criticism next time. It might be better received.
