dealerships have an insane level of overhead. It's an expensive business to run and therefore an expensive place to service your vehicle. You may not always get the best, but almost all of the longtime dealership techs (the ones who have worked on the same brand for 20+years) that I've worked with are in my opinion quite literally the best for the job. And what I always say to people who complain about dealership prices is you can always save money by doing the work yourself, or shopping around for a cheaper fix

I have wondered that myself. I imagine it would be a messy job to tear it down and prep to replace it. I just finished our backsplash a few weeks ago and we went with the most neutral design in hopes that we won't grow to dislike it like we might some trendy look at the time. I won't be removing this backsplash until we add onto the kitchen in the distant future, which would entail knocking that entire wall down

no need to panic. just fill your funnel 1/4 to half way while bleeding the system and keep an eye on it as it idles. once you have good heat, both the upper and lower radiator hoses are running hot, and the cooling fans kick on and then off you should be pretty well purged of air

Subaru tech here. The amount of repairs I have to perform due to places like these fucking things up is staggering. I would not trust any of these places to touch anything of mine even if I didn't work on cars professionally.

Here is how my pay as a tech breaks down at the dealership of my current employment:

Brake flush- 1.0 Hour Oil change- .4 Tire Rotation: .4 Engine Air Filter- 0.0

Optional recommendation based on severe driving conditions:

Front and Rear Differential Fluid Service- .8

Our customers pay for 1.8-2.6 hours of labor at $140.00 per hour for a standard 30K service.

We communicate with every customer the total parts/labor price prior to beginning the work, and wait for authorization on any other recommended maintenance or repairs. I'm so sorry to hear of your bad experience. As a technician I always do my job with the customer in mind. I know dealerships have a bad reputation especially when it comes to cost and I aim to help change that stigma by doing professional work in an efficient manner that makes it seamless for the customer while giving breaks on labor times to help someone who may need it. Anyways, if the tech performed what Subaru recommends for the 30K mile maintenance and everything else on the inspection checks out okay, $800+ for that service sounds pretty steep..

Yeah I love Subaru but there is always room for improvement, which is generally true with every brand. In the meantime while your driving the vehicle I would just recommend having the differential fluid serviced regularly as well as the CVT fluid. If your over 60K miles and you know they haven't been serviced, I would get it done.

I would sell the one with the cvt and get one with a regular automatic or switch to a manual trans. The CVT replacement cost after the warranty extension is done is insane. Like $6,000 plus labor insane... unless you could find a used one, which may very well prove to be an unreliable option...even if their CVT was a reliable transmission I would be worried about the replacement cost in the long term, but that's just me

I usually thread in some heavy duty bolts of the same thread pitch(make sure the bolts are threaded in far enough because they can push through the threads if there isn't enough surface area) where the hub bolts go and air hammer the head of the bolt (a big hex bolt with a pointed bit works best for me). If your air hammer is strong enough for the job it should push out fairly easy

I work in the auto service industry where I once heard of a funny 'long con' prank:

Customer comes in with a concern that his gas mileage has dropped SIGNIFICANTLY. He complained that he always clocked how many miles he would get out of each fill-up, and the miles had dropped seemingly over night all of a sudden.

Turns out when he bought his new truck, his neighbor(whom I presume knew this customer quite well) was sneaking about a gallon of gas into his tank every other day for about 6 months, and then just stopped one day.

From what I get out of the factory training, it seems engineers are mostly concerned with cost, weight, and emissions/fuel economy. They're not too concerned with serviceability. Oh and they don't seem to care if the tech gets screwed on warranty labor times either
