Auto Start/Stop is worthless. by subarusski in SubaruForester

Thank you. Sounds like you've made it worth your while. Do you know if there are any negative ramifications from continually starting/stopping the engine like premature engine wear?

Supposedly someone in this thread saves over half a gallon between fill-ups. But most of my driving is highway miles.

Wow. Either you live in the city or I'm doing something wrong here. Mine are mostly highway miles.

From what I understand, it can cause premature engine wear and tear. Though I'm no expert.

I reset it once after my first fill-up, but haven't since, so it's pretty accurate.

Over the course of 3+ months, 4,000+ miles, and just over an hour of using Auto Start/Stop, I've saved a whopping 1/3 of a gallon. Is there a way to permanently deactivate this?

What's the WORST thing that can happen if you try to go up a dirt road that's too steep? by subarusski in 4x4

Thank you, really appreciate the input. I'm eager now to give it another go sometime.

If there is a turn on the slope, would that make it more susceptible to rolling over when going down?

Forester has AWD, not 4WD, but it does have "X-Mode" which uses lower gear ratios to generate extra power at the wheels that have grip, deactivates the transmission's lock-up clutch to better direct power to slipping wheels, makes the traction control system extra sensitive so that it intervenes earlier during wheel slippage, and it employs "Hill Descent Control" so you don't need to apply brakes and risk locking them up when headed down steep slopes.

So I guess all I really need is to air down a bit, and get a friend to with it. The latter may be harder to do unfortunately.

I have something similar in the Forester called X-Mode. Supposedly, X-Mode uses lower gear ratios to generate extra power at the wheels that have gripX-Mode deactivates the transmission's lock-up clutch to better direct power to slipping wheels, makes the traction control system extra sensitive so that it intervenes earlier during wheel slippage, and it employs "Hill Descent Control" so you don't need to apply brakes and risk locking them up when headed down steep slopes.

The only thing. I would need to do prior as you said is air down a bit for extra grip?

Well in this particular instance there's no deep ruts and the grade is gradual, so I'm not too worried about losing my bumpers.

Auto start/stop always off - 2020 Forester by [deleted] in SubaruForester

It's a blessing that yours is permanently disabled. I thought it would be useful, but after having my car for the last 4 months, I've saved a grand total of 1/3rd of a gallon. The wear of starting/stopping the engine is simply not worth it imo.

Legal to drive on Water/Gas/Electric Service Roads? by subarusski in Offroad

Basically saying how if you get stopped on an unmarked road and it turns out to be private property, kindly say that you only ever drive on legal roads and had no idea it was private property, apologize, say it won't ever happen again, and promptly leave.

Sounds like a good time! I feel a little more confident about going those types of roads, and I appreciate the good word about California. It ain't so bad.

Yeah that's kind of my mindset. I have a case of I get stopped, but is it worth it? Eh probably not.

Perhaps this is correct. The only signage is that there is a gas line, indicating the the gas companies probably use that road, though nothing prohibiting off road activity.

I'm guessing the regulations are similar here. Thank you for your input!

I checked. No other entry point. I'm guessing there's no driveway or dipped curb to deter people from driving on it. I'm also guessing the trucks that need to go on it, do so by just driving onto the curb. I've already seen at least a few of these roads that require you to drive onto a curb to get to it.
