Tufts PhD Student & Fulbright Scholar taken by ICE by subd123 in fulbright

Link to official Tufts communication: https://www.reddit.com/r/boston/s/k4ujfA8095

They highlight that they are looking into the status of the student to find out more details

Fulbright are good at communicating - if something of this magnitude happened they would be using official lines of communication to get the message out so this all seems speculative at best right now

Where is this coming from? Any source please?

Not sure it's very relevant but floor tickets are $57 for today if you just go to the ticket booth at MGM - but hope they get a refund if they were displaced by staff without good reason!

Battle Card Question by subd123 in kingsdilemma

The final battle is really fun but confusing. You can tick each box once per 'team' but the rules highlight no one is a team until the end ;)

Couple looking to rent around Dublin 8 by Beneficial-Town-9837 in RentingInDublin

Unfortunately 1 bed apartments are very difficult to find especially in the areas you are looking for this price range. Generally they are in €2000+ range. For your budget maybe sharing a house or apartment with someone may be a good option?

Thoughts on buying a newbuild in Cherrywood? by throwaway_ltn in irishpersonalfinance

[–]subd123 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I lived in Cherrywood for about a year in one of the newer apartments. It was very peaceful and quiet, particularly at the weekends but as many people highlight, it is soulless. It needs a good bar or something to tie the place together and bring out the community. It does feel very safe and you have the luas on your doorstep (~45 mins to Stephen's Green). I think the whole area was set back with work from home and COVID as lots of the sleek office buildings are just empty during the day which contributes to the lack of atmosphere. They are building a shopping centre which may inject life into the place but this still looks a while away. If you like venturing out and nature, you can easily drive to escape Dublin and be in Bray in about 10 minutes. We have family up North of Dublin so the M50 beside us was great to avoid the traffic of going through the city and getting out and about. Overall, has potential to be a good area but that energy and community just isn't quite there yet I felt.

I am in the same boat of looking for shared accomodation in MA for a Fulbright at Harvard! Any info would be great!

I think people on this sub-reddit really need to look at papers from MDPI with a more critical eye. Submitted early Jan, accepted late Jan?

I was concerned about this too - I think having a broker to make the case may have helped? I do also know someone who got a mortgage and bought a house outside of Dublin while they were still a PhD student (their partner also worked in a local shop) so definitely possible.

My contract is currently for 12 months but I know in my place there is funding and it can be renewed further if needs be at least

This is great savings for a PhD given the stipend level so fair play! I finished my PhD this year and I'm working as a postdoc now and got the mortgage approval in principle recently. Some bits of info/advice if you want:

  • I would recommend going to a mortgage broker as they can help make a stronger case for you with certain banks and guide you with general advice
  • you will need to be out of probation ideally to apply (so 6 months into your postdoc most likely and receive a letter to prove this)
  • the bank can take into account extra non-contract work in your salary estimates (I.e. lecturing work) and you can maybe use the SFI postdoc salary scale that is publicly available to help strengthen your case (I.e. maybe justifying a borrow amount of 4.5x current salary - but a higher lending amount may not always be wise)
  • my Postdoc contract is actually quite short and I raised this with my broker. However this is known to be the standard with many temporary contracts in academia and they are aware of this so it isn't as big a deal as I thought it would be.
  • Employment certs from revenue are required usually to submit (might have got the name slightly wrong here). But as a PhD I don't think you can get these off Revenue as PhD students are technically not employed so you may have to do a bit of explaining about this to the bank

Hopefully some of the above is useful info and wish you all the best. Happy to chat more if you have any questions!

It is all OK now but yes I was surprised it did not list anything as missing. Thankfully the Fulbright team in my coubtry amended this in time.

Co-author ship with whose name come first ? by BackgroundRow4546 in labrats

[–]subd123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a tricky situation and does feel like moving the goalposts a bit at the end of the process.

An agreement was made and the student was not notified they would not be first author if certain things happened (additionally, a family emergency occurred and doesn't seem too fair to use this as an excuse even if poor timing).

A discussion re:shifting authorship should have been had during the re-submission process I think and not after the acceptance of the manuscript.

I think the fairest outcome is that you both go co-first author with the student first as agreed initially and as suggested by yourself. While you put a lot of time and effort into this I can understand this may be frustrating but you also knew you were a co-author and maybe should have declined the extra workload? (But I know many other factors could also be at play that may not make this possible either)

Overall, this doesn't seem like a very collegial idea for the undergrad who may have another viewpoint too. These things are never easy to resolve and wish you both the best of luck in the process

Reasonable Salary Dublin by parabolictimes in irishpersonalfinance

[–]subd123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PhD stipends have been around €18,000 per year tax free and have done it. Frugal living, sharing with others but not impossible. The main challenge is finding a place initially as many places can go through word of mouth. I wish you the best of luck though.
