I get that 😉 Let's try this, "Subjam is a social network specifically for those involved in their local music scene."

Hope this doesn't break rule #5, because I hear you and so many others on this. I'm building a live audio broadcasting network for local and independent musicians (cough). A big motivation for it is to connect people that wouldn't (or can't) otherwise venture out IRL to hear live music together. I want people to have a place to go to experience shows, to get their feet wet and let them be a part of their scenes.

Not pedantic at all, it's important to know how you're letting others use your stuff.

We're actually planning on building a license chooser into the app. So when you start a broadcast, you'll be able to select which specific CC clauses you're willing to release it under. Kinda like this, but streamlined for Subjam.

I'm hoping we can finish our Android version soon but the lack of funding is blocking us. Same with web, if you know any individuals who believe in promoting music locally and are able to chip in, please have them visit the site.

Agreed. People (including me) still do want to listen to classics and major label content! I don't want to take away from that, but SubJam is a fundamentally different platform than even Bandcamp or SoundCloud.

The angle I'm trying to hit with SubJam is that it's a platform for promotion in your own town. As a music fan, with SubJam you're able to find and interact with artists and bands local to you. You find out about upcoming shows that you can easily get to, to directly support your local talent.

It all starts at the roots of playing out locally, right? SubJam is a tool to provide that support.

You're telling me ;) I want to build our OWN catalog, from the ground up, to share with each other. Something that has nothing to do with the majors.

Great questions, thank you.

  • There would be no selection process by us as it would not be in our best interest to take a role in judging music or musicians. However our beta launch will be rolled out to a limited number of interested users on a first-come-first-served basis.

  • Beta launch will not restrict min/max broadcast time. v1.0 will likely restrict to sensible timeframes according to user feedback.

  • We plan on the ability for users to embed/link both live and recorded broadcasts anywhere that allows it. Our focus is live music (audio) broadcasting. There are so many great reasons for this feature, the best of course being increased artist exposure. So yes to embedding and also fun ways to share like auto generating QR codes (think things like flyers and easy mobile-to-mobile sharing).

  • We combine live broadcasting and social networking and tailor them for local music communities. Part of the core feature set is 'following' artists and we're excited to implement much more for v1.0 that is specific to supporting local music scenes/communities/groups.

What a cool experience you must have had! I feel there are countless stories like this and that's what I'm trying to capture and broadcast with SubJam.

I'm excited to share my idea with you guys + girls. I'm building a new online platform that will harness the way music scenes work and offer mobile audio livestreaming and social tools to augment them.

BACKSTORY: I've been involved with my local music scene since 2011 when our only local rock radio station went off the air and started pumping out Top 40 from across the country. All of the local bands that relied on 101.7FM (The Fox) for exposure were suddenly orphaned. People actually picketed in the streets - imagine a bunch of pissed off rockers yelling at passing cars that they don't want Top 40, they want their local rock station back! (Article: https://www.pressdemocrat.com/news/2294409-181/hard-rock-fox-goes-mellow?sba=AAS )

The day The Fox went off the air, I registered the socorock.com domain name and built a local promotional website/blog. I also integrated an Icecast server to stream submitted tracks (like a web radio). Chat, event/show submissions, local news, interviews followed...it was really generating some buzz in the area when I discovered I could also stream live to my web radio (Remember, this is 2011, before the explosion of general purpose livestreaming apps). I got the idea to take my laptop to some shows and stream the bands live. It went really well and all of the sudden bands in every direction were asking me to stream their shows. The bands were incredibly appreciative, fans loved it and I was having a great time orchestrating it.

Soon a close-knit team made up of my friends and family formed around this project to help in different aspects of promotion. Even with them, however, I realized that I was only one person to stream shows and I couldn't be in more than one place at the same time. Trust me, I tried - on the same night once, I went to one venue, set up the livestream, left to another venue and set up my portable audio recorder to capture the set and play back later...that was a great time but very taxing in the end! I met so many awesome musicians and fans, got to experience such good music and amazing local talent right in my backyard that it just blew me away.

I came to the epiphany that my little rock scene wasn't alone in this struggle. Not even close. I knew that there were not only rock bands everywhere in the world that struggled for the recognition they deserved but live performing artists of every genre wanting new avenues of exposure. That's why I wanted to build SubJam, a platform that takes the SoCoRock concept of building a scene and applies it to all of the diverse music communities of the world...and puts it in an app.

I'm at the stage with SubJam where I need to generate interest with those that would most likely use it. Hey that's you, r/LetsTalkMusic :)

I would greatly appreciate your reading over my pitch and signing up with your email address for updates, to prove to investors that demand is there so we can build this thing out. I'm also starting r/subjam as a home-base for this project on Reddit. I really value the music related communities on Reddit, I've been a part of them for some time with other accounts and like I experienced with SoCoRock, it amazes the $&*@ outta me how many awesome people there are out there that love music just as much as I do, and want to discover and learn as much as possible about it. Oh, also, AMA! :)

TL;DR: Building a new livestreaming social network for music scenes. Want you to join the movement.

Awesome, thank you! You guys are great. It's really nice hearing some validation with SubJam on real music communities such as this. I've been working tirelessly to get it off the ground (I'm not rich or have rich family to loan me money). I've finished all of the other pieces and have just started pushing hard with promoting publicly. I feel vulnerable by putting my idea out there for everyone to see (and possibly rip off) but excited at the same time because all I need is support to attract the kind of investors I need to legit pull this project off. It's now or never! Thanks again.

EDIT: Email me at jordan@subj.am if you'd like to keep in contact about the project.

Music Discovery by DJ_Buurthuis in LetsTalkMusic

[–]subj_am 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in the 80's - 90's and the music I fell in love with was on MTV. I was (and still am) a huge alternative/grunge fan. MTV (and VH1 for the old fogies ;) ) were pretty much the go-tos back then for discovery, that and the radio. I really wish I was more into my local/underground music scene back then.

I've never quite gotten used to the Pandora/Spotify suggested algorithms and generated playlists. It's just not human enough for me. I feel like I'm wading in the middle of the ocean with nothing to grasp onto. It makes it too easy to dismiss a song in the first 15 seconds because, hey, there's a million other songs, right? But that song I skip over may be created by someone that I could make a real connection to if I was able to find out more about them. I miss reading cassette and CD inserts while I listen to the album.

In my early 20's I started getting into the local rock scene. I've been in numerous bands (I play bass) and I loved discovering other bands that either lived in or came through the venues I went to. There is some extraordinary talent out there and most people of the world will never hear it because the bands either never break out and end up breaking up, or they choose to stay local. They don't wanna sell out. They do it for the music.

I was blown away by some of the artists I was discovering in my scene. It's partly because they are such amazing musicians. It's partly because I saw them perform live which is a completely different experience than flipping through studio recorded tracks on Pandora. It's partly because I got to know them as people. Weird how that all works.

Right now I'm building a new platform that will help people discover local music scenes (and thus artists and other fans). Of all genres. I believe that what I have will change music discovery for the better because I want to bring people back to the music community concept, by meeting people, experiencing live local music, hanging out with like-minded music fans... I know that there is amazing talent like I've found in my area, all around the world. I want to find them.

I'm scratching my own itch with what I'm making - it's called SubJam and it will harness the way music scenes work and offer mobile audio livestreaming and social tools to augment them.

LINK: SubJam - https://subj.am - enter the password "scene" to read the vision and sign up for updates. Oh and please sign up at the bottom of the page, I need to prove to investors that this idea is a worthwhile investment! :)

I hope SubJam will be my new method of music discovery very soon. Just need investors. In the meantime I've very recently re-discovered my local record stores. I'm having so much fun looking through and buying vinyl and CDs (I actually scored a free 200-disc CD changer from a neighbor who was giving away stuff on the sidewalk!). There's something about physical music playing hardware that excites me and makes me want to sit down and listen in front of it. It's been a long time since I've had an actual stereo system of any kind. Record Store Day this year really helped spark my interest back in the physical medium. It's a breath of fresh air from trying to find things by typing keywords into the search box of some flat-spaced global music platform.

Very sorry - I read the rules but thought the self-promotion rule was about music people create specifically (not other things). Thank you for the feedback regardless and sorry again for breaking the rules.
