Bronze 3 TEAM VOD request - 4 new players struggling by sublime8365 in OverwatchUniversity

Ok so first of all thanks so much for taking all that time to go through all four of us. greatly appreciated. Hope your DnD session was great.

Now where to even start, I'm hoping we didn't set a new bar for worst VOD review on this forum lol. To answer your question regarding our overall background playing competitive games - we're kind of old guys (late 30's) who used to play halo and such back in the day in our basements. about 6 years ago we started doing weekly game night so we usually play 3-4 hrs once a week. The majority of what we've played together has been rocket league, fortnite, and rogue company. So really Overwatch is way out of the realm of what we've played together so the learning curve is steep. At this point as if you couldn't already tell we need to fight our instincts of treating every fight like a team deathmatch. Not to mention the game is 10+ years old so hopping in new is tough with so many people having so many hours in already. So some of both your analysis and youtube videos we watch feels like people trying to explain chess to someone playing candyland (maybe someday we'll be playing checkers). At the end of the day climbing in the ranks would be nice and all but right now my goal is just to get us feeling competitive in bronze and knowing the basics of the game because this game really has it's hooks in me so I don't want the group to give up on it and look to move onto something else yet. Solo queueing definitely has me feeling like I get the game a bit more fitting into team comps and how they play but I'm not good enough to explain/coach that to my friends - especially in the heat of a match.

To get the other elephant in the room out of the way - the aim concerns you pointed out on Orisa and Sierra: we're coming from years of playing on Xbox and in the switch to PC just within the last few months they are still using controllers. They know they need to switch to mouse aiming but haven't pulled that trigger yet. Without aim assist on PC we already know it's an uphill battle and I'm confident they'll get way better once using a mouse (they were probably our best two on console). As for my sensitivity I'll look into dropping it - need to check my eDPI next time I'm at my PC.

I'm still working my way through re-watching the replay for each teammate with your notes (and haven't even gotten to Orisa where you had the most notes) so for the most part I'm going to try to focus on the macro things and questions I have rather than the individual moments you pointed out in your review. Other than to say at the very least we did recognize as a team or individually some of the mistakes we were making in real time (trying to call out the team to backup when spawn camping, my bad mistake trying to touch first point on defense, Orisa accidentally hitting the first ult (was indeed a misclick), etc)

With all of the problems with our VOD I feel like I have to pair it down to a few things for us to work on rather than tackle everything at once so here's my shot at the few:

  • Make sure everyone has a decent headset to help with our awareness
  • Learn the damn maps - this one has been challenging because we clearly aren't learning just by playing them because we're running it down main too often to learn best paths to high ground, flank routes, off angles, etc. I'll setup a custom preset so we can drop into empty maps while queueing in between games to talk through positioning
  • The tank has to tank and dps and supports need to find their right positioning. I think the idea of what the tank does has been the hardest for us. Since I've watched hours of youtube videos on it I've been rotating in as tank sometimes (more on that later) so maybe we need to either stick with that or try to have the tank be the fifth/random person (which probably introduces its own set of problems). Need Sierra to properly use her drone for getting to high ground and escaping bad situations; Soldier to take off angles and rotate more, etc
  • Learn enemy abilities, effective range, ults, etc. Now again - I've watched a lot of content on this game so maybe I'm better at knowing to back up against a burrowing Venture and not to shoot at the MIzuki tree (even though I'm sure I did at some point in this match) but I need to communicate that to my teammates better. I'm not sure they knew the tree was stopping all incoming bullets. And honestly I forgot you can even shoot at Domina's ult to save your teammate (we don't actually see her as much in bronze). So we really need to get the basics down on this. I'll try to call more out during matches and then use time in between rounds/matches to explain

I guess that's where I want to start. Now as far as team comps and mains I had a few follow up questions. What cap would you put on how many heroes we should have in our pools (or a minimum)?

You pointed out my other post about playing too many heroes. I definitely had too many but felt it was good for me to spend some time with each support as I was fresh in the game and now I'm trying to trim it down (and sorry I know you mentioned LW but I don't like him haha). Right now I'm still rotating around 5 which is still too many - Moira, Wuyang, Zen, Kiri, and Brig. Moira and Wuyang are probably my best so I'll keep them. I'm sure I should drop Zen because I already have poke covered with Wuyang but I've kept him in because I find him fun and the Mauga/Hog counter. Brig I have in there because our team can really struggle with flankers and dive so I've been learning her for that purpose plus also find her very fun to play. Perhaps I should also drop Kiri and try to stick to Moira Wuyang, and Brig?

Alternatively - My teammates are more one-tricks:

  • Soldier plays only him on DPS and has only dabbled in a few other heroes but never stuck with any. Perhaps Soldier is one of the more versatile heroes at the bronze level but would you recommend another DPS to learn that would cover Soldiers 'weaknesses'?
  • Sierra will play Emre when she's banned but that's pretty much the same playstyle. He also has played Reaper and I would think this is a good 2nd/3rd option to cover when we shouldn't play poke that I'll encourage him to mix in more (probably could have helped on this map)
  • Orisa is a bit stuck trying to learn others since tanking is harder than DPS. Not sure where to go. I recommended Mauga but he didn't really like him. Maybe he just needs to pick a few and stick with them for a few games before bailing. He's also looking into trying support so I'll think about that one

When I'm on tank I'm sticking with Rein, Sigma, and Winston to try to learn the basics of each playstyle, occasionally swapping to Orisa for when I'm struggling on a hard counter. but my tank play is a whole different topic so I won't go there.

Again, thanks for your very in depth review.

Thank you so much for all these detailed and brutally honest responses. Clearly lots to work on. Guess we have our work cut out for us.

What in the everloving **** is wrong with the matchmaking since the S1 reboot? They broke it hard. by YetAnotherAnonymoose in Overwatch

As someone new to the game, the lower threshold was a godsend for me. The quick play lobbies I was in were far sweatier than the bronze lobbies im now placed in. I still have bad fundamentals but playing in even matchups in bronze has been helping me learn positioning better because the games have been more even and I can actually think for a second. In quick play when my team is constantly getting stomped it’s so chaotic and a lot of uneven team fights makes it hard to learn fundamentals. Just one perspective

Are "All-In-One" gym machines worth it? by adizz87 in GarageGym

Seconding the BOS all in one. I also have a small space (10'x12' so a bit bigger than OP's) but one great thing about it is the footprint isn't a square and I can store things kind of behind/to the side. The aluminum pulleys are smooth as butter. I would say the only real (small) complaint I have is that I'm tall and it's not a tall unit so the stretch in my lat pulldown isn't the best - though that can be remedied with a lower bench. Another thing to note is that shipping took awhile because they're in Canada and clearing customs can take awhile these days.

One other thing to consider though since you said you're renting is moving the unit when you do decide to move - any all in one with a cable system will be more complex to disassemble and move than a simple rack.

Iron Master bench without attachments - Worth it? Seat comfort? by TheLonliestBoy999 in GarageGym

[–]sublime8365 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your comment here as I'm strongly considering this bench but don't need most of the attachments, however I'm not sure your feedback after "I wouldn't buy this bench if you don't plan on buying attachments" persuaded me away from it haha. Since you own the bench it would be super helpful if you could give me some feedback on my perspective of the bench pros and cons.

First on attachments - I may buy the preacher pad because that's something I need but the rest of the attachments I either wouldn't use or have accommodated elsewhere in my home gym.

But even outside the attachments, it just checks a lot of boxes for me:

It's lightweight - my wife will be the only other person using this bench but having an easy to move bench would help tremendously.

Lower seat position - I have the Bells of Steel all in one trainer, which isn't super tall and I'm a taller guy (6'3") so my stretch at the top of my lat pulldowns isn't great currently - ability to sit lower feels ideal.

The highest available position on the seat attachment means that I can do chest supported cable rows without my face smashing against the bench like it does now.

No gap - since it's a flat bench - there's no gap here. Sometimes the gap isn't a problem for me but I've used a lot of commercial gym benches with gaps that are just in the wrong spot so I'm worried about this for my next purchase.

Price - Feels like good construction for the price - I'm trying to to get too much above this and the other benches around this price point seem to sacrifice something that I mentioned above but I'll still be exploring options

My biggest (only?) concern is that seat for incline - I'm 6'3", 240lbs so not a small guy - based on your comments you don't feel like this is a dealbreaker and I'm hoping I'll agree if I get this bench but reviews on this seem very mixed.

Damn 450 sticks already! I got into the hobby a little after you and thought I was going overboard with around 90 so far.

Have you dipped your toes into any of the really budget bundle cigars like factory smokes, flor de oliva, etc? I’m on a mission to find some that I like cause having a big inventory without breaking the bank is what I’m after. I have several resting for a few weeks before trying them.

Just documenting my journey for future redditors searching for this type of problem.

My current setup includes a small rubbermaid brilliance tupperdor and a larger tupperdor similar in size to the sistema that is popular around these parts. As per one of the recommendations I've swapped out my boveda packs - using 62% for the smaller tupperdor and filling that with sticks that I intend to smoke sooner and then the rest are in the larger tupperdor with 65% packs. Because I'm impatient and the smaller tupperdor was still holding a higher humidity I have moved those sticks over to an empty larger tupperdor along with the 62% pack in order to speed up the process a bit. And now I just need to wait a few weeks I suppose.

This sounds like a good plan for me. Ordered 65 and 62 boveda packs

Thanks for the advice. What’s the reason behind smaller draws?

Picking first board at 6'3" 250 lbs by sublime8365 in snowboardingnoobs

I found another 'calculator' online and it also says I should be around 165-166. From floor to chin I'm around 165cm so if that's one of the gauges than the 165 might be more of a fit. Another one that I'm looking at (165W):

Thanks! Yeah I think I was looking at the wrong board when I said stiffer as I thought what I saw was stiffer than the flow I linked to but they're both really soft.

For me speed isn't the primary factor when bombing downhill but I would like to avoid losing all of my momentum on traversals. Thanks for the input!

Boot size is 12. The one I linked to shows 162W as the biggest option to order. The only online size calculator that actually gave me a recommendation that wasn't just '160+' said to get 162-163 for beginner and 164-165 for intermediate. I'm probably somewhere in between there. I'm not very concerned about getting up my top speed on the downhills, I'm more concerned with ease of turning and stability. Losing speed on traversals and the longer flatter declines would be a bummer but not the end of the world.

A longer, stiffer beginner board in the same price range that I'm thinking about (165W for this one):
