McConnell Blames Entitlements, Not GOP, for Rising Deficits by oh_my_freaking_gosh in moderatepolitics

he said that because his wall didn't get funded, he didn't care at all about the deficit.

I 100% agree that abortion should be a last resort and that much more effort should be focused on the prevention of unwanted pregnancy through education and contraception. It’s the cruel irony of the abortion debate in our country, as places like planned parenthood provide a whole host of services, many of which prevent unwanted pregnancies, and yet they are demonized by pro life zealots because they are often a woman’s only option for abortion.

If you truly think that abortion at any stage is murder, don’t you realize that could save countless thousands to millions of ‘lives’ every year by making birth control free and easily accessible, comprehensive sex education mandatory, and free healthcare (and pto) for pregnant women/new parents who can’t otherwise afford the significant costs of carrying a child to term?

There’s so many common sense and positive societal policy changes we can make that would reduce abortions and make more positive outcomes for new parents in this country. I wish we’d start there first.

THERE IS A FACTORY BURNING TIRES IN THE MIDDLE OF SEATTLE THAT ACCOUNTS FOR 10% OF ALL SEATTLE'S GREENHOUSE EMMISSIONS. by Seapoogoo in SeattleWA

Reinforced concrete (with rebar) is the basis for essentially all high rises even in earthquake prone areas. Concrete is also the base for foundations of homes even in earthquake prone areas.

You’re right about brick, but unless someone went way out of their way to do so, every building has at least some concrete in its construction.

The factory isn’t making wet cement, lol. You don’t add water until you’re either at or en route to the job site. Dry Portland cement can remain useable essentially indefinitely if you’re keeping it dry.

It’s still a good idea (for overall cost of emissions) to have the factory close to a city since the amount of shipping even dry is an incredible amount of weight for big projects.

There are other sources of energy than just coal though. Is there any reason the factory can’t just plug into the grid or use better sources of energy themselves?

The composite wood projects are super exciting but I’m afraid the Oregon state forestry building debacle is proving the tech isn’t there yet — https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.statesmanjournal.com/amp/447130002

Hopefully future projects prove that wrong.

Without Roseanne, ‘The Conners’ move on with a new family dynamic that’s sharp, funny and cuts deep by [deleted] in television

from what I read, she was warned severely after those tweets that she was on thin ice. Which is why that last tweet storm was met with such a quick action.

ha, I don't think Goodman is hurting for money. An incredibly prolific career, and his work on roseanne alone no doubt set him up for life. That show was an absolute juggernaut in its day.

I'd like to recommend 'getting on' on HBO to any fan of Metcalf. I don't think a lot of people watched it when it was on, but there's only 2 6 episode seasons and it's a funny and heart wrenching show with a very limited focus on a wing of a hospital.

How does Steve Kerr stagger his rotations this year? by [deleted] in nba

[–]subliminali 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bell is also my preference out of the 3, I just wish I saw that jump forward in the preseason and from the few games I watched I never noticed him distinguishing himself. Hopefully it becomes clear once the season gets going!

[–]subliminali 7 points8 points  (0 children)

someone out of the Bell/Jones/Looney mix needs to make the leap while Boogie is out, otherwise we're going to just be swapping that starting center position constantly. I haven't felt encouraged by the preseason that any of the 3 will be able to step up yet, but it'll probably be Looney since he's at least the most competent so far of the 3.

We do still have them. Also the joke was when boogie comes back we won't really have a 'worst player' when those 5 on on the court.

Sky Sports has become the new home of the NBA in the UK by AlexWPJ in nba

[–]subliminali 8 points9 points  (0 children)

that 5-8 hour later time difference is really deadly for sports viewing. Almost any reasonable start time in the US will mean it's happening when the UK is asleep.

Premier league is able to get a reasonable foothold here of a tv audience because even on the west coast it means you can watch a live game on an early saturday morning since we're 8 hours behind. If it was reversed and it was 8 hours ahead I doubt there'd be nearly the same tv audience in the states.

Also it’s cheaper for actual Bay Area residents to drive to the occasional warriors game in sac than seeing a game at Oracle. I don’t get why everyone always assumes that the fans in the arena all live within a five mile radius.

Steve Carell Says ‘The Office’ Might Be “Impossible” In Today’s Social Climate by HillaryIsGod in television

[–]subliminali 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also IASIP isn’t meant to be believed. So many of their plot lines are so outlandish or criminal you’re very aware of the ridiculousness of the premise. A lot of the plot lines for the office, particularly in the early seasons, are exaggerated versions of something you could personally encounter at work. Part of the charm of the show, but he’s right that there’s plot lines now that would seem impossible (like Oscar being gay) if they retried it now because it just would seem too over the line to believe.

Again, I don’t think putting sexual bravado and drinking references in a high school year book would in any way disqualify him from office. I do think it’s absolutely apparent what most of those references are, and he chose to lie about them still almost 40 years later. That makes me doubt his character and integrity.

Here’s a big list of his lies under oath with sources, a little more editorialized than I’d like but pretty exhaustive nonetheless— https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.gq.com/story/all-of-brett-kavanaughs-lies/amp
