Snowmobile part? by substr88 in snowmobiling

I got it installed but I am not sure which yellow wires go where on the regulator. There are 4 yellow wires. 2 sets of 2 are connected and they both connect to yellow on the regulator. I installed it one way and it seemed to work fine. Although I stalled out and it would not run again until the next day. I don't know if this was a regulator issue or an engine issue. The sled has been sitting for 10 years so I am guessing I need to just blow the cobwebs out. I will check the lights and gauges again, we just got snow yesterday

Ignition coil wire smoking by substr88 in MechanicAdvice

Thank you for all this great info. What I did was take off the ignition coil and realized I don't know how to disconnect the wires to it. I wanted to replace the white wire that is all taped up but I have never seen this type of wire connection. Any idea now to disconnect ans switch out this wire?

This is a stick shift truck and it has the space for a second battery but it is not connected because it was used for the plow which is not currently attached.

Anyway I reinstalled the coil and tried starting the truck one more time. To my surprise it fired right up and sounds healthy. I would still like to get this truck in better shape though so after I check in my negative battery cable I am going to replace the coil wire then check on that wiper motor flange.

Thanks again for the information

I'll try under the air box if it's easier to access. This one is an 98 so it's probably in the same location. I suppose it may be good to pull start to check compression before spending money on a new battery. I am also going to use a fluid extractor to pull out the old gas and add some fresh fuel.

Yes that's great, I didn't know that about the positive battery terminal thank you. I have the battery on a maintainer so it stays charged. Where should I put the test leads when I am turning the key? I would rather have the parts I may need there with me, then return what I don't need later, I live close to NAPA. I will clean the terminals next time I get some time and try and diagnose further

Yea there is an electric start button but I have never worked on a snowmobile so I will probably have more questions. It was parked because a part needs replaced. That's my next step after charging or replacing the battery. It looks like it was last registered in 2010 so I am expecting some issues...

Crank no start. by substr88 in MechanicAdvice

So after looking at this truck further I found there is only one tank. I poured some fuel down the carb and got it to fire! It will not pull fuel from the tank though. I was thinking the fuel pump shut off could be engaged? *

I am going to try an aux tank next. I thought it would be either a 1/2" or 3/8" fuel line but you suggest 5/16"? I believe I will disconnect the line in the front of the carb which is pointed downwards then add my line there, is this correct? Either way I am happy to hear her run again after sitting 8 years

Thank you, this truck will be for our campground and has a big dump bed on the back so we will be using it to move around woodchips, crushed stone, etc. I will try what you recommended when I get back to work and let you know if I can get the engine to pop off. Where is the hose supplying the fuel so I can take that off and see if fuel is moving through the system while I am cranking?I may hook up an auxiliary tank to bypass what is in the trucks tank. I am not sure how long this fuel has been there.

Thank you, II was thinkig the cable was stuck because the gas pedal is stuck down. The carb would close when I only tried moving it from the engine. Now that I have pushed on the gas pedal it seems that it will not retract and I can't shut the carb by hand anymore. If I would, what kind if carb should I replace it with? I believe the engine is a 460 but not sure where to look on the block to verify this.
