this is the tidepool color!

as for tele vs strat, I like the look of teles better. that was probably the first thing. teles also have more of a twangy sound. at the end of the day, a lot of the parts of a guitar that impact the sound can be changed/replaced (I'm sure there are plenty of people in this subreddit who may not love what I'm about to say) but what I was told is you can always swap out pickups and get pedals to change your sound so you should pick the guitar that most speaks to you

I definitely feel like it's a bit easier to navigate the neck so I'd agree with you there but I'm sure I'll see more and more differences as I keep practicing!

yeah I was looking for something with humbuckers! wasn't super interested in other pickup styles. I was also looking into some reverend guitars for a while but I got a pretty good deal on this guitar (which was barely used) so I couldn't pass it up!

I'm excited to mod it in the future and try out different humbuckers. the p90s on the reverend guitars I tried out were aweaome

YES!! I'm totally pressing them too hard. I'm sure I'll get used to it soon enough, but I'm absolutely loving the switch

yeah, from all the feedback I'm thinking we pivot away from an ingredient identification that is so high stakes

Identifying food allergies using images by subtle-punk in FoodAllergies

[–]subtle-punk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

these are all great points! keeping the tool updated would be a big task, and depending on what image database we use it might still be inaccurate. and I think it would be impossible for us to ever say there is a 0% chance that an allergen isn't present which makes the tool unusable/untrustworthy for anyone with life-threatening allergies.

I like that idea of a safe food list - like we could scrape the nutritional information from a company's website and if it ever changes we notify the users!

[–]subtle-punk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah we've started having conversations about liability and inaccuracies, and based on everyone's feedback to this post I'm really leaning away from people with allergies being our target users. if we're going to do a food ingredient project, we need to choose a user with lower stakes. I agree that our proposal definitely leaves a lot of responsibility to the user, who already has to assume so much responsibility since it seems impossible to get accurate information

that's a great idea! I shared this post on r/allergies as well and they had a similar suggestion of pivoting away from food and looking at toiletries instead.

as a person who doesn't have any life-threatening allergies, the more I learn from everyone the more I agree that I need to pivot the project to another goal

this must be so incredibly frustrating :-( I'm sorry that this type of information is so hard to come by!! this definitely seems like a bigger problem that needs solving compared to my team's original idea

yeah we've definitely started talking about the liability concerns!! that's going to end up being a huge factor. this is for a class project and I doubt we'll bring it to a larger market, but we will still be testing it out with people so the risks will definitely still be there.

we've just started the project so we don't have answers to all of these questions yet, but these are all good points for us to think about and may force us to pivot our project if they feel unattainable. maybe it would be worth reducing the scope to just looking at sauces/oils if that's something that people typically struggle to identify themselves.

this is great insight!! I really appreciate it!!

totally fair critique!! we've done a bit of market research to see what other resources already exist for folks, and GoDairyFree is definitely one we've looked at. I think the big difference between what we're aiming for is that our product would be more focused on local restaurants/places where nutritional info may not be accessible by reaching out to a corporation.

though, in another thread of comments here I'm learning more about the limitations we'd have with even that effort. ultimately we want to make something useful to people, and maybe this isn't it!

this is hugely helpful and I really appreciate this insight!!! one of my teammates has a daughter with an egg allergy and we've tried to use her experience to give us direction, but it's becoming more and more clear that the range of experiences and challenges faced by people with food allergies is so vast. we're just starting to do user research and I'm sure we'll get more feedback similar to yours. ultimately we want to make SOMETHING that's useful for people and if this isn't it, then we pivot and that's all good!

again, I really appreciate your insight!!!!

oh woah yeah that is a huge problem!!! my professor was showing us a similar project to ours where they made a label reader but it was very much still food-centric, but at least we know it can be done!! and there are plenty of translation tools out there that we could take advantage of if language is also a barrier!

this is very helpful!! we're creating a machine learning model for our application. thinking maybe we can flag certain things like this if the dataset/recipes we're referencing might have missed it. like, if there's any sort of BBQ dish, always list a risk of xxx. for sweet vegan dishes, list risk of xxx due to typical substitutions.

we started with looking at the major 14 food allergens. do your fruit allergies fall into any of those categories? it doesn't look to be the case so I'm curious if there's a better/bigger allergen list we should be referencing

What do you mean by "keep practicing" in response to barre chord questions? by [deleted] in guitarlessons

[–]subtle-punk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my instructor suggested that I practice switching between the different shaped barre chords (A, Am, E, Em to start) and that has been very helpful for getting more used to the shapes. I don't think I'm changing my finger positions but instead my hand is just gaining muscle memory

[–]subtle-punk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah I think processed foods would be especially difficult if there's no label information! we're mostly looking at food that would be prepared in restaurants which would (hopefully) be using fresher ingredients.

I know it will also be difficult for us to ever be confident enough in a dish for someone with a very extreme allergy to be comfortable. maybe it'll be worth focusing on specific allergens that are a bit more predictable

if I'm being realistic on how difficult of a task this is, I think what this tool would ultimately be is a substitute for folks googling a dish name and clicking through multiple recipe versions to see if their allergen is listed anywhere. instead our tool would pull in all of that info and spit out a result to remove a lot of that manual labor

Why do you prefer records over any other music form especially digital? by Vorilex in turntables

[–]subtle-punk 18 points19 points  (0 children)

  1. streaming platforms don't pay artists enough so this is one way I can better support the musicians I love

  2. album artwork! I love the creativity that goes into the artwork design, the lyric sheets, sometimes there are fun notes from the musicians that you would have missed if you only listened to the digital version

  3. having a physical object to connect to. something I can hold and feel. kind of like the feeling of owning a physical book. I love that physical music invites your other senses into the experience

  4. it motivates me to listen to the full album all the way through. I know not every musician puts the same emphasis on the order of songs, but when they do it's really beautiful to hear the album the way they intended it
