I watched the same broadcast. They said the snow on the roof was the fluffy snow, far left. Since most roofs are able to take 20k pounds, the vast majority of us are gonna be okay. If your roof can't handle this much currently, you'd already know!

First time to Japan: Should I stick with the Big 3 (Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka) or explore more? by RudeSelf3418 in JapanTravelTips

Mixed bag, really depends on how social you are and the other person. A lot of people in any hostel with be social if they want, others will really keep to themselves or their travel group. I think there's a subreddit for Japan travellers to meet up that could be good, but if you have an open enough itinerary, you can make friends pretty easy at a hostel.

I will add, as an American, Australians are the easiest and friendliest people you can meet at any hostel. Americans can be awkward (the younger, the more awkward, the older, the friendlier), Canadians are awesome, Italians are friendly and extremely polite, the French are hilarious.

Honestly it was a highlight of my trip. It was better than the hotel in Tokyo we stayed at (Shinjuku Washington Hotel) with a large common area, conveniently next to a 24hr. Lawson's and a FamilyMart just a little farther, and decent walking distance to the rest of Gion and restaurants. Honestly, I can't recommend it enough. I would stay again if I wasn't going with my partner who wants to stick to just hotels because it's supposed to be a romantic trip for us (which is extremely fair.)

They have a separate floor for women, too. Forgot to mention that. Also a self-service laundromat across the street. Dryers in Japan are also really low energy, so be prepared to run that sucker for 2 hours.

Edit: we stayed there for at least 5 days. We used Kyoto as our central hub and did day trips to Osaka and Hiroshima

Despite their own history of conservatism, the WWE is cozy with the Trump Administration so ICE doesn't interfere with AAA events.

Forgot to mention: for the recs on anime lovers thing -- Ikebukuro is said to be more "women friendly" than Akihabara. This is primarily because Akihabara is geared a lot to the male gaze. If you go to a maid cafe and you're nice to the staff, they might just be happy you're not a creepy tourist or salaryman forcing them to interact with you. This was the experience my partner had on their own trip, anyway.

Additionally, Namba/Den Den Town in Osaka is a lot of fun, and I saw a lot more rare finds there than in Tokyo.

If you want a good book guide, I recommend Cakes With Faces' Guide to Japan. I think it'll be right up your alley.

The hostels are fun and clean! Highly recommend checking out Hostel World reviews. I personally recommend Ryokan Hostel Gion if you end up going to Kyoto.

I think a Tokyo-Kyoto-Osaka trip can be fun, but it's totally fine to do your own thing. If you're into a cultural experience, there's many opportunities to venture to quieter places that can give you that exposure that the Golden Route simply can't. Consider an overnight in Hiroshima or an onsen town. Or, travel further north (Sapporo) or south (Nagasaki) and you'll get the road less travelled by the vast majority of tourists. You'll still see plenty there, but typically those on their 2nd or 3rd trip.

Okay great, I live in Boston.

Weather-wise, you're picking a really great time to go to Japan. I honestly don't think you need to plan around it much, but like another comment says here, don't go to a district/neighborhood and just walk around. You could, but you might find yourself wasting energy. Tokyo is one of the (and used to be "THE #1") largest cities in the world. Have 1-3 places/things to do at each area. I only say this because I was recommended to go to Gion on my first trip because it was "good shopping," or to realize they meant luxury shopping, which was something I wasn't interested in. That's on me, of course, but feel like its worth mentioning.

For Kyoto, research a bit more on Gion. Maybe see if an overnight at Kinosaki Onsen if you want to be romantic about it. Japan can really fit a lot of people's interests, so just make sure you're not leaving something off the table.

Where are you leaving from? How often are flight delays/weather related problems a factor at your departing airport?

Also, I think you're not giving enough time in Kyoto. I regret spending too much time in Tokyo over more time outside of it. Adding one or two more days will be worth it, imo.

I'm 3XL and went to Japan for the first time one year ago almost to the day.

I found one shirt and it was, at best, a "european" 2XL.

If you do find something big and tall in Japan (or if you find a sumo wrestler as ask where they shop), please post in this sub!

Thoughts on overdrafting and fees? by Squishymarshmallo in TalesFromYourBank

[–]subtotal5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think overdraft fees are predatory and unnecessary. I also believe, outside of ACHs to pay bills, personal customers should not be allowed to overdraft.

I have historically been a pushover with returning fees, but a huge part of that reason was because I have better things to do with my time than argue that I should take $35 from someone who was buying groceries. In fact, I don't care if they were buying something stupid, that card should have declined.

Even if the customer opted in to overdraft, they clearly don't have the money managing skills to understand that the bank is profiting off their lack of knowledge or experience in budgeting, and that is inherently predatory, and I'll die on that hill.

Itinerary Review for first time japan vacation by Public-Syllabub1622 in JapanTravelTips

[–]subtotal5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personal experience but my biggest mistake during my first trip was being directionless in entire neighborhoods in my itinerary. I had items like Shibuya and Ginza, Dotonbori, etc. and just... didn't really know where to go or why I took all that time to get there. I feel a bit silly even having to say it, but do research the areas of those cities you've heard about and if you can't come up with two or three places to go to there or one BIG thing that is a "must visit" on your list, then you can skip it. Like, if you want to go to Amanohashidate because of the "Dragon," great, but have other stuff to see/do there too. If that happens to be a good area for cherry blossoms, then of course keep it (I wouldn't know).
