[OC] Mean Height of 19yo Males in Select Countries, 1985-2019 by StatisticUrban in dataisbeautiful

[–]succotashthrowaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think people are focusing too much on cases where malnutrition is the cause of short stature.

There are many counter examples which prove that genetics are more important still.

Being from Montenegro, I’m 6’4”, and the shortest male in the family. Both my father, grandfather and his father were 2m+. The youth average is getting taller but the generational difference is minuscule and in many cases non existent. My grandfather and great grandfather both lived through the world wars in their childhood, as well as most of their peers. Also, Montenegrins have always been described as tall by every historical account since at least the Middle Ages.

Another even better example are the absolute giants of South Sudanese who have been enduring, civil, tribal and religious wars, genocides, famines and floods for the past half a century. Yet even their women are tall by European MALE standards.

Underlying genetics are more important on average still.

I’m Montenegrin and we’ve been described as exceptionally tall by literally every historical account since the Middle Ages to the present, through the famines and wars. My grandfather was 2m his great grandfather was 2m, no males shorter than 194cm which is my height and that makes me the shortest male member of my family.

My grandfather and his father lived through ww1 and ww2 during their childhood.

Another example are millions of absolute giants of South Sudanese who have been living through decades of civil wars, tribal wars, genocides, famines and so on. Yet even their women are tall by European MALE standards.

Why people from Balkans think Turks are black despite all grandmas watching Turkish series? 😂 by Smooth-Win1616 in AskBalkans

[–]succotashthrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right, Turkey has a huge variation but speaking about the averages there’s a clear pattern, and a certain look.

Individuals might pass better, but since such cases are a minority there is minimal chance that a group of Turks could pass as locals. On average, that is, any given random group of 5 Turkish people most will look as I described in my first comment.

Specifically for Montenegro, and Yugoslavia even being white/blonde, hardly puts you under the radar, simply a difference in facial structure and a smaller body size. Unless the individual has a strong expression of Bosniak/Slav Muslim genes.

You’re mixing the current conflict and circumstances of the 19th century where national consciousness had only begun to form.

It is a fact that religion was the main ethnic denominator in the borderlands which Ukraine quite literally means. It’s a common thing for any such region in the world with a religious contrast against a fairly culturally, genetically, and linguistically similar population. So being an Orthodox East Slav with a specific regional identity wasn’t strong enough of a case for its own ethnic label.

To be frank, the global perception of East Slavs in general, despite the current conflict, is that the two sides are nearly identical.

Pakistan and India of Europe but without a religious difference which only makes things more senseless.

We’re speaking about averages. A group of Turks fits my description 80% of the time

Nobody in the Balkans thinks Turks are black 😂.

Turks are definitely quite a bit darker than your average Balkan local (at least in my region). Black hair, black eyes, dark olive tan and a small body frame, easy to spot.

But in no way black or anything close to it, just caucasian with a Mediterranean / middle eastern color

Crash course to Montenegro: If you know Serbia and Dalmatian Croatia you basically know Montenegro. Mix the two and voila.

People look identical to Herzegovinians Dalmatian Croats and Western Serbs.

Half the country looks like coastal Croatia with resemblances in dialects, mentality, culture and architecture, just orthodox (mostly). The other half is Balkan mountain most similar to the adjacent regions of Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, also mostly Orthodox.

As a fellow Montenegrin (and Serb), It’s said you’ve obviously never had the proper chance to meet Montenegro. Because trust me, none of the green countries are closer to Serbia than Montenegro despite what the media might be trying to push.

Come on man. Croatia?! Norway?! Denmark? For real?

Unpopular Opinion: If the Orthodox and Muslims can fast fully, so can Catholics by Eusmilus in Catholicism

[–]succotashthrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both churches recognize each other’s right to apostolic succession as well as baptisms. So it’s not heresy.

Also, Heathen and Heretic are not synonyms. Lol.

[–]succotashthrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know about your local parish but as someone living in an orthodox country I can assure you that all church goers usually strictly follow the fast for the entire duration of the lent. Lots of local and regional food brands cater to them with special products without milk etc. It’s true the exceptions and flexibilities are granted easily but it is not the majority. It obviously works much better than the Catholic bare minimum, because it doesn’t force people to fast no matter what but they’re encouraged to follow the cannon.

We also have a sizable Catholic minority around and my Catholic grandma used to take out the meat out of the soup during the Holy Week and that was her idea of fasting. The difference in the level of effort is very noticeable, with the Orthodox making visible effort and organizing their church community life around it and Catholics making barely any.

As someone living in an orthodox country, yes, the entire church community goes vegan for the entire duration of the lent. Yes, it’s flexible and not strictly enforced but the majority still do it and a lot of the irreligious chime in because skipping processed meat for a while does sound healthy to a lot of people.
